Bets on a fourth single - yes or no

What song you think it will be

What song you think it should be

Yes

Depending On You

Driving Me Too Hard

Both great songs, imo, for different reasons.

That they didn't bother to rehearse the latter even once before the tour doesn't bode well for a single release, though smiling smiley

I'm only going by what Polydor's Ali Tant hinted at - you've got the more single tracks, Angry, Mess It Up, Depending On You.

It's the only thing to even consider in regard to information including post-tour to fulfill their 18 month promotional plan. Because, ha ha, say they played Get Close live but didn't release it as a single at any time - then it doesn't matter if something they didn't play is released as a single after the tour.

Although - the majority of HD songs they played were the 3 singles.

Hackney Diamonds Grammy Eligible For 2025
Posted by: GasLightStreet ()
Date: September 10, 2024 23:55

I didn't realize music meant so much to Forbes. They have someone sitting around thinking these things up?

Do the Stones even care about this kind of stuff? I have no idea. I'm guessing No.

The Rolling Stones May Break Their Tie With Pearl Jam, Metallica, And Bruce Springsteen

Eligibility for the 2025 Grammy Awards closed recently. The window for releases hoping to score some love from the Recording Academy ended as August turned to September, which means the world has already heard every song and album that will eventually be nominated for honors—and win. The Rolling Stones are eligible in multiple categories, and they may be headed for several nods… and if they end up in one specific vertical, they’ll break out of a tie with some of rock’s biggest stars.

The Rolling Stones’ latest CD Hackney Diamonds is a possible nominee at the upcoming Grammys, and it could easily snag at least one or two chances to help the band add to their trophy shelf. The title was released in late 2023, but well within the window of eligibility for the 2025 ceremony.

The set should be considered a real contender for a Best Rock Album nomination. Nothing is certain, but the Rolling Stones remain one of the most beloved names in the genre, and voters love honoring legends, especially when they give the world reason to listen once again.

If Hackney Diamonds does wind up a nominee for Best Rock Album, it will mark the Rolling Stones’ fourth time being up for the award. They were actually the first winner of the prize, which they took home in 1995 for Voodoo Lounge. They were nominated again in 1998 for Bridges to Babylon and once more in 2006 with A Bigger Bang, though neither of those projects claimed the spotlight.

A fourth Best Rock Album nomination would help the Rolling Stones break their match with more than a dozen other soloists and bands in the field. Right now, the British rockers are tied for the fifth-most nods, but that may soon change. They could soon pass superstars like Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, and Muse, among others.

The Rolling Stones may soon stand alone on the list of artists with the most Best Rock Album Grammy nominations. Currently, Foo Fighters lead all names, with eight shots at gold. Neil Young is next up, with seven. Tom Petty and U2 are tied for third place, with five apiece.

Whether Hackney Diamonds left enough of an impact to be remembered by Grammy voters all these months later is yet to be seen, but there’s reason to hope for a nomination. Earlier this year, the band was up for their first trophy in more than half a decade. Their single “Angry,” which fronted the new album, was in the running for Best Rock Song, though the women of Boygenius earned the win with their single “Not Strong Enough.”

Eligibility for the 2025 Grammys runs from September 16, 2023, through August 30, 2024. The nominees will be named on November 8, and the sixty-seventh annual Grammy Awards will be held on February 2, 2025.

The new Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga song (co-written and produced by Andrew Watt) killed all the chances for a nomination for Sweet Sounds Of Heaven, the Stones song was a complete chart failure (it didn't make the Hot 100 or any airplay chart) while the new Mars/Gaga duet is a Top 3 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and still Top 10 after a month. Andrew Watt has a strong chance for song of the year there as producer and writer.

A nomination for best rock album is the best bet for Hackney Diamonds, but it will loose against Billie Eilish's album.

As I have said many times before, the stones could release their best music ever and at least in USA they would get limited air play so we can’t judge quality by air play. The days for hits are looong gone. They’re old and I’m not saying it but there is age discrimination. Sweet Sounds if released seventies early 80’s would have been huge

Die With A Smile has been out for 2 weeks, both at number one, on two global charts, while Sabrina is at number 2 and Chappell Roan at 3... Billie Eilish at 5.

Billboard Top 200 LPs is Sabrina for week two of two.

As pathetic as streaming is, the difference between the Stones and Sabrina is Sabrina's fanbase streams all day all the time (ok slight exaggeration) while the Stones, eh, way too much to listen to and half the fan base doesn't know how to stream.

What if Lady Gaga had duetted/guested with Mick on Wild Horses, as is from 1971, only it came out today? Or they released BB, LIB, SF, EOMS, SG or TY as then today, being a new/recent artist?

Same results probably - 2 weeks and off the chart.

It kinda seems to me that Universal likely backed off from their initial commitment for 18-months marketing / promo activities for "Hackney Diamonds". I don't recall much label support since the "Live" version got released last December - no more singles, cancelled (?) documentary project and kinda lost momentum to keep the album fresh / spoken about. Any inside info why album did not get much push this year?

Re: Hackney Diamonds - Album Talk

Lately it seems albums get a lot of hype a few weeks or couple months prior with a single or two, then a huge push when it comes out, and then... in a matter of just a few weeks it goes away.

