Leeds - When has Keith sounded better on Little Queenie and Bitch and that other
guitar guy named Taylor sure helped and played his role.Sure sounds like a whole lot of groovin and weaving going on.When has satisfaction sounded so funky and groovy.

and the intro to Midnight Rambler! What happened there - did anyone bust a string? So funky. Best Stray Cat Blues ever on this one.

It's a shame that the recording is only in mono.

Great verion of Love in vain and Midnight rambler (blues style).

I so not like Satisfaction on that recording.

I hope there's nothing wrong with mono, I got a lot of mono records.

Interesting re Satisfaction---I always loved that version because it is/was so completely different to how they ever arranged/performed it. They went for the Otis Redding vibe.

I like Leeds, but to me, the whole show is soo different from the way they played in '69 and the way they played in '72---much more laid back.

There's nothing really wrong with mono but of course a superb stereo sound is much better. Compare only the Let it rock mono version with the stereo recording and you know what I mean.

Am I the only one who never really liked the Leeds boot as much as most other '69-73 recordings? The sound is superb, of course, but I think the performance is a bit lazy. Not bad, but not really as top notch as everybody make it seem like. Perhaps it's because there are so few good sounding soundboards from this era, '71 in particular. I like the Roundhouse '71 performance better, but the recording quality isn't too good on that one.

I don't think the Leeds show is a great performance. It's not as intense as the '72/'73 shows. It's also sloppy at time I think. Everybody always makes such a big deal about it because it sounds great but in my opinion, it's not a great performance. It's just the only one from that tour (the Marquee recording was not actually a part of that tour). I think it's funny that people talk about how great it is when it's the only soundboard from that tour. That could have been far from their best show and yet people talk about it as if it's one of the best shows they ever did. It definately has it's moments. I love "Let It Rock" and "Stray Cat" and "Dead Flowers".

as a blanket statement, that's not true. there is nothing inherently better about stereo sound.

no! I am with you on this one. Leeds is only good for Keith on Let it Rock & maybe Bitch..and that's about it ! The Stones play better on the 1969/70 tour than here...give me an out-of-tune Miami Rock concert any day ! smiling smiley

Yes, they're a bit laid back in Leeds, but sometimes you've gotta play that one. Very different atmosphere from other Taylor era shows.
And the songs mentioned...Let It Rock Stray Cat Blues and Dead Flowers are the best ever versions of those songs, maybe apart from the studio versions.
To me, Midnight Rambler is the only song, that leaves a bit to be desired....the other songs makes sense certain CD/LP-evenings.
I think there was a tremendous party in Liverpool...

A couple of different sources say that there was a soundboard recording made on that tour in Liverpool but it's never surfaced. I hope it does someday.

Yes, and Bristol+Brighton too.
I guess those tapes will never surface. They will rot away in 2090.
Sigh.

I do think the '71 tour was interesting because it was more sophisticated, in some ways, than '69-70, but still not as overblown as '72-73 (not that I don't love those years too). Jagger and Taylor, in particular, were more resticted. Keith was perhaps a bit too zonked too much of the time. Hard to say how the tour was in general, when few recordings are available and people's accounts differ (Wyman, for example, was pretty negative about it).

Interesting to hear, anyway, that I'm not the only one who don't really like the Leeds show too much.
