Did anyone see the Stones perform in Los Angeles in the sixties?

Any memories? Comparisons to today?

My brother saw them in 71 or 72 at the Forum, he does'nt remember the exact year,maybe GAZZA could help out on that one,if they were in L.A. in 71 or 72.

Thank's for the info,he does'nt remember much of those gigs back then just bit's and pieces,it's a long time ago and everyone was frying. He lucky though he saw Hendrix there front row in 69 i thinkand alot of zep shows,the stories are unreal.

They only played Britain in '71, Frank

LA area shows in 1972 were :
9th June - Hollywood Palladium
10th June - Long Beach
11th June - the Forum (2 shows)

they came back on 18th january 1973 to the Forum to play the Nicaraguan benefit show too

Your brother must be a cool cat. That was a great show. The entire audience just fell in love with Jimi and the next year he played there kids "rushed the stage" as though they just couldn't help themselves. That was the beginning of "mosh pits," I suppose. Very little security, who didn't know how to handle it.

As a teenager I used to go to the Forum a lot and saw Hendrix both times. The Stones shows at the Forum in 1969 were completely stupendous. And the band have fond memories of those gigs -- "making it in LA" and all that.

Would love to hear from others who attended any of those early shows.

Hey stonesrule, have you ever heard of the Rose palace in pasadena? That's where my brother saw zep for the first time in 69,he did'nt even know who they were,they were warming up for vanilla fudge,he said zep blew them away, vanilla could'nt let zep warm up much after that and the rest is history. The Rose palace is a small auditorium,about 800 people.

Yes, was aware of the Rose Palace and the Zep gig that night is somewhat legendary for people who were there. I wasn't. Pasadena was a long drive...

Zeppelin, their manager and tour manager were wild ones, to put in nicely. Nice "nice" boys like the Stones and company!

The Stones concert at Hollywood Bowl last November had a great mixture of audience -- people who'd seen the band since the sixties in LA...good-looking mothers with their pretty teenage daughters. All ages and backgrounds were part of the crowd. It's pretty much Paradise to see the Stones or any great band outside in the beauty of the Bowl...tree-studded hillsides etc. Point I'm trying to make here is that LA was one of the first true "Stones cities" and is VERY loyal as a result of those GREAT early shows. It's a generational thing at this point in time, and the Stones are very obvious in their enjoyment of playing LA. Akin, I assume, to when they play at home in the UK.

How can you remember a concert so long ago, I saw them in '73 , I remember that I bought the tickeds, I remember driving to the concert, I remember with who I was with, I remember where I was sitting, remember that I told my brother that they probaly wouldn't play I'm A king ( as he was a fan from the early stuff) I remember a guy has climbed into the roof construction and was peeing on the people (I wish I had a catapult with me), I remember Mick trow buckets with water and I remember I bought a bootleg outside (Rolling Again).

Music !!!!
I remember that they played Midnight Rambler why because of the light effects they use when Mick hits his belt on the stage, but I don't remember the music itself.

I agree with everything you said, I first saw the stones in 78 at Anaheim,remember Jagger always calling us the shoe city from 78 to 88, he does'nt say it anymore,but it's funny when ever i see them in another part of the world i always say shoe city is here tonight. Kind of funny in Fresno i did'nt get to say it yet and he commented and looked at me and said i see your here tonght.

...i feel fortunate enough to have seen them wayyy back then,, at the bowl in 66,, the 69 forum,, the paladium 'warm-up' and all the forum shows plus the benefit and altamont, ..... and numerous shows since then in calif. . guess ya gather im a stones fan, a critical one at that,,,, since i was 14, 1964

I guess it depends on how many concerts you have attended in your life. I pretty much know every show i've been too,but i sure and hell don't remember all the details and i'm 41, I hope it's not just me or am i getting alzeimers?

