Okay, so is anyone going to calculate an average list? grinning smiley
That's halfway simple ...

1. I've count only the clear ten album voters and vote's with a clear ranking
2. best album = 10 points ... last album per membercount = 1 point
3. "Stripped" is not included (no studio album)

If there is no mistake by me - thats the final result by 37 voters :
01. Tattoo You --------- 349
02. Undercover --------- 258
03. Hackney Diamonds -- 243
04. Emotional Rescue --- 229
05. Steel Wheels ------- 205
06. Voodoo Lounge ---- 202
07. Bridges To Babylon - 197
08. Blue & Lonesome --- 173
09. A Bigger Bang ------ 139
10. Dirty Work --------- 102

That's my list!Except swap ER with VD

would be a bit unfair because my listening habits changed over the years. I used to buy a CD and play it many times. Not anymore.

So what do you do now? CDs never disappeared.

You don't buy CDs anymore it reads.

Are you saying, without saying it, that your listening habits have changed? You now stream a record for many times?

That's all that's left other than vinyl. How you listen to a record, regardless of format, has changed.
Even if I buy the CD, I got used to spotify, so I play it in spotify. The issue is that I don't have anymore this passion to listen to one single album over and over again.
As for HD, maybe I've listened the full album twice, before I've turned again to all kind of palylists.
Last time I've sat down to listen to a record, just listen, without doing anything else was a headstart of an Israeli singer songwirter. She invited the supporters to a place where she played the record (the CD, not live) with explanation of herself on the project. It was 5-6 years ago.
What I meant, is that I haven't given the same attention to HD or the blues album than to ABB and previous albums, even if HD is really good and it is.

07. Voodoo Lounge ----- 218
08. Blue & Lonesome ---- 185
09. A Bigger Bang ------- 145
10. Dirty Work ---------- 107

very, very close between Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge and Bridges

ER 4th? Interesting. Can someone explain by which parameters ER is better than SW, BtB or VL? I think in each of these 3 are greater songs than in ER, and the albums as a whole, well, no one of them is consistent in quality.
I see for example in [ultimateclassicrock.com] that this ranking supports IORRers having ER before others, but for me ER is among the weakests.

1 - Tattoo You (5) - No Use In Crying.
2 - Hackney Diamonds (4.5) - Sweet Sounds Of Heaven.
3 - Bridges To Babylon (4) - Out Of Control.
4 - Steel Wheels (3.5) - Almost Hear You Sigh.
5 - Voodoo Lounge (3.5) - I Go Wild.
6 - Undercover (3.5) - Undercover Of The Night.
7 - Blue & Lonesome (3) - Blue & Lonesome.
8 - Emotional Rescue (2) - Dance pt. 1.
9 - Dirty Work (2) - One Hit.

Finishing the list and I realize I forgot A Bigger Bang. It would go in between Undercover and Blue & Lonesome. 3 stars and the best track is Back Of My Hand.

Forgive me for revisiting this thread but do you still rank HD so highly? I only ask because 20 years ago when you were similarly asked to rank the best Stones records from 1978 to 2005 you gave A Bigger Bang five stars! But here we are some twenty years later and you can hardly remember the album exists. Do you have anything to say for yourself? Are you ashamed?

I apologize if it seems I'm singling you out but there are very few IORRers from twenty years ago still posting/breathing. But it may interest you and others to know that in that 2006 poll 54 people had ABB in their top 4 (and many even higher) while only 12 people recognized it for the big booger that it is. And yet in this more recent poll, ABB is treated like pond scum by the vast majority of posters.

Am I saying that in the future HD will be similarly trashed? You're damn right I am!

I’m not asking you to defend yourself. I’m giving you an opportunity to admit that a new Stones record makes you (and the majority of fans) so deliriously happy and hopeful that you are incapable of rational judgement. That’s why over 80% of posters raved about ABB in the 2006 poll while posters today readily admit that it’s ‘awfully bad.’ With respect, I think it’s fair to say that you (and countless others) were deluded back in 2006. The scientists say it’s a result of tiny dolphins racing through your bloodstream. Not your fault, really. (But you may wanna ask yourself if you’re deluded this time too.)

Oh look, we have a new response from ColdFandango. ABB claims its usual place near the bottom (check), TY on top (that’s an unassailable choice), and HD in the middle (hmmm, history up to its old tricks again but all things considered ColdF shows admirable restraint). My rankings are completely different but this is a list that does not turn my face a whiter shade of pale. Bravo!

