This one hits hard. Hung out with him in Belfast just less than a year ago.

He was a great guy.

So terribly sad to hear this awful news.
Gazza truly one of the best contributors to IORR and his knowledge about The Stones and Bruce Springsteen was second to none.
I just hope he managed to see Bruce play recently in Belfast.
Thoughts are with all his family and friends.

I had been IORR's reader many years before I started posting. I was enjoying almost every word of him... Gazza's humour, Gazza's knowledge, Gazza's deep love for the Stones and the way Gazza was expressing his opinions.

I'm really shocked now...

RIP Gary. You 'll be missed...

Very sad news on this morning. Such a genuine guy, in-depth knowledge on so many topics, on and off. We met a few times before some shows. RIP.

Hello,

I dunno where to start really: I'm so sorry for his beloved Heather, whom Gary was devoted to and his family. Beyond them are a load of friends through his twin loves, Linfield F.C. and music. So much music like you would not believe!
There are a ton of people who knew Gazza better but hell, that ain't gonna stop me rambling for a minute or so.

I first met him at a Neil Young show at The Apollo in Manchester back in 2008: Graham and Johanna were there too. The last time I saw Gary was last month in Dublin for the Springsteen show. I reminded him of that first meeting and I gave what I thought was the correct month: he said no, it was definitely March. Of course he was right, hah-hah!

I doubt that I'll ever meet anyone who knows and cares more about music than Gazza: the term 'musicologist' sounds a bit wanky...and he'd waste no time in telling you just that, hah-hah! How about we settle on, 'proper fan'? The Stones, Bowie, The Beatles, Ry Cooder, Springsteen and especially Dylan meant so much to him.

Unlike me, he did not confine himself to legacy/old fart artists: no, he sought out new acts and had a pretty catholic taste- he'd chuckle at that term, I hope! As an aside, he knew his history too and was absolutely non-sectarian and had no time for idiots of whatever side.

Our paths only ever crossed at shows: he'd sort tickets for Dylan shows (cheers man) and it was a highlight whenever Bruce would play any shows in Ireland as Gary would be the focal point for hanging with- he knew everyone, or so it seemed. Right, Marge?

What makes this desperate news all the more shocking is that Gazza was in top form last month in Dublin: banging on about boxing, Fawlty Towers, GoodFellas...hell, you name it and we were all laughing.
Sending all the love and comfort to Heather and his family.

Go well, Gary...

Cheers,

Simon.

Terrible news!

Some people come here stay a while then they go. Gazza was a true pillar of the site. Like most of you I never met the guy but I always read his comments with pleasure.
I still remember that in 2012 he berated French fans for not doing their "job", that is sniffing around and finding the venue in Paris where a clubgig would happen.
Most of us doubted Gazza's claim but eventually he was right.

I wish the man a safe travel for his last journey.

That's probably true, and a testament to him.

Just one of the nicest guys you'd ever have the good fortune to meet on music fan sites. We were born on consecutive days, me May 29 and he May 30 so had a close bond because of that - especially with Ronnie and Charlie following close afterwards.

Here's a pic of us at the famous Pilot Inn in North Greenwich before the Rolling Stones show on Nov 25 2012. God bless you Gazza. Sorry for the size of the pic but it seems appropriate for someone who was larger than life.

This was very sad and horrible news to wake up to this morning with messages on my phone. Like so many others, I have such good memories of the times I met Gazza, who was unfailingly entertaining and universally loved, with a prodigious knowledge of all things music. I'm only sorry that I hadn't seen him more recently.

I have some photos that, being clueless, I will be prevailing upon A.N.Other to post, so patience please.

RIP, Gary, and condolences to his dear Heather and family.