Great story re "Shoe City." Maybe I'm wrong but I do believe the excitment, the thrill of discovery, the freshness of the music and the performance was generally more overwhelming in the sixties. I often buy "Flashpoint" CD since it's a mere $6.99 at Tower and give it to various teenagers I know in US and Europe. Once they hear it they wanna go see the band. And each time they've gotten hooked. Then they urge me to tell them every single thing I can remember about the Stones. The age thing just goes right out the window. It's all about the music and an energy jolt that only a handful of other bands can come close to.

Yes, I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl in '66 and the Forum in '69. I've kind of told these stories before, but there was a huge difference between '66 and '69. By '69, they had become a serious rock band, and put on an absolutely stellar performance at the Forum. For me it is difficult to compare them to today's version. They are not the same young guys playing fantastic new material. What are now the "warhorses" were relatively new then. Mick Jagger had gone from a sort of teen idol to a sophisticated performer. I was mesmerized by the Forum show.

By the way, it is after midnight and my brain is telling me to go to bed, as it is about to shut down.

Yes, Dave, those 1969 gigs at the Forum were magic. For the band as well as the audience. It was a different world then when nothing was more exciting than a great Stones gig.

Even though some of the "warhorses" (HATE that word but it unfortunately fits) were damned terrific at the Bowl last November.

I think some of us yearn for one more great evening of half blues, half rock with only the band on stage and no special effects.

I was at the 2nd show at the Forum 1969
Saw therm in 1972 & the benefit show in 73...

Saw them when Ronnie joined in 1975 too.

Like it's been said about 1969, the Stones then were a Kick-Ass R&R band with
the addition of Mick Taylor on Guitar!! I had been a fan of Taylor's having been
exposed to him via the John Mayall's Bluesbreakers Albums I had picked up thru
the 60's. He was the "PERFECT"!! addition to take the Stones to another level!
Jagger was in his prime in 69 also, man could he work the stage & crowd in those
days!!

1972 - Exile On Main Street had just been released and many songs from that
album were played.. Taylor's solo's on Love In Vain & YCAGWYW along with
Misnight Rambler and his slide on All Down The Line cemented him as the
"Premier" Lead Guitarist on the scene in the early 70's, with Peter Green
falling by the wayside, Jimi dying and Eric Clapton went into a Heroin stupor
after hearing about Hendrix. There was no comparison between Jimmy Page &
Taylor, at least to everyone I hung around with. Taylor was far superior!!
There where (2) Stones being talked about on the street in those days, Jagger
then Taylor, then Keith..

1973 - That benefit show was a wild surprise, Cheech & Chong opened the show,
funny as HELL!! then Santana, then the Stones. Jagger had just cut his hair short as he was planning on going swimming, down under for vacation then the
Earthquake hit in S. America. There is Video of them as they came out and opened
with Brown Sugar. Jagger looked like a FAIRY wearing a Diamond Tiara, eye-makeup
and a cape. Everybody laughed when he came out last..

Forgot to mention, tickets were $100. $25 and $10 I think. The day of the show
the radio mentioned that after setting up, there was more $25 tickets and come
on down. Actually, the $100 weren't selling,they were selling them for $25.
I got 18th row, little to the left of Taylor - GREAT SEATS!!! my girlfriend, a big Stones fan who had never seen them was blown away!! They were rusty at 1st, hadn't played in a while, but
after a few numbers hit their stride. YCAGWYW was the best number, Taylor did
a incredible solo on that one and got a standing "O" from the crowd at the end.
They did one "early" number I hadn't heard before. Either: Not Fade Away or
It All Over Now?? I liked it but don't think Jagger thought too much of it.

by the way, any of you catch hendrix at devonshire downs in northridge in i believe '69,, he didnt show for sat. so played like 3 hours sunday on a little elevated five foot island stage ya could just walk right up too,,, got boring.. .. charlie and bill would attend the brass ring on ventura blvd back then when bonnie and delaney were basically the house band.. they liked to smoke,, everyone was tryin ta get em up to the topanga corral, taj mahal was playin there all the time at that time too, among other noteables...

I was also at the Devonshire Downs show, called "Newport '69". I saw Hendrix on Sunday, in a jam session, with Booker T., Lee Oskar on harp, and many others. That 2 or 3-day concert was great. Others I saw perform that weekend were Jethro Tull, Chambers Brothers, Steppenwolf, Creedence, and . . . .???

