Taylor v Carlos Santana

I believe there's some strong similarity in style between Mick Taylor and Carlos Santana and it would be interesting to know whether Carlos Santana was an influence in Mick's playing style. There's more than a passing resemblance on 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking' and 'Time Waits For No-one' for example although Carlos has never quite affected me in the way Mick Taylor has.

Two really great guitar players! Agree, Taylor must have been inspired. Though they were both original.

Taylor's been playing a song in his set for many years now that is very Santana-esque - called Goin' South.....

You can hear them playing together on Dylan's REAL LIVE.

This is a better comparison.

Taylor has the Santana tone and the blues style. So he 'fits' somewhere between Carlos and Clapton. Mick Claptos or Mick Carlton.

No, he's unique! Let's call him Mick Taylor.

Clapton and Santana had a baby .....and they called it Mick Taylor.

To me, santana seems to get much more attention in these kind of discussions--and in the vh-1 sort of potted rock histories--than his music seems to warrant. Does anyone actually listen to his albums? I agree he has a distinctive tone, but... I don't think I've ever met a santana "fan."

I'd say Taylor here. Like his playing better. Santana is BORING.

What's next?

Taylor vs. Eddie Van Halen.

Taylor vs. Steve Vai.

Taylor vs. Johnny Winter.

Taylor vs. BB King.

Taylor vs. Brian Jones.

Taylor vs. Muddy Waters.

Taylor vs. Robert Johnson.

Taylor vs. Jimi Hendrix.

We get the picture.

In fact in one of Mick's boots he dedicate this (Goin' South) to Carlos Santana, in one interview I made to Mick he told me that Carlos is great.

To understand Santana you should get the "Shut up 'n play yer guitar" box by Zappa. There is a track on it called "The secret Carlos Santana three chord variation.".
Then listen to a couple of Santana solos again. Zappa's satire is brilliant.

Listen to the first four Santana-albums. Then we all know what a great guitar player he was.

cc, are you kidding?
I listen to his early albums all the time! Esp. the III, Caravanserai and Lotus. Have a spin at Lotus (live in Osaka, July '73) and tell me again Carlos was not a great, incredibly inspired and widely "read" music creator!
Sure, no accounting for taste but...
The creme of the creme for me!

Odd-beat, you are the first santana fan I've ever "met." All I've heard is Abraxas, which has the well-known radio tunes, but is rather thin songs-wise.
