Taking my kids to see Lana del Rey. Cat Power thinks she's good, so she must be good.

C

NME just gave her a rave review for a show in London. [www.nme.com]

Lana's got something, I hope to see her live at some point.

I was at The Hyde park show and the show in Amsterdam a week before. Both shows were spectaculair. Very very impressed from what I saw. Her voice is stunning and she has an aura of mystery around her. Lana lives in the wrong area. She belongs in the late sixties / early seventies. She would be a good match with Jim Morisson. This year is her breakthrough to the mass audiences. She’s on her way to super stardom (as not already).

I'm seeing the Doobie Brothers 50th anniversary tour tomorrow night, Friday, 7/14/23 at The Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua, NY. Never seen them before. Can cross them off my bucket list....

Sadly, Tom Johnston, the lead singer and guitarist for The Doobie Brothers, would not be able to join the band on the summer leg of their 50th-anniversary tour in order to undergo surgery to target back pain.

While I've not seen her live, I've been on board with Lana Del Rey since her debut album. A glamorous, great beauty with a seductive, langorous delivery of beautiful original songs with provocative, dark, doom-y lyrics? I signed on first thing, have her albums Born To Die thru Norman F*cking Rockwell and am getting Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.

Her personae and whole image was so niche and specifically revolved around youth, sexiness, and radiating her aura of a tragic beauty, however, that I truthfully did not know if she'd be able to continue on her same or a very similar career pathway after putting on considerable pandemic weight. Nobody's supposed to even mention weight in our current body-positivity-for-all era, of course, but everybody in the entire entertainment industry -- and of both sexes, but women definitely bear a far disproportionate burden -- knows they take a career risk if they gain much weight.

What Lana Del Rey has shown recently is that she is indeed navigating her change and continuing on, unbowed and undiminished. Talent won, and she has it.

The Who in Durham on Wednesday — Chester-le-Street to be exact, a town situated between Newcastle and Durham. Was originally going to the Edinburgh Castle second night, but had to scrap it due to a holiday and sold the ticket.

Looking forward to seeing them on the cricket ground instead of the Esplanade!

In the 1970s I totally wore out my Silk Degrees album. Classic cover art on that one, too... it was the complete package.

May 3rd I loved the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' sold out, tour-opening concert I saw in DC. But then when a Boz Scaggs gig popped up on the same date here in Richmond, I was sorry to have to miss that. Sometimes the wealth of riches that is live music in 2023 has its unfortunate conflicts.

I saw Cheap Trick at Chicago's Metro on the 16th. They are still ripping it live! Rick Nielson is so good!!
Upcoming shows: Incubus on Sunday, Pearl Jam in Sept and maybe Springsteen at Wrigley and Aerosmith/Blk Crowes in Nov.
Also on the radar: Riot Fest, Amyl & the Sniffers (for the 3rd time) and Porno for Pyros.
I have to say that it seems ticket prices for some bigger acts are exceeding what the Stones have been charging! I'm looking at you, Aerosmith and Pearl Jam.

Patti LaBelle next week at the local Ventura County Fair free with price of admission to the fair.
Might also go see country boy Trace Adkins for free the following week at the fair, and then maybe 38 Special followed by Tesla - also for free.

Yes! Cheap Trick is still elite. Saw them open for Rod last time they were in Nashville.

I’m seeing Pearl Jam 9/10 in Indiana ($81 total for a grass ticket), and Aerosmith (w/ The Black Crowes) in Nashville ($293 total for a seat in section 103). Aerosmith seems high, but I was pleased with the Pearl Jam price.
