Ok, a new mystery to solve...

What amp is Keith plugged in to for their appearance on the Eammon Andrews Show in 67!?

Bill is plugged in to a Vox UL-760 guitar amp. The one and only time where I have pics of him using one of the 7 series Vox amps.

nice find indeed. the shots from the El Mo are by Ken Regan (maybe "BP" took the "portraits" of the amp?)
and the "shot of Keith at home in Connecticut" is actually from the place in Westchester County (NY)
that he was renting at the time. Ken Regan is one of a few photographers
who did sessions with Keith there in 77, so maybe he took that one too.

Wow. Y'all are nuts! Here I was thinking Keith just plugged in and had it miced. I've been stuck playing through Twins in Europe and in some US festivals and I hate them. I just can't stand them.

I guess Keith has better luck with them. Never knew he used ANY stomp boxes heh heh...

I don't think keith has to worry too much about how he gets his live sound. He knows good tone when he hears it. He plays around with whatever he wants to use and then says "...make me that sound on stage".
The rest of us aren't perhaps so fortunate ;^)

Hello. Terribly sorry to be so self-indulgent, but I'm wondering whether people might be able to offer an opinion. I've just bought a Fender Hot-Rod Deluxe amp, to play with my Mexican Telecaster. Any time I've tried a Hot-Rod it's sounded great so I'm pleased to get hold of one.
I wonder if anyone on here plays one and what tips any of you might have. I'm not a slave to the Keith sound - I'm trying to experiment to find a sound of my own if I can. Not too trebly, nice bit of gain with some decent reverb.
Also, I was thinking of adding some effects - tremolo and delay maybe - and Behringer are by far the cheapest. Does anyone know if they're any good??

Thanks, Declan

Those El Mocambo photographs are excellent.

Is this the same amp?

with the hot rod deluxe, I've got a blues deluxe and I find that if I hold back on the treble, middle and bass controls, I get a great tone that's not too piercing. It will depend on your preferences but just experiment maybe starting with them on zero and slowly change them around until you start to hear the difference. Also, I think they interact so changing the middle might change what the treble does! Also, I lay off on the brilliance control too. I typically have bass on 2 or 3, middle on 2 or 3 and treble slightly higher and loads of reverb - but that's just me.

My advice is to stick well clear of the Beringer effects. In fact, stick clear of effects generally unless you really need it. I do use some things from time to time but I go for quality over quantity. I use an Ibanez tube screamer which is great (though I have many other distortion pedals) and sometimes use either wah wah, phaser or tremelo depending upon what I feel like. I don't use any effects at all in my current band other than the distortion as it is better to do what you can with your natural ability rather than relying on a gadget to do it for you. All my effects are good quality stomp boxes. I once bought a couple of beringer pedals but they are unusable due to high noise generation, signal loss and poor build quality. They went in the bin (chorus and flanger btw).

So, have we worked out what those speakers are in Keith's twins?

Re: "Anorak" question re Keith's amps.

Yes. They're '80s made Celestion heavy magnet designs. Quite similar to the current Classic Lead in terms of build and spec.
I don't think that necessarily means that we can all buy Classic Leads and sound like Keith. Slight differences in the cone make up or suspension can have a big impact on the sound of a speaker...as can the efeccts of ageing.

A member of the les paul forum is claiming they are vintage 30's and that he was present when Cesar Diaz installed them.

Two 30 watt speakers in a 80 - 100 watt amp!? confused smiley

Vintage 30s are 60 Watt speakers. I use one in a 1x12 setup and one along with a 30 watt Celestion in a 2x12 setup. If it isn't the same speaker as what he's using, it's pretty darn close.

He says the vintage 30's were installed by Cesar circa early/mid 80's, around the time of 'Dirty Work'.

That fits in with spud saying they are 80's heavy magnet designs.

Is that an Ampeg Vt22 behind Wood below the Mesa?
I've never seen a picture of the Stones onstage with one.
Is that Wood's amp or Jagger's (with Wood playing through the SVT)?
Notice the Gibson Firebird far left (before the piano).

What speakers where in the svt's/v4s/vt22's that Keith did use? I have heard/read all sorts of types. Cerwin vega (sp) seem to have been used later in the 70s. Were they cts ceramics?

Go Dawgs!
