Different musical genres of the Stones
Posted by: RollingStonesFan ()

Of yourse, you can deal it easily by saying "The Rolling Stones are a rockband", which is correct, but it doesn't tell too much about the affluence of different musical styles, they play.

Here my ideas:

*ROCK'N ROLL
- Star Star
- IORR

*ROCK (Stones-Style)
- Brown Sugar
- Start Me Up
- The Last Time
- Sad Sad Sad...

*FUNK
- Hot Stuff
- Rain Fall Down
- Look What The Cat Dragged In

*PUNK
- Shattered

*DICSO
- Miss You

*POP
- Angie
- Anybody Seen My Baby
- Streets Of Love

*COUNTRY
- Dead Flowers
- Sweet Virginia

*BLUES
- Back Of My Hand

*PSYCHEDELIC
- 2000 Lightyears

Any addings or advancements?

*BLUES
- Back Of My Hand

A strange song choice to pick for a band who were pretty much exclusively a blues and R&B band to begin with

You forgot their expansion into world music which they did so majestically on 'Continental drift'

Not to mention the omission of R&B and reggae, amongst others

I wouldnt call "Shattered" 'punk' by any stretch of the imagination. 'Lies' and 'where the boys go' might marginally fit into that category, though.

I submit that 100 years ago is their first ablum track that had a disco influnece. listen to the clavinet part. its has a real 70's disco beat.

you dont think that a song recorded in 1972 is a bit early to be described as being "disco influenced" ??

no. Billy Preston's "Outta Space" came out in 72. I was wrong about the Hustle. that was 75. but outta space was 72.

1975.

Not sure if he was still around, Billy would thank you for referring to his music as 'disco' but I suppose defining genres and their origins is a matter of opinion...

Personally, I would have said 'disco' music as we know it didnt really take off until about 1975 or so.

Interesting piece on wikipedia about some of the songs that influences it :

Hold On. I'll Look up Outta Space. I dont have my billy preston CD with me, so I just saw on Google that Outta space first appeared on the Ablum "I wrote A simple song" which is dated 1971. and then it appeared on other albums.

100 Years Ago is definitely FUNK, not disco (although they're closely related). The clavinet was a major funk instrument, and the whole genre was at its height around that time, before it became overrun by disco (which is essentially a slick white man's adaption of the black man's ghetto funk). Same with Fingerprint File, Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo, Hot Stuff, Hey Negrita, etc. The disco influences were more obvious on Some Girls and Emotional Rescue.

yeah, I would considere 100 y a. to be disco influenced. whereas Miss you and ER are actualy disco songs themselves.

but if you listen to the clavinet part, right after the break in 100 years ago, to me thats not funk. that part sounds like disco all the way to my ears.

well, its all in how you phrase it I guees Too. somehow, I dont think he'd be offended if Id have talked to him about it. I think billy was damn talented, and did that type of music tastefully. A lot of disco is crap, but I think Outta space is a great track.

*Gagaku
- The last part of "Can You Hear The Music"

Gagaku has been performed for over 1200 years.
It is a form of Japanese classical music rarely heard even in Japan.

I've always believed that the way the Stones cover all these genre is a mark of their greatness.
No matter what they play, it sounds unmistakably like the Rolling Stones... but at the same time authentic and true to the genre.
How many other bands have even approached this kind of versatility ?

Don't forget fake-Elizabethan: Lady Jane and Ruby Tuesday (especially if you listen to the instrumental-only RT - it took a long time to acquire lyrics).

And Parisian-cafe-chanson: Backstreet Girl.

What style is Break The Spell? I love the song but often wonder what it is? Can't think of another song quite like it.

Boogie Woogie? Don't forget the hidden Ian Stewart snippet on the end of the Dirty Work CD.
