Liam was absolutely brilliant. To be honest, I basically went because - well, hes 72 years old and you would imagine there cant be too many more opportunities to see him - so I wasnt expecting a great deal. He walked onstage and mentioned that he was recovering from a chest infection, so my hopes were lessened even more. Couldnt have been more wrong. Sang for almost two hours (with a 15 minute intermission), had the audience eating out of his hand from the first minute, and as for the voice - well, if thats what a chest infection does to you, I'll have two of them. And the STORIES - if he wasnt one of the greatest folk singers of the last 50 years, he could have had a career as a stand up comedian. Incredible performance, plenty of old standards ('The Irish Rover', etc, plus "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and Dylan's "Restless Farewell" to finish. It was a privilege to be in the same room as him. Met him (by chance) before the show just as I was walking past the club and he was arriving, and then afterwards for a pic. An absolute gentleman.
Sinead's appearance was at the Waterfront Hall as the closing night of the Belfast Cathedral Quarter Festival. Tickets were free subject to being succesful in an application. She was backed by her own band and the Ulster Orchestra (some 40+ musicians). She sang for about an hour and a half. Some of her own hits, some covers, some new songs. Was a bit hard to make her out on the noisier songs (due to the drums being so loud), but on the quieter ones she held her own very well. First time I'd ever seen her. She seems quite shy, surprisingly enough and doesnt interact with the crowd much, most of her attention being focussed on making sure she was getting her cues right. The show was broadcast live on BBC Northern Ireland and you can listen to it again there for the next week:
