Robert Plant is still going. He put out a fantastic new album last year, Mighty Rearranger. He's still great in concert too, playing about 50% new material and 50% Zeppelin classics, many of them radically rearranged.

Plant is on the go still, agree. Santana was on (VH1?) tv
the other day; yesterday I saw Purple for the 2nd time in
Classical rockalbums-program... But I will always miss Mach/Mark II.
Dont miss Zepplin so much though; but I do miss John Bonham.

Since when is "one person" a "band"? WHat if that person gets into a fight with himself and breaks up?

Not many good ones, for sure
Moody Blues ?)
Chicago
Kinks (sometimes)
Beach Boys
Cream
Santana
Yes

Your'e right. Ican think of many solo artists; and even the bands I have listed are all in completely different incarnations. Yes is the only one that even comes close. Santana, Chicago, beach Boys, Joe Cocker are not even the sma ebands anymnore.

Very good point Mr Ohnonotyouagain. I have read nothing but excellent reports on how old Percy Plant himself has ditched the old superstar image and basically re-invented himself as a genuine new artist, and a bloody good one at that by all accounts. He's playing tiny venues and enjoying himself like never before with a bunch of new songs that even none-Zep fans can get into.

Pete Best just played a club here in town, he had someone else on drums, though. Creation is still touring. And I thought that the Troggs were all the original members.

This´ll be a little aside, but a female
friend of mine once danced with the ZZ Top
drummer Freank Beard. Easy to remember his name,
as he´s the only member in the group without a beard. smiling smiley

(Anyone heard anyone dance with the bearded guys?)

According the their website, ZZ Top was formed in 1969.

We´re convinced. But no record in the 60s, as far as I now.
Danish Gasolin´ (e.g.) was also formed in 1969, but I wouldnt consider them
as a 60s group, as they released albums 1971-1978.

Borderline cases... What century was Clapton´s Leyla released (1970):
60s or 70s?

On the other hand, this does hardly matter to other than us nerds here.

Leyla

by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon
Based on Nizami's 12th century epic poem, "Leyli and Majnun"

What'll you do when you get lonely
And no one's waiting by your side?
You've been running and hiding much too long.
You know it's just your foolish pride.

Chorus:
Layla, got me on my knees,
Layla, Begging, darling please, Layla,
Darling, won't you ease my worried mind?

I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down.
Like a fool, I fell in love with you,
Turned my whole world upside down.
Let's make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane.
Please don't say we'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain

Madonna, no?

Re: what other bands from the 60s are still playing music in 2006

I watched the new Madonna video the other day; the one where she is gyrating in the disco with the young boys, the way she always does. But for the first time I saw her in a different light. She came across as old. Trying to keep up with the young studs. her clothes and hair looked especially unfortunate. IMO that video just showed her ina most unfavorable light. Can't quite explain it. I love Madonna. I think she has always done what she wanted. Don't care about all the commercial crap that is hauled at her. The Stones are very commericla too.
I'm kind of into the fact that she is hard on herself but in that video something is off.

Maybe you, Chelsea smiling smiley ... Best she´s done for years & years...
I agree though her clothes are weird, some late 70s retro.
...But considering the lady is 47 rapidly movin towards 48
I must say I´m impressed.

her first record was 1983/84!!

Michael Jackson, Diana Ross. Cher and Stevie Wonder would be a few more examples of 60's performers who are still active and successful

I saw Neil metnioned but Crazy Horse is still out there as far as ai Know (they were the Rockets on LA 60s scene)..

others worth mentioning, who have been around in various combinations are Nick Gravenites, Barry Goldberg, Sam Lay..who were in out and around the Electric Flag, Butterfield, currently together doing the Chicago Blues Allstars (along with Harvey Mandel, Corky Siegall)....the CBA are amazingly hot and vibrant...Nick is a hell of a survivor, author of "Dead People Pay My Rent"...(he wrote a lot of tunes that others made famous- Janis, Bloomfield, Butterfield..) I think CBA has a DVD out there

.... and unless Simon and Garfunkel, a duo in which one of them doesn't do anything can be considered a "band". (This is what is known in the music industry as The Hall and Oates Equation.)

One more thing: The members of Crosby, Stills, and Nash often say that the reason they didn't call themselves "The Spiders" or some damn thing is that they wanted to make sure that if they broke up, one of them couldn't put a new band together and continue to call it "The Spiders" without all the original members being there. Of course, there are ways to get around even this. You may remember that when Carl Palmer left Emerson, Lake, and Palmer for a time, they replaced him with Cozy Powell. In this way, they were still able to put "ELP" on all the tickets, posters, and t-shirts.

How many on this list are promoting a "new" album - in fact a Top 5 album.
Who on this list just set a new record for highest grosing tour?

I thought the Kinks did their last show sometime in the early '90s, but I wouldn't swear to it. Does anybody know for sure?

We are interpreting the subject of this thread loosely to mean "artist or band" rather than just "band." Yes, that's not what the question said, but just like the Stones we are making our own rules smiling smiley
