Picture isn't of Stargroves (the house that is smiling smiley ), I haven't been inside it but from the outside it is unlikely to have double glass doors inside as well as all the Baroque twiddly bits in the ceiling and over-door mouldings. Much bigger fireplaces too. I don't know when Nellcote was built and don't know enough about French houses, but that fireplace is pretty small for such a grand house, so likely to be modern.

Wow... THAT's a front door...

As for the kid in the pic: Marlon would be around three years old... Probably too young to be the kid in the pic. But who is the kid? I mean, the interview tells us that all doors were open and anybody could walk in, but I don't believe this blondie is some french kid from the neighbourhood...

The entire story of how the Stones recorded Exile in Keith's basement is more myth than truth. There's just seven tracks of wich only the backing tracks (drums, maybe some rythm guitar, maybe some bass) were recorded at Nellcote:

Rip this Joint, Shake Your Hips, Casino Boogie, Happy, I Just Wanna See His Face, Turd on the Run and Ventilator Blues.

Rocks Off, Torn and Frayed, Loving Cup and Soul Survivor were recorded completeley in LA, spring 1972.

All other tracks were recorded at Stargroves and Olympic Sound throughout 1970, and overdubs were added in LA, spring 1972. Overdubs means all keyboards, most guitars, all brass, most bass, all lead vocals, all backing vocals. All in all I guess about 20% is recorded at Nellcote.

Nellcote is an important place as it did set the mood for the entire album. In this way, Exile can be seen as a concept album, showing the darker, seedy side of Americana music mixed with English Rock&Roll drugs royalty.

WM we had rooms like that 4 years ago when we moved in. Believe me, you don't want dry rot to get you in its clutches smiling smiley. I can smell it all over again, looking at that photo.

Maybe it was a missed opportunity and we should have rented them out for recording with authentic Nellcote vibes winking smiley

No offense, but it has been widley discussed by Keith, Andy Johns, etc, that Rocks Off & Soul Survivor were absolutley recorded at Nellcote - among others you said that weren't..

Also - songs like Sweet Black Angel, Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia, etc were all worked on while at Nellcote...

Christ - Andy Johns has mentioned having 25 hours of Nellcote tape on Tumbling Dice alone...

Are there any band photos from these other sessions in 1970 and at Sunset Sound in 72?
