Would be nice to hear this one official. Then again the whole gig released would be great. Okay I'm greedy!

Chanelle & Mick's vocals didn't mesh well on that one.

As much as I loved Chanel in Milan last year, this was horrible!

Best song representing the core and essence of the new album. Great vocal delivery and guitars. Cool solo followed by bridge about "dreary streets of London not promising much" and with beautiful harmonies.

I deeply disagree, at least out of sheer will. Allmusic calls this bizarre new wave, but has to admit it`s a "slight nod to the band's mall-rat rock of the early '80s". If this is the core and essence of the new album, then I`m off. I suspect this is an age thing. However, I admit "the dreary streets of London" bit has it`s charm.

-Too many guitars to make an old school riff fest.

This song and it's place on side one make it the best Stones album side since side 2, Tattoo You.

The strength of those 5 great songs on Tattoo You was that while different sounding they all evoked a great and consistent vibe throughout, a suite.

The difference on Hackney Diamonds is that the strength of it as a "side" is that the songs are so completely dissimilar (and individually great) that you never get bored as it shifts from mood to mood.

Just amazing songs and lovely sequencing.

My daughter calls this song Dark Wave like the Cure and Depeche Mode.

Funny, it just occured to me that this riff is sort of the minor version of the acoustic guitar riff at the end of "Trouble". And I think there are other songs where Keith plays a similar riff in his later years. The opening lick in the bass line to "Angry" is not far away from it either.

Here are my buddies and I attempting to play Whole Wide World a week after the release in October.
We only played through it a couple of times; it was a lot of fun to play.

I'm playing guitar - it's just a hobby band - we get together and play once a week in my basement, just for fun.

We had a singer, but he got married and quit a couple of years ago, so the fellow singing is NOT a singer, he's our keyboardist.
But he was a good sport and he agreed to sing the song for us as best he could.

Maybe some on here will enjoy this.... then again, maybe not. All good.

I think this song has a good groove to it.

More importantly, at some point in our life. we have all felt like the whole wide world is against us.

And I agree with Treacle:This song and it's place on side one make it the best Stones album side since side 2, Tattoo You.

It's one of their only more recent albums I have listened to again and again.

Bite My Head off Rocks! And this song fits well after it.

That was very good and good fun. Your guitar and your drummer, in particular. Well done. No offense to your bass player, but I don't have ear buds with me so I can't judge. As for your keyboard player, he does a better job than I could and was less distracting than the backing vocalist at The Racket. Hoping the official live CD mixes that one better.

The Stones should have stayed away from this scandalous song.

Classic dirty Stones.

Great tune. Look beyond Mick's stance and take it as life. He takes a common saying and turns it a bit on its head. Sure, some of it is pedestrian, "the party's over" bit, but the intent behind it all is what cuts through. A 79 year old man saying "but it's only just begun"?

Obviously he knows something.

The Ronnie-guitar rocks, the platitude-lyrics are awful.

Smashing ! Keith hasn't had that kind of "phaser"effect on his guitar since the 70s ;-)

A nice live version! All the three principals are doing a good work. Keith nails the riff and Ronnie's solos are powerful. I am surprised how well Mick delivers the song. I thought he might have struggled with the chorus, as it sounds like one of those hard to translate into live, but quite the opposite. And as far as the verses go, the cockney is even more distinctive here.

The competition is a tough one, but still "Whole Wide World" manages to keep its place as my favourite song on the album. It is just so fresh and energetic that it always makes me feel damn good when I listen to it. A simple, small rocker, but a little masterpiece I think.

Yeah, a simple, small song, but I think it tells more than any of the new tunes. It is like a bridge over different phases of British rock, starting from their old 60's pop era tunes - even using the old, but effective nude trick of turning off all the instruments for a few lines - and then reaching post-punk and Brit Pop phases. So English, like Muddy or the Americana ever happened. All that in one song. And like making a statement of 'look, all of this is same shit, man'.

So, for me the tune is the most novel sounding of the whole lot. They haven't sounded this different for ages. There is nothing 'Stones-by-numbers' at all. And placed after the punk song "Bite My Head Off", those two numbers make together a little sub-story of their own that gives a special flavor and character to HACKNEY DIAMONDS.

The lyrics to WWW aren't in any way awful, they work well for the music and they carry a nice message.

Yes, you are right with that, it's good to have the alternate audience recordings too.
