Do you think Charlie knows the lyrics?

I wonder. His playing can lead one to believe he does but I truly wonder...

Your thoughts...

I think some songs they all know the lyrics to. Maybe half the current setlist, songs like JJF,SFTD,HTW,BS,GS,MR,YCAGWYW,Satisfaction,Angie,MY,TD.

When they played CYHMK, Sway, Heart of Stone, etc...my guess is they listen to the song just to reacquaint themselves with the tune and the lyrics.

As Keith once said "I may have written it but it doesn't mean I know it".

No, he can't ever remember the lyrics to their songs...his one flaw.

Once the band realized that, they swapped positions, Mick to lead singer and Charlie to drums.

The rest is history...

I saw a documentary on the Who recently, and there were performance scenes that showed an unmiked Keith Moon singing along (or at least mouthing the words to the songs while Daltrey sang).

If I ever saw Charlie do that on stage, I would say that Charlie had been kidnapped and replaced by a counterfeit Charlie who didn't know Watts' mannerisms very well.

Seems I recall a few of the songs the Stones performed for Don Kirshner's Rock Concert program showing Charlie shaking his head and looking vaguely embarrassed by Mick's antics. Maybe it was It's Only Rock 'n' Roll; maybe it was Angie.

I would really doubt he knows them. words don't seem to be his thing.

I think He Might because... and maybe this applys to their playingm back in the day... I dont know how true it is today but Ive read in interviews about the Interplay of the band that Charlies drumming is influnced by Micks Singing. Like he'll play in response to micks singing or phrasing.

Its funny to hear stories like this about Keith Moon. I have read where he would start singing along with the band and throw Townshend Daltry and Entwistle off, so the sound engineer would shut off Moons mike. I have also read (not sure if its true or just a joke) that he would sing along to the quiet part of Behind Blue Eyes so thats why they would kick him off stage during that segment and then bring him back for the upbeat part.

yeh absolutely; i don't know if he has particular lyrics committed to memory, but he's eagle eyed on keith and mick with incredible focus...and mick listens as hard as charlie watches mick...all those body movements coming right off the drum hits like the bluesy hot stripper band they really are at heart, in many ways. charlie is the master at this...

well,Keith Moon issued a solo record..."Two sides of the Moon" i think it was the title and he sang there

The use of the word 'sang' is a bit debatable when it comes to that record!

'Bell Boy' from Quadrophenia features Keith's vocal genius. He would also sing it when they played it live.

In 'The Kids are alright' you cans ee him in the studio singing back up on 'Who are You' and (if I remember right) he also does a vocal on 'Barbara Ann'

Charlie is actually credited as a backing vocalist on 'Always suffering' but when asked about it in an AOL fans interview a few months later he denied any knowledge of it!

Keith Moon could actually sign to a point.

Look for the Quick One album

he was the composer AND sang on 'I need you'

and it's really rather good!

Also Cobs Web and Strange is a classic moon composition. No signing but absolutely bonkers!!

signing as in for the hearing-impaired? that must be tricky while drumming

ablett, i am not criticizing Keith Moon - au contraire, i am impressed!
signing while drumming is a brilliant concept but an audio-only recording would not really do it justice -
isn't there a dvd??

... okay okay: typos as a source of humour are not going over big in ablettland today.
singing while drumming is also very impressive - thanks & praises Keith Moon, and love & light

Barbara Ann with Keith Moon, a real gem!

Hey, I like the idea of Ablettland!

All's good here, no lack in sence of humour just yet.....

There isn't any footage of Moon doing I need you as its an album track.

smile: can i pour you some coffee then, ablett my dear?
hold your cup out - i'll pour it in this little slot on my computer here - that's what it's for, right? :E

meanwhile re signing: [en.wikipedia.org] ...
LoFL - better yet, never mind! :E

i believe Charlie knows a lot of the lyrics, but whether he *knows* he knows them is another question.

Someone wrote that "words don't seem to be Charlie's thing"... I have quite another impression. I saw a fabulous interview with him once, on Australian TV. The man's very well spoken. He's an intellectual guy, but very shy.
For some sweet Charlie-related stuff, go to: [www.halsdonarabians.com]
and click "about".
There's a new side of Charlie. And an absolutely beautifull web site.