I saw the Stones at the Sports Arena December 5th 1965, it was a great show. I've written about it on a cd called "Love Is Like Raputin". Real crazy show Brian was dressed in all green and it was nothing but screams. Then I saw them in '66, Mick had on white pants and a gold shiny shirt, Brian had on that striped suit he used to wear at the time. It was at the Hollywood Bowl, oddly enough I can't remember the date. Great show. The Buffalo Springfield opened for them. Saw the second Forum show in '69, the second show didn't start until way after midnight. It was Terry Reid, B.B. King and Ike and Tina Turner opening for them. Another great show that didn't end until the sun was coming up. All of the Sunday papers were on the wet lawns by the time I got home.

Magenta and Dave, wouldn't you say that second show was one of the greatest musical experiences of your entire life?

I believe this was the show that was delayed by a sports event earlier and I remember that virtually no one in the 20,000 crowd would have considered leaving. When the Stones came on it was THRILLING.

After the show most of my friends wouldn't have considered going home to bed. We were all starving, and there were very few places open so we ended up at Canter's Deli talking and talking and talking about the concert.

From the beginning it's been a love fest in LA for the Stones.

That was a most poetic line about the wet lawns.

But the upcoming show at Dodger is not for me. With a little luck there will be another Forum show right after.

Unfortunately, I attended the first Forum show, but it was great nonetheless. Great opening acts, too. As we left the Forum, there were another 18 - 20,000 in line to get in!. I got to my car and it had been broken into!

second show for me too,,,if i recall which might be 'hazy', it began around twoish,, and wasnt that the show where keith and mick sat down just together and played no expectations and another one?? ... that period was spectactular, stellar....... the 66 bowl jagger sat indian style on stage during the breaks in satisfaction shakin his tamborine above his head then get up and cont. . jones had the presents of front and center himself.. . . who caught blind faith at earl warren show grounds in santa barbara, ginger baker puking while hammering both his drum sets then drinking more milk,, classic,,the musicianship tore thru your body and mind...

I know its not in line with the rest of the thread, but since people have mentioned Zep and Hendrix, did anyone see the who in the late 60s-early 70s? Ive heard their initial performance of Tommy on the west coast was amazing.

Yeah, at the first Forum show, Mick and Keith sat down together and played a couple acoustically. I remember Mick saying, "I think I got a crick in my neck" Just a year or so ago, I got a copy of that show (LA Queenie) and it has the recording of him saying that.

There were a couple of screw-ups. The harp mic did not work, it kept feeding back on Midnight Rambler. Also, Charlie and the rest of the band were off tempo at the beginning of Street Fighting Man, and Mick had to clap his hands like a big crocodile for Charlie to get on tempo.

An unforgettable show!!!

Saw the Who at Monterey. They were tough. Keith Moon had that double bass kit with the naked women painted on them. They did "Pictures of Lillie" that night I think. The Dead was snadwiched between the Who and Hendrix, Hendrix was HENDRIX that night. I read that Robert Cristgrau, hated Jumping Jimi's performence. Met Keith Moon and Roger Daltry later that Summer at the Whiskey, we were all checking CREAM, Keith and Roger were cool.

That was my first show as well. I remember being disappointed by the show (I thought playing during the day robbed it off some of its impact) but I will never forget the piles of shoes on stage and the stage hands with huge push brooms sweeping them off the stage.... For me Staples in 2002 will be my fondest L.A. Stones moment though - my first non-stadium show, on my birthday no less, and the featured album was my favorite of all time, EXILE ON MAINSTREET. I was truly blown away, just the music.

There are concerts I know I attended only because I have the program (Dylan 78 comes to mind). My friends and I were ALWAYS blind drunk and stoned by showtime in those days.

But I do remember Zep at the Forum because of the laser deal Page did with his guitar did on the 77 tour. That got seared into my brain regardless of inebriation... Oh, and every Bowie concert is pretty much seared into my brain as well because, well, it's Bowie.
