As a fan of Bad Company, I probably wouldn't put them in over Free or Mott The Hoople. I think the others were more influential and lasting, but that's not meant as a knock to Company. They obviously had some big hits (Can't Get Enough, Shooting Star, Feel Like Makin Love) and those first two albums are pretty top notch. And as always, compared to who's gotten in already, yes I'd put them in. But in a real hall that doesn't feel as tainted, they wouldn't break my "very good" meter, whereas the Hall should have an "excellent" meter. I wouldn't say Hoople or Free get there either, but I could make more of an argument for them than Company. Maybe I'm being too harsh on the one I love. There's no one like Rodgers.

That's very interesting.

Let's say North America in terms of influence. Very long story short there's a band on tour, currently, as of April of 2025, that has, like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Beatles, The Who and Black Sabbath, had a HUGE influence on...

Are more whatever better than less? Yet those less are on radio in 2025.

It's nice to celebrate but it's unnecessary. So whoever/whatever will get...

Meanwhile in the last 15 or so years, U2 broke the Stones record which was broken by... and... not any of them are worried about awards etc.

The RARHOF is a farce for industry to enjoy. It probably won't be that way much longer.

Them revealing on American Idol truly just tells you everything you need to know about this "institution". What a joke. Shocked KISS won't be there to play on the show while it happens.

Pretty sure their fans, rightly so, didn't feel there was any bother in doing so. Its not an actual comment on their popularity.

Nice to see Nicky Hopkins' career as one of the U.K's prime session pianist's getting it's due. Likewise for Carol Kaye, one of the most prolific session bassists of all time.

I don't understand something, is the vote just a "suggestion"? How is it that Phish doesn't get in, and White Stripes do if it's based on the vote?

There's about 600 voters in the RRHOF. The fans ballot is equal to one single vote and does not guarantee the artist will be inducted.

Phish Didn’t Get Into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. WTF?

They're unrivaled in the jam band realm, with jillions of hours of live tape out there to prove their greatness. But guess that wasn't enough

Very happy for all the inductees of course, a bit bummed some missed out, but overall it seems like an ok year.

Speaking of Nicky, it says on his Wikipedia article that he was working on an autobiography, did any of that material ever surface. Seems like wonderful reading.

Well... lol.

I'd say of the people that got in, I truly only really think The White Stripes deserve it, based on what a Hall Of Fame should probably be. Curious, but doubt, Jack will try and organize a reunion. I'm guessing Meg just won't show.

I'm a fan of many of the rest of the lot that got in, I just would say they are very good and not the best of the best. I've seen or been a fan of Bad Company, Joe Cocker and Soundgarden forever. I've never thought Soundgarden was as influential as Pearl Jam or Nirvana, and its very sad that Joe Cocker isn't here to accept his award in person. While he wouldn't be on my shortlist, if you were gonna induct him at some point anyway, should have done it while he was alive. The Hall has disgracefully done this to so many over the years.

I get Chubby's influence but I really wouldn't put him in for one single. Is what it is, I won't complain, but yeah. Either you did it back in the 80s or 90s, or you clearly just didn't think he was super worthy. As for Cyndi, She's So Unusual is a great album. Maybe a couple good hits after that. I wouldn't think she has the career that warrants this but she's still around and I'm sure she'll be very happy. I like OutKast but they aren't rock so I guess they're the obligatory "we just induct everyone now" of this year. At least it was only one this time.

To me, its very silly and actually absurd Oasis and Phish didn't get in. Again, take the fan element out of it, they are hugely influential bands that have accomplished what few others in music have. Sure, they'll get inducted again (though this was Oasis' 1st and Phish have been snubbed for a very long time now) but based on the nomination lists to me those two and The White Stripes were the actual ones that fit the "nonexistent" criteria of the Hall Of Fame. Massively successful, hugely influential, and longevity. I've always said if you are two of the 3 of those, you belong and I'd say they are really the only 3 that do.

The rest that didn't make it make sense to me. Based on who they did pick, an argument could be made for The Black Crowes if they're inducting Bad Company and Soundgarden, IMO, but I'm sure they'll make it some other time. Billy Idol's good but to me, like Chubby and Cyndi Lauper, a couple good singles and decently big in your time wouldn't get you in for me. Mariah goes without saying, Mana (who I like) kinda the same. Big but I'd never argue fit this category. I truly don't know enough about Joy Division/New Order to comment on whether they were worthy or not.

They got enough people that I'll watch, but we've really reached the scraping of the bottom of the barrel here. Still some huge outliers that have yet to be rectified by this pathetic excuse of an organization that I already give too much time to.

Oh right, the side categories. Pathetic that Warren Zevon is getting in the same way as Judas Priest, as some sort of back door consolation prize. Truly appalling, but sure, he'll now be "in" on a technical status. Should be done the same as the regular bands. Thom, Nicky and Carol definitely feel deserving, same with Lenny. Salt-N-Pepa is just dumb and even more of a slap in the face to Zevon that he is somehow listed with them. Sure, Push It and Lawyers Guns And Money are totally the same. Laughable.

Chubby Checker had other hits than The Twist (which was a #1 in 1960 and 1961 and his only #1). He had 5 other Top 10 singles. Perhaps it's more to do with how The Twist was such a huge song and how it was a cultural phenomenon.

The official website doesn't say this, Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists' contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll, which is on the Wiki page, and is a much better read than the official site, with an interesting bit about why Cleveland was chosen.

In regard to not-rock acts, the Dolly Parton section illuminates the rock hall's version of expanding beyond its original inception:

Although Parton had asked to be removed from the ballot because she did not think of herself as a rock artist, the hall responded that "From its inception, rock and roll has had deep roots in rhythm & blues and country music. It is not defined by any one genre, rather a sound that moves youth culture. Dolly Parton's music impacted a generation of young fans and influenced countless artists that followed. Her nomination to be considered for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame followed the same process as all other artists who have been considered."

That explains rap, country and whatever other. Perhaps the original name was intended just for rock & roll and there should be a Music HOF. There is the Country Music HOF, appropriately in Nashville.

They don't want Music Hall Of Fame because that doesn't feel like it has any distinction or gravitas, clearly. The "Rock And Roll" aspect of it is the draw and appeal to many, including the nominated artists. Makes them feel rebellious, genre breaking and transcendent. The whole place has really become a sham, which is sad. It was pretty rock solid up through 2007 or so. It went off the rails fast, the biases just became so blatant.

I genuinely think most people would agree and know who belongs and who doesn't. Whether people like em or not, groups like the MC5, Misfits, and New York Dolls for example belong in on influence alone regardless of sales. Elton John should have always, from the start, be inducted WITH Bernie Taupin. Ringo Starr doesn't deserve to be in the Hall as a solo artist. The architects of rock, blues, R&B and soul are pretty evident to most music lovers. Madonna and Mariah Carey don't fit that. These are all things everyone pretty much knows. But they want to sell tickets to the museum, they want the broadcast to be more star studded and a "must watch", so you get what we have now. A mish mash of legends, very good but not great, and essentially Grammy winning pop artists all in a Hall together that's supposed to be for the Rock And Roll elite.

Poor leadership and shameless ratings/money seeking destroyed what was once a respected, prestigious honor and club. It sounds like I lose sleep over it, but I'm just disappointed. Its so bad that at this point any year that's at least predominately rock based is a good one.
