Bill Wyman as a Stones member - ignored nowadays
Posted by: TooTough ()
Date: November 6, 2007 09:06

OK, he´s gone since 1993, and it´s ok if younger fans don´t
know him or his musical importance for the Stones´sound.

But since Rarities there seems to be an official will to
ignore him. Photoshopping him off a CD where 2/3 of the songs
got his basslines is the worst decision the Stones made in the
last years. Even on bootlegs/outtakes CDs from the pre
1993 era (where Bill was still playing) sometimes even have the
4piece pictures, with BW edited out. On "All Mixed Up", for example,
with songs around 1980, there is no Bill Wyman on.

I think he deserves credit on things he was involved in. His basslines
are truly a backbone of the Stones sound until 1993.

smile: what does the Stones' "official will" have to do with what someone put on a bootleg cover?!
i would agree with you, but that part is silly.
has anyone asked Bill what his wishes were about the Rarities cover?
it was certainly weird to edit that photo, and i wonder what the story was.

I think it's likely that Bill himself has warned the Stones not to use his likeness for commercial purposes, and that anyway specific arrangements must have been executed on the matter.

They have hundreds of photos, I think that they should have never done that, it reminds me of a Kundera book, seems so "nomenclature" like Soviet sh**t.

Just terrible decision.

>> I think it's likely that Bill himself has warned the Stones not to use his likeness for commercial purposes <<

i think that's likely too, which is why i asked if anyone's asked Bill about it.
still, that doesn't explain why they decided to edit that photo,
instead of using one that included just the current four to begin with.
as i've noted, i reckon there's a story behind that weird decision.

I just can't see what a few bootleg releases mean in this connection...??

Apart from that - yes Bill deserves more credit and funds - even more so than Taylor

Somewhere in the graphic design department of Stones, Inc., there is a drawer containing an envelope holding the Bill Wyman pixels that were extracted from the photo on the cover of the Rarities collection.

Liberate the Bill Wyman pixels!

As long as I can hear him, I'm not worried about seeing him.

He's gone..was a rolling stone..(i love him) BUT he quit..

sadly he is treated like they treat brian jones and mick taylor..

i do think bill didnot want his picture used in any new albums without payment from the stones...
i still hope that someday Bill would return as a member...but at his age it seems very unlikely.. doesn't need too!

With DJ on bass how can you miss Bill? Jones kicks ass.

Why would Bill not recieve royalties from the "Rarities" album? I'm pretty sure that he does, just like Mick Taylor was compensated for his contribution to some of the tracks on "Tattoo You" (I think he threatened legal action, but as far as I know, the matter WAS resolved)

I think, again, that this is a case of us not knowing enough ;-)

i'm sure he does get all his rightful performer royalties from Rarities.
i think hot stuff meant that maybe he required payment for using his photo on the cover?
i have no idea - i guess i think it's more likely that he Just Said No - but someone should ask him :E

not quite.

he's not a rolling stone, never will be a rolling stone;
dosen't play like a rolling stone, or even in their style...
does not even do a good job at half-way replicating the magic in the position he was placed in. he's not a boogie guy, he's not a rock guy; he's not a rock and roll guy; will never be...dosen't play like one, dosen't sound like one...
he's a rock around their neck and the vague in the vegas parts of their sound...
...he rolls around on the root and takes his checks...far away from any of the music that inspired him or that he emulated when becoming the jazz virtusoso that many claim...so he's not true to his own music. he's not at all a rocker, and this thread is about the GREAT bill wyman; who's indelible stamp is on almost every song that jones has ever played with the band.
ridiculous choice. kickass bass player? are you kidding?
i guess you're not. he's all you got i suppose.
unless you listen to the music that made them famous and worthwhile and so transcendent, on your radio or stereo or ipodeo or whatever-eee-ohhh...
imo.
oddly, i don't regret bill leaving the band; i regret the loss of a reasonable replacement...
bill earned his stripes with thirty plus years with the band and was a HUGE part of everything they were when they took off in clubs, and everything they did on tv and concert for the first thirty years...if for whatever reasons he wanted out, good for him.
why not just start where darryl came in, and ignore the rest of the previous history...
you will have a stones collection but it will not be the world's greatest rock and roll band, or a band that ever was...nor witll it be a collection of consequence aesthetically or culturally.

Interesting to me that the Beatles and Stones had such fine albeit unconventional bass players. Wyman particularly seemed to play whatever the song called for. His taste, judgment, instincts, sense, versatility whatever you want to call it were so impeccable that I took him for granted for many years. I do not know how other bass players rate him, but for this band he was spot on.

no that would be john entwhistle, The Ox, or to you pino palladino i guess.
difference between pino and darryl tho is talent; pino has some.

you are purty confused today, eh? and to think we've been thru every tour since the 1792 one together and it comes down to this between us...a shame schillid.
nice shirt tho!!

He seems to vanish from the Stones´history in the public
memory. That´s speeded up if even his former group erases
him from things like "Rarities". So some younger fans, some
webpages and some bootleggers seem to also forget him.

But "All Mixed Up" was released over 10 years ago...I think it was in 1996 - long before the RS camp started to ignore him.
There are countless of bootlegs without Charlie, Wood or Wyman on the artwork.

DJ can play circles around Bill. His phrasing is superb not BW's. Bill was hit or miss. Most of the time miss. Live once one mistake after another. Listen to Ya Yas. he can't get through a verse without a bum note. Bill was a lucky man. In the right place right time. DJ has talent and an ear for music something BW nevrer had.

My Stones must be joking, and oldkr, ignore Bill Wyman? Sorry for you, but I not only enjoy music but also LISTEN. Bill may have been taken out of the Rarities photo but unless I missed something, the last time I listened his bass playing is still on my Stones collection. Nobody has managed to erase him! Hard for me to ignore!

Really, Bill was there to play bass on tour. His musical contribution was pretty limited otherwise.

If someone else had had the job instead of Bill from the start, we'd never have known the difference; the Stones would still have been the successful band we know and love. That said, I still like the old grump and wish he hadn't quit so soon.

Bill's bass defines the original distinctive Stones sound.

My Stones, you are a nitwit.
