The Doors, Hendrix, The Who, ELP at Isle of Wight in 1970

Was anyone at this festival in 1970? Why was it banned until 2002? I have the Hendrix dvd from the show and man was he awesome. What a lineup!

The 2006 lineup:

The Isle of Wight Festival has sold out in record time with all tickets going by yesterday (March 14).

The sell-out comes a few days after Foo Fighters and Coldplay were added to the impressive bill.

Also set to appear at the festival are The Prodigy, Primal Scream, Editors, Dirty Pretty Things and Lou Reed.

The festival takes place from June 9-11 at Seaclose Park, Newport.

Look for a copy of "Message To Love", the documentary of the entire 1970 Isle of Wight Festival that finally came out in 1995.

It's an alternate-universe version of the Woodstock movie.

(There's also a video of The Who's complete performance there)

Like "Rock n Roll Circus", "Festival Express" and "When We Were Kings" it's great to see this buried treasure finally see the light of day!

Where does this 1970 festival rank with the other great festivals of its time?

Woodstock
Montery Pop
Knebworth

others?

I don't think that the festival was actually banned although the authorities on the I.O.W had probably had enough by 1971. The whole event was a commercial disaster - have a look at the film "Message To Love" and see how close the whole thing came to totally collapsing.

There were a lot of great acts on the bill. The Who were probably the highlight although from what i have seen Miles Davis was great too. Some people think that Hendrix was just going through the motions although I quite like his set. The Doors apparently played in almost virtual darkness - Jim did not like spots on him perhaps because he was becoming a fat bastard - who knows.

I really like the sets by Jethro Tull, Free, and Taste

There was a bad "vibe" at the whole event because many people bought tickets in advance but a whole lot more turned up hoping to pay on the day or simply sat higher up on the hill where they could hear everything for free. Another contingent of anarcho political types believed that all such events should be free and tried to break down fences etc.

Ive got the Message To Love DVD.
Don't pay that much for it. There is something VERY annoying:
All (or almost all) songs have been edited, like the "Let's Spend The Night Together"-movie. It's so stupid. Apart from that, it's interesting to watch.
My favourites are
- Kris Kristofferson. It's so funny when he plays, I think he is marvellous drunk. And it seems like he just quit in the middle of the song, while the band keeps playing. Just walk off stage with a cool grin, just as if the audience didn't like him.
- Leonard Cohen. He really shines here. In a long coat, which I think is his famous blue raincoat), while the rain falls. He sings very beautiful, and you hear the backing-girls and a strange instrument in the background. Too bad it's only 3 minutes of Suzanne. He looks as if he's in another world, in a good way. Perhaps you don't like Cohen, but you should, he's amazing.

I've always found KK to be incredibly sexy. He's got that twinkle in his eye that says he's up for anyting.

Every summer we can rent a cottage in the Isle of Wight if it's not too dear...
Just felt like saying that Beatles line.

Cindy,
Kris Kristofferson is really cool! Have you heard about how he got into music business? I think he landed a helicopter in Johnny Cash's garden, really drunk. And he told Johnny, that he had to be an artist, if somebody gave him a chance. I think he worked at a country-studio, doing a job (not as a musician). Something like that, like a movie-scetch.
Oh yeah, and Convoy was a nice movie. Dirty Lyle and Rubber Duck.

Erik,

Leonard Cohen is totally cool. CBC out of Canada just had a documentary about the real Suzannne who is kind of a nomad living out of a van. But in a good way. Not bad looking either. She was living in California on Venice Beach dancing for the crowds but I think she packed up and went back to Montreal.

How I got turned on to him, I was watching a rented movie (don't remember the name) that he made the soundtrack for and I kept saying to myself "who is singing these songs" so at the end I waited for the credits and slow-moed it (VHS) until it found out who it was. Next day I went out and bought the cassette. Love his talk over music style.

Caught Robbie Robertson trying to imitate him on a song a couple of years ago.

Anyways I can't believe so many great bands were at this festival. I heard of it but never really checked it out. How could anyone who was of age and into music not be there. (if you were within range of attending)

He was good friends with my late father in law, I met him at some family gatherings. He is really laid back, a good ole Texas guy.

That was probably McCabe & Mrs. Miller.

Also: Kristofferson worked in a studio in Nashville as a janitor while Bob Dylan was recording Blonde on Blonde.

Thats why ya chix are superior to us low-lifers (=men):
We fall for bimbos & ya for these elegant gentlemen/grim lone-riders.

Gives hope.

BTW it would also be nice to hear if anyone here on the board
attended the first Roskilde (1971?); Thy-lejren or Gärdesfesterna/
Gärde Festivals 1970, 71, or 72?

I just read that Kris Kristofferson is releasing a new album, which is supposed to be really good.
