Can't Be Seen

I like this song. Does anyone else? Don't hear too many people talking about this one.

There was a funny thread about it a while ago. Something about it sounding like a song for the Rockettes to do or something. Real cheesy and cornball.

That said, I actually like the song and wouldn't mind hearing Keith bust it out at the Stade de France this June!

it's just okay on the album - didn't come across well on the tour, though...

It's a weak song, with shitty production.

Typical of Stones 'new' songs since the mid eighties. Everyone says "classic!". They play them on whatever the current tour is, then never, or rarely again. They know they're not high quality.

Can't Be Seen really intrigues me - the way Keith is using his voice is so ambitious!
but i said all that in that previous thread about it: [iorr.org]

"What do you want - what?!"
- Keith

The only "Keith" song I don't like. Crappy production. Major letdown having just come off the brilliant Talk Is Cheap. I do like Slipping Away.

I like it, but don't think it's great. I'd put it in the middle of the pack of Keith's songs.

"Take all the pain...It's yours anyway"

I like it a lot. I even like the Flashpoint version.

I like the melody on it. It's a great song. The Flashpoint version is cool too. But then again, any of Keith's rockers are great. Aaaahhaaaii I just can't be seen with you. Yep, it rocks!!

I've heard a lot of bashing about this one. I agree that the sound on the studioversion, isn't that good, but no way is this a bad song. And it would be even better live, if they didn't have that "piano-sound" on the guitars in 89/90. Too bad, Keith haven't tried it on later tours.

This song is terrible. The lyrics are ghastly.

I like it, good song.

Ghastly?I've never heard of lyrics being described as ghastly before. To be honest, they are actually not that bad.I agree with the post by Erik_Snow.I think this song was rehearsed in '02 or maybe it was '97.

I love this song. Great singing by keith. I believe this and "almost hear you sigh" were leftovers from Keith's masterpiece Talk it's cheap. Anyone confirm??

I think it's a great song. Yeah, the production on the studio version is dated, but like with all 80's music, you really need to look beyond that. Live, it was killer and Keith always came up with scorching solos. Wonderful, wonderful and WONDERFUL again!

One of Keith's best songs. Beside Happy, Thru and Thru and Slipping Away.

Obviously the lyrics must have some deep meaning for Keith - He performed it continously throughout the Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle tour - but (IMO) it's a weak song. If we do a quick trawl through Keith's unreleased (and abandoned) songs such as 'Crushed Pearl', 'Deep Love' and 'I Got A Letter', to name but three, there are much better efforts than 'Can't Be Seen' languishing uselessly in the vaults.

Can't Be Seen is one of the few songs I can think of where, if you remove the vocal, it might not be identifiable as a Stones track.

It's definitely a bizarre little song musically, lyrically, and vocally. I like it on the album but not live.

Plus, the lyric sheet always cracked me up, with one line consisting of only:

Oh Shit

I think this song just cooks. It is so earthy and urgent.

Keith vocal is excellent, fully throaty - letting rip from the heart and soul.

But best of all is his lead guitar bits.

Better than anything on the Talk is Cheap. As is Almost Hear You Sigh..

It's in Top Gear. Stuff on TIS cheap hardly gets out of 2nd gear - nice grooves which don't develop into full-blown songs (except Could Have Stood You Up).

Both CBS and AHYS are fully developed. Yet the former is still raw and 'punk'

Keith has not played such good guitar since the SW album.

I've always liked this one (crappy production aside). It's one of the best Keith vocals I've heard.

I like it. I would say this with Slipping Away is the best pair of Keith sung songs on any recent Stones album (maybe ever? what do you think??)
I think this is another case of under rating Steel Wheels.
I did not know Almost Hear You Sigh was a Keith written song- thanks for that info.

Another great lyric from Can't Be Seen:

end up six feet underground
that's too deep for me baby!

@#$%& hilarious!

I read that the lyrics were inspired by Bill Wyman's relationship with Mandy, who was 13 when they met and 18 when they married. Hence, "I just cant be seen with you" But Im sure Keith put his own experience into it to. Stones songs have a tendancy to be about everything and nothing.

Sipping Away is really good, as somebody mentioned, but I think Sleep Tonight tops just about everything.

Cant be seen is possibly the worst song they ever wrote BUT the funny thing is that had it been released. produced and very veryimportant, sung byt Keith, with his current voice, in 1978 on Some Girls I would have loved it. In 1989 everything sucked, his voice, his style, the porduction of their songs, their songs etc. That whole comeback era really ruins it for me. With a 1978-Keith voice and style of singing and everything else, his 1978 persona if you like, it would have been a gem. Pity.

Yeah that was going on around the time Keith wrote it - could be true or maybe it was a journalist seeing events happening in stonesworld which would fit the lyrics. Adding 2 and 2 to make 6 in other words. Is there any more insights into the song?