Of course nobody needs my stinking approval. Please yourselves. I smile benignly at the many 4 and 5 star ratings for HD. I merely point out that there is strong evidence to suggest that the dolphins are affecting your judgement again. I figure you have a right to know.

Don't know if it is the dolphins or what, but I candidly admit that I am not capable of rational judgement when discussing Stones releases.

In fact, no matter the criteria I use to rate them, even the "worst" still make me deliriously happy.

If there is one point of your assessment that doesn't apply to me, that is my initial opinion on any given release remains substantially confirmed also after years. And when it changes, its for the better.

I love seeing Dirty Work on the bottom. It’s the only Stones album loved by non Stones fans. That says something.

DW is a hell of a album anyway

Fight, Winning Ugly and the title track are Ten outta ten for me and Sleep Tonight along with Stu's Key To The Highway are just heart- breaking

Brilliant

DW is a bit like TSMR in a way. There's a lot of really awful stuff on it, unlistenable, embarrasingly, highly WTF?
And then there's some stuff on it that's very good (more on TSMR than on DW) and some that's not bad and some that could have been better if they'd worked it. The production of DW didn't help.
Very good: One Hit (although they should have gotten rid of the 80s sound), Sleep Tonight and Harlem Shuffle
Not bad: Fight
Could have worked: Winning Ugly (a better bass sound, better drums and no cheesy keyboards would have made this a winner): great guitars, great voice, great riff and groove

ER 4th? Interesting. Can someone explain by which parameters ER is better than SW, BtB or VL?
[...]

The only two parameters needed are: Pathé Marconi and Chris Kimsey smileys with beer

Parameter #3 and #4: The songwriting and the wonderful playing. #5 the glorious production and mix thumbs up

All of what the others said. There is a looseness, a roughness around the edges and a sense of fun on ER, similar to Some Girls (although the quality is slightly less). SteelWheels is not bad, but it's too polished and polite, too clean. BridgesToBabylon has good stuff but also too many bad songs on it and VoodooLounge is boring, tame and uninspired.

"Are you ashamed?" Ridiculous.

Yeah really, trolling someone because their taste has changed? And honestly, putting in the research to see what someone said 20 years ago seems (politely) a little intense.

Why would I have to defend myself? Laughable.
I have no idea why I forgot it, but you can go back and see more of my posts where I state that ABB, as many other albums, suffer from length.
I still hold HD very high, but it will change at some point. I still like ABB very much, but it should have been shorter.

Initial praise is something that fades away, while albums fall into historical context over time. And that should be ok.

Well said. But the historical context in this case is that this album went from almost first to worst – that’s extreme - and I think it’s worth exploring the reason why. Especially since I think we’re seeing a similar scenario playing out with HD. But again, you don’t have to defend yourself. I quoted you only because you’re one of the few posters who has taken part in both polls. I hope they play Back of my Hand for you next tour. But I wouldn’t get my hopes up…

If you were ‘polite’ you’d be thanking me – I’ve given your thread a new set of wings.

But it’s fascinating (to me at least) how your thread and the 2006 thread mirror each other so perfectly. Don’t you find my research interesting? Or is the fact that human beings are so drearily predictable too depressing to think about? At any rate, I’m not trolling Jumping Kent. He’s just another Rolling Stones fan like you and me. I'm focusing on trends.

Tell me - when Bridges to Babylon came out, did you give it 5 stars? 4?

No actually I really never liked the album. 2.5 would be the highest I'd rank it and that hasn't changed. I never listen to it in fact. I thought OOC, Saint, Thief and ABSMB were standouts but generally quite disliked that album, and rank it just above (well, way above) Dirty Work. Maybe if it was a single album it could have held up better. ABB I quite liked when it came out, and it's dropped maybe half a star. Still some excellent songs and could have been much better, again, by cutting it down to one LP and adding Under The Radar.

I don't have a problem with your doing the research, sure that can be a bit of fun, but rather taking one persons reviews from 20 years ago, singling them out, and then asking whether they are "ashamed of themselves".

A reasonable person would suggest that's a bit much. As far as "reviving" my thread. WTF do I care?

I have lots of threads, some come and go, there just like street cars. I don't think they ever feel ABANDONED!
