Great song. From a great album. What a time in NYC in 1978. It was the Stones home town and Shattered was all over the place. Yeah it sounds maybe a little dated but like a lot of 30 year old songs sound a touch dated.

along the same lines, what's up with Beat of Burden. I don't think they did anything like it before or after. Very unique pop song for the Stones. I like it, I don't like it. Good Ronnie solo live, sometimes way too long. It is fun to play though with a very identifieable riff.

I love how the bass lines and guitar riffs just fit so seamlessly together in this song.

On the album..its a rather relaxt song...but when you here the Some Girls tour versions..its wild desperate hard rocking punk...the 81/82 versions were ok...after that the song lost his power...but not all is lost..if they start with it or as the second song...it can be done..the way it have to be done..what a cool song.

Yep.

I know exactly what you're talking about...the extra note done live robs it of it's minimalist power. Studio version is MUCH better.

As much as I love it, I don't think it's a perfect song. It almost falls apart at the break...the middle part with the solo just doesn't cut it.

Overall, it was a killer track. At the time it made an impact.

That summer Elvis Costello did a version in a club (with Richard Hell I think). If you know him at all, that speaks volumes to the quality of the song.

I Like the phase shifting on the guitar on SG.

Perfect on SG and killer live too.

Lots of great bands have a unique sound that nobody can duplicate. You instantly know Led Zeppelin or The Who or The Clash because nobody else sounds like them.

But consider two of the greatest Rolling Stones songs: Gimme Shelter and Shattered. Besides being unbelievably mind blowing and kick ass, nothing else in the annals of rock and roll sound like them. They each stand apart as completely unique, not just within the Stones discography but in all of rock.

They are perfect in their original form and endlessly interesting live. That really is some kind of achievement.

I was fortunate enough to get shidobeed at the SF show in 05. It was in the number 2 spot, really cool.

Great description! Perfect! I agree...two totally unique songs, and Shattered has such a powerful groove with a incredibly dark undertone, the backing vocals are brilliant! It sounds like a troop of walking dead giving the song such apocolyptic undertones. And the imagery is so vivid....and then the guitar work is unlike any other stones' song...BLOODY FANTASTIC...and I prefer the studio over the live versions I have heard.

I really love this aggressive song. Both studio and live 1978-82. And I love the difference between studio and live, hey, otherwise they could have played a tape on stage.

The music belongs to the Some Girls era. But the lyrics could have done for Beggars Banquet, too. The situation was similar, the press told the Stones to be dead and gone. And there some similar songs on BB: Dear Doctor and No Expectations. But I cannot imagine this electric guitar sound of Shattered on this LP. And I cannot imagine an acoustic version of Shattered either.

I hope, you understand what I try to say...

Similar to "Shattered"? Please send me some of your mushrooms.

Yeah, similar. I'm just talking about the lyrics.

After the 1967 crisis with the police and Their Satanic Majesties Request they had a famous kind of comeback with Beggars Banquet. On this LP there are these two tracks, that are about this topic. Dear Doctor is sarcastic: Oh help, I'm damaged, sung by a beer drinkers choir. No Expectations is melacholic, there is no way out, put me in the train...

And so is Shattered. The punks shouted, the Stones should retire. There was the hard time for Keith. But the Stones had some kind of a comeback again. An album which kicks ass. I've been shattered, what does it matter?

I would send you some, Elmo, but... I hate mushrooms. winking smiley

hm - well, not that i've ever gone looking for similarities, but since you bring it up:
doesn't Jigsaw Puzzle spring more easily to mind than No Expectations?

Killer song - both versions, even though the live versions are faster

I hated the studio-version.
After some years, I took to it more and more, now, it's "ok" for me...

It is one of my favourite tunes. From the start when the record was released I thought it was most noises without melody…

One of their best songs, one of those Keith jams that turn to gold.

for mois, this one stands out not only for being unusually distinct from most of the rest of the 'hit' catalog per se...
...but also because it's so fully realized in vision and execution.
i particularly find that little musical bridge where they step up a key (or several) and the cool little rhythm lead thing that follows it, to be particularly engaging, really lights things up...really soars on out and leaves you breathless...very cool move.

Love it, love it, love it. I think it's one studio song no live version has ever been able to touch. It bugs me how Mick overdoes the "uh - shadooby." It should be subtle, and only come in at the end.

Funny enough, I think my favorite live version is in the empty stadium before the 89 tour, but then they dropped it from the set before the first show.

They did play it at the first show. There was a power failure at the end of the song. It wasn't played again on that tour.

I hate to say it but it's one of my least favorite. I never knew what all the hype was to Some Girls. I never thought it was a good album at all. Give me ABB any day.

REALLY
I have seen the Stones 13 times and only have only seen Shattered 3 or 4 times

EVERY one of those shows had Dice (OK with me as I think it is great) and at least 9 of them had Miss You.

Miss You SHOULD go, Dice MUST stay and I will take Shattered anytime they wanna play it for me smiling smiley
