I was just listening to the "very" best of mick jagger. And I was very surprised about the version of memo from turner.

It is very different from the Metamorphosis version I know. Did they remix it for this cd or were there always two versions?

3 versions that I know of. Two that The Stones did and one that Jagger did with Cooder.

The version on the Very Best of should be the Cooder version, which would be the one from the Performance sdtrk, which is IMO the best version of the song.

It is the best, and I never thought I would say that,but the Stones version sucks.

come on, the Metamorphosis is much better, it has the feel of stray cat blues/monkey man. It has much more rock to it then the version on the very best.

The best version IMO is the one on the Black Box bootleg.(Also with Ry Cooder?!)

I have always felt that the movie version was better than the Metamorphosis version. This song is one of my favourite Jagger/Richards songs, the lyrics are great and the scene in the movie brings it all home.
I highly recommend the performance soundtrack is it pretty good.

The Black Box version is slower and it's midway between the film version and Metamorphosis. Awsome.It's on the Black Box II.CD from 1968?

Metamorphosis version is almost like an early punk song. The others are more sophisticated.

Now can anybody help me? I have an old vinyl bootleg called "Lord Have Mercy".It has a 3:46" version that is neither the "Performance" nor the "Metamorphosis" version; is this the same as the Black Box version, or is this yet another version???

Micks Best Of is different from The London Years version, but only as the drums intro is shortened a bit, so that explains the different running time - London Years: 4.06 - Best Of: 4.03 - so its not exactly a different version, its more a different edit!

The "extended intro" version you mention is not genuine, its fake done by the bootlegger to pretend selling something "new", but in fact its homemade! the bootleg it comes from (cant remember name) also has fake "different versions" of other tracks like Happy and Drift Away if I remember it right.

CORRECTION: Micks Best Of and The London Years
versions are EXACTLY THE SAME (silence AFTER the track is a bit longer on London Years, thats why it clocks in at 4.06!!!). so drum intro is not shortened, in fact I confused this with the as yet unreleased outtake version which indeed has a longer drum intro.

Maybe based on the film version... but with Ronnie's slide style and Keith's chopped chords amd Monkey Man type riffs it could really smoke.

One read that "Don't Call Me Up" was written by Mick for the Stones, but he decided to use it for GITDW album?? Can someone confirm?

Interesting question: who, besides Mick and Ry Cooder are playing on the Performance version (also on London Years and Best Of Mick Jagger) of Memo from Turner?

According to Nico Zentgraf an early version with Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi (on drums) was recorded in september 1968.
Later (around november 1968) Al Kooper supposedly joined in on guitar for the Metamorphosis version.
No one knows for sure if Keith plays on any version at all (some suggest he might even hate the song, because Mick and Anita were "getting along nicely" during the filming of Performance).
