good song but what happened to Keith´s voice ? after quitting smoking it should be strong but here it sounds rather thin, almost eunuchical
and it is mixed too far in the background

I was trying to understand what you meant here, but failed.

His voice certainly isn't mixed in the background at all. And I thought he sang this one really well.

love this track - even though (or maybe because) it's basically a re-write of All About You.

To me it's more a mash up of The Faces' Debris and Thru and Thru, but the lyrics directed to the Man upstairs. Can't see the similarities with All About You at all confused smiley

The riff is a part of the WH-chord. Classic Keith, teasing a groove out of a couple of strings when finding a sound he likes.

I don't think TMS resembles any of the songs mentioned here.

The track suits like a glove on HD, because of its self-reflection lyrically and poignancy musically. A welcome lyrical break from Mick's girl problems smiling smiley

A very nice tune, imo.

There have been so many slow ballads by Keith by now, and I have grown tired of them ages ago, but still I think "Tell Me Straight" has some kind of freshness in it. It is just so simple, straight-forward and sincere. No bull-shitting, no over-interpretation. No crooning, but real singing. The endless 'oh baby, baby, baby' and its variants are gone nor any sort of cliche-like over-acted Keef role playing of, say, "Robbed Blind" or "The Worst", him knowing and making it too clear who he is. Of any of his old slow numbers, I think I need to go back to "You Got the Silver" or "Coming Down Again" to find something similar.

Besides, I think the number works very well in the context of the album. Short and sweet, but distinctive, supporting the whole. Like Keith solo spots once were (before they grew out of context to some sort of side shows of their own).

The verses are definitely reminiscent of Thru and Thru, but the chorus is very very close to All About You - the chord progression, the melody, hell even the lyrics:

Everyone is asking questions, yeah
I got one or two
Just need a little time just to clear the mind
And find out if it's true

Who'll tell me those lies?
Let me think they're true, yeah
I heard one or two
They weren't about me...
They were all about you

You can sing each over each other!

Hey, not that I'm complaining. Still a great tune.

Yeah, you are right there, peoplewitheyes (you do have them indeedsmiling smiley), there is a clear resemblance between the choruses of "Tell Me Straight" and "All About You". I didn't notice this before.

But to me "All About You" is like a cornerstone Keef 'jazz ballad' , and a blueprint for all those sleeptonights, slippingaways, howcanistops, losingmytouchs and thisplaceisemptys to come - using the idea of its in many, finally cliche-like variants, but never hitting the nail again. I think "All About You" is a masterpiece, Keith giving there all he got, all of his soul, a kind of once-in-a-life time EXILE experience of its own. It was a daring, a novel thing to do then, growing simply out of muse hitting him hard. Since then, he had tried to discover the winning recipe again, but with no such success again (some very nice tries, though).

To me, as a song and as a performance, "Tell Me Straight" reaches out (or back) to the times prior "All About You", like that song never happened, you know, to the innocent landscapes of "You Got the Silver" and "Coming Down Again". Surely, there are some technical features from it - and some of its variants along the years (like any 'new' Stones song cannot be free of references) - but as a statement of its own, as a whole (the structure, the arrangement, Keith's singing), I think it is, freshly, something else.

I am pretty sure that Andrew Watt had a role why the song turned out to be like it is, escaping some sort of cliches and formulas we have used to for so long. I like the kid. winking smiley

The lyrics might be similar but I found the melody, chords and decorations during the chorus (Faces' Debris) more similar to those mentioned.

And Keith adresses Jagger in All About You whereas he sings to God in Tell Me Straight.

Now, for some people those two might be the same cat but I doubt it is like that for our Keith...

I agree, Doxa, All About You is a stone cold classic. I absolutely love that tune - and the icing on the cake for me are the subtle but creative (almost avant guard) backing vocals ("want it want it want it want it...'').

Just absolutely brilliant.

(and this is coming from someone who has never managed to get all the way through Keith's Bridges ballads)

It's a beautiful song. It truly captures Keith's truths. It's magnificent. I love what he did on BRIDGES (and FORTY LICKS) but this is a whole other level.

There appears to be some ageism going on, not necessarily here, about the Stones. That's rather odd considering population.

A song saying something with or even about the artist in general as well as specifically within - especially with an artist/band - that challenges. Some are not up for it.

We're granted the ability to recognize.

If something in YOUR life doesn't match what's going on then the song won't take on, retain, and carry, that.

One day, some day, it might.

Otherwise it speaks. I appreciate what they say. It rings true.

That's a pretty good description.

Top 5 track of the album, and for certain days, for me, numero uno. The pair of Driving Me Too Hard followed by Tell Me Straight... followed with Sweet Sounds Of Heaven: excellent sequencing.

It's the best vocal delievery from Keith since Before They Make Me Run. It is not a highligt on the album, but it's not a track I'm gonna skip (none on the album are). I'm not a fan of Keith's Tom Waits mannerisms, and I'm relieved that he has grown out of those, maybe due to quitting cigarettes.

I agree, great vocal.

It's one of those "lesser" songs the Stones do that is made up by a fantastic performance. I'm not deriding it...they have so many well written songs, but also less well-written that are nonetheless made fantastic by an amazing in-studio performance.

Keith's best vocal performance (IMO) - 'We Had It All.'

'Tell Me Straight' is a decent little song but would seem more at home on a Keith solo album, Mick's backing vocals notwithstanding. Dreamy Skies and maybe Angry sound like my Stones while the rest is (mostly) Mick or Keith solo - a fact that Andrew Watt was paid handsomely to conceal.

Tell Me Straight is perfect with The Rolling Stones.

It couldn't be any better as a Keith solo song.

Andrew Watt did a fantastic job. He served the purpose of each song regardless of who was singing.

It's easy to say, Oh this would've been better on a solo album.

Bullshit.

Keith's solo songs - and Mick's - are good out of necessity.

Sweet Thing wouldn't've been any better as a Stones song - in regard to how it was done. Charlie couldn't've done any better, overall.

Take It So Hard couldn't've been any better as a Stones song in regard to its origin. "Oh it sounds like a Stones demo."

No it doesn't.

People need to get over the solo album aspect. It's 2023, not 1993.

Tell Me Straight is magnificent, period.

There's nothing about HACKNEY DIAMONDS that suggests it's a Mick album done by The Rolling Stones.

That's complete bunk.

There seems to be a lot more love on this board for Tell Me Straight than for what I consider to be its closest cousin - Losing My Touch.

Maybe I'm missing something, but they seem awfully similar to me, melodically and overall-quality-wise.

Can someone tell me straight why TMS is superior (if it is), before I lose my touch completely?