Either the industry has finally accepted that the attention span is way shorter than it used to be because of how so much has changed or, I dunno, they fulfilled the budget and it's done.

Look at the basis of streaming - if Angry got one million streams on whatever, say Spotify, the base pay at $.004 is $400,000.

Very few artists/bands are doing that with one song, maybe an album could achieve that. Combine YouTube, YouTube Music, Amazon Music and Apple Music, somehow all being equal, at the average of $.004 per stream, that's $2 million. Some artists/bands get a bit more but it's actually the record label that gets that (basically pays the loan off).

Maybe that covers the cost of recording an album and promotion with some profit - nothing like it was 20 years ago, that's for certain - but with so much music always being released and a gazillion greatest hits albums and curated playlists by whoever, there's probably not much after the initial time frame of whatever big deal, so it's back to cruise control of the top 20 songs being played again here and there.

I've never seen anything that figures out if the changing of seasons or anniversary of whatever album creates a bump over the years, how people behave in regard to, Oh last spring ABC came out that was really good - and they listen again for a while.

Maybe they considered additional marketing as unnecessary after the album reached #1 in the charts in 19 countries worldwide - [en.Wikipedia.org] .

It's still bizarre to me that they released Angry September 6 (DL) and 8 (CD, vinyl) and then Sweet Sounds Of Heaven September 28 (DL) and October 13 (CD, vinyl) - the album came out October 20.

Why so soon for SSOH?

Mess It Up was November 17 (DL).

Nothing in 2024.

Did UMe know the Stones were on tour?

Looks like 18 months got squished into 3 months.

Despite their best efforts with a modern producer/co-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/arranger and a generous marketing budget to launch the album, sales were over by the end of the holidays as far as the US was concerned. UME would be wasting money on another single and/or video (let alone remix) in 2024 on an album that was already forgotten by consumers. The catalog (especially HOT ROCKS) benefited from the tour. In the end, while it may have been necessary to hand the reins to Andy Watt to deliver an album, the Glimmers sacrificed their production credit and lock on songwriting royalties for the same diminishing returns they've seen for the better part of two decades as far as the US market is concerned.

Time for a new hits comp - it's been over 5 years now since HONK came out!!!

Of course it wouldn't have Brown Sugar on it, the oldest track would be Tumbling Dice. But it would have Living In A Ghost Town on it! It would be so relevantly modern! The three singles from HACKNEY DIAMONDS - and they could put another HD song on to make it look like a single, have the algorithm show it only being played from HD to boost HD's streams... throw in some of the deluxe reissue singles - Plundered, Criss Cross... a new edit of Miss You that includes the streetcars verse, and of course, Undercover Of The Night, Start Me Up, Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo, Don't Stop, Doom And Gloom, Rough Justice, Mixed Emotions, Sex Drive, Emotional Rescue and Saint Of Me. Can't forget Beast Of Burden and Waiting On A Friend. Nothing from 1971, 1986, 1994 and 2016. She's So Cold and the edited IORR and the edited Hot Stuff, maybe throw people off and put Time Waits For No One and a classic, Everything Is Turning To Gold, right in the middle.

But four HD songs!!! And if they're really smart, finish one of the leftovers for a brand new song!!! It could be the single!!! Release the single the week before Thanksgiving - the album the day after - to get those mad holiday sales!

It's a no brainer.

Depends on if they rip themselves off again via artwork. Red and blue for the special edition and standard black issues if they go with the JUMP BACK/HONK color scheme.

Weird how they won't update something, like REWIND, but they'll release something new, even though nothing on it is up to date, and then steal from it 25 years or whatever later because, like with LIVE LICKS and TOTALLY STRIPPED PARIS, they use what appears to be pictures of the screens instead of original content so it looks really bad, but in HONK's case, an ugly updated JUMP BACK where the wording looks like swirls in some kind of coffee in a bougie coffee shop and almost impossible to read.

Cheap bastards.

I find it amusing to watch how fans always crawes and demands new releases, only to spin it maybe a few times and file it away.

It’s funny as well, to watch how fans always thinks new product is aimed at them and not just let it pass by. It’s a free world and nobody forces to buy anything.

I dunno. I wouldn’t make it sound like such a dire compromise. Pearl Jam also handed the reins to Watt (and the resultant records sound very similar, sonically speaking). Mick and Vedder independently reported that Watt was efficient and inspiring. That’s worth it for its own sake, no matter how poorly they’ve adapted to the streaming era.

Relatedly, of the “band” bands that stream well, look at Coldplay and their latest garbage single, “We Pray.” It sounds like warmed-over Rob Thomas (“Lonely No More”) and has a bunch of “collab” artists to goose its appeal. I checked the writing credits and was shocked-not-shocked to learn there are no fewer than *13* credited writers on the track.

Think about that.

That’s the kind of thing I call a dire compromise.

Well, their self-penned compositions have always been credited to the group as a whole; think 'Nanker Phelge' However, I have no idea why there's so many on this one. Something happened to Coldplay along the way. I'm not sure what, as I stopped listening after their second album.
