Yes I knew I’d get comments about SOL - but it’s a strong melody on an album that is not exactly bursting with them. I also wonder if it isn’t autobiographical- Mick opening up about his ‘awful bad’ behaviour towards Jerry Hall. Interesting comparison with INXS -the drums and guitar fills on Look what the Cat Dragged In reminds me more of Undercover of the Night.
Dangerous Beauty might have been better if they’d got it to swing instead of plod. There’s a lot of plodding on ABB. Thank God they are swinging now on HDsmiling smiley

The only thing i am sure about this album is that there are two songs that go directly to a future greatest hits compilation, angry and ssoh
The oother thing i am sure is that i love depending, skies, driving and straight

I have to agree with Angry and SSOH as the best songs.
Much better than anything I ever expected.

Anyone stating Depending On You is better than Streets Of Love or indeed Already Over Me is not getting what The Stones are about. Having said that it is a beautiful song but the lack of Charlie does a lot. Already over Me and SOL couldve been written by Gram Parsons and Marvin Gaye, larger than life ballads. As soon as Mess It Up and Live By The Sword kick in you know yer back in Stones Land. Quite a pity since I found Steve's drumming on Crosseyed Heart to be the best drumming (on record)regarding our boys since Voodoo Lounge.
On CH he emulates Charlie PERFECT! Dig him on TIC and MO too so it ain't an issue with Steve for me.
So proud of the fact that HD got to number 1 in my country and numerous others, it just ain't the same without Charlie.

Depending On You, Close To You, Driving Me Too Hard and Tell Me Straight, are miles above Streets Of Love.

Too Rude is miles above Streets Of Love. Till' The Next Goodbye is miles above Streets Of Love. Memory Motel. Fool To Cry. Worried About You. No Use In Crying. Laugh...

Streets Of Love is, as people love to say, a Mick solo song with The Rolling Stones... except that it's awful. Mick has had some stellar solo songs with The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil, Brown Sugar and Miss You come to mind.

Care to go on?

You do understand that if Mick hadn't've done solo albums you wouldn't be able to say such a thing, right?

I think after 100 pages we can reach some kind of unanimous decision on the quality of this album. Until then the hyperbole will rule. Seems like a Newton law on fan sites.
In the meantime Beatles is getting more airplay than the Stones. At least here in Sweden.

What? Have we reached any kind of unanimous decision on anything here no matter how many pages and years/decades we have used... Probably the only thing we agree comes by the shared presupposition that the Stones are a pretty good band somehow... grinning smiley

See the recent UNDERCOVER thread - the latest from dozens - what is the decision there? Once again, some like it, some not...

Io has never compared Stones albums, especially when they belong to such different periods.
Every album is different, I prefer some to others, but I usually listen to them based on my mood, I have to say that I'm really enjoying HD....incredible!

The 3 hits from HD where well chosen and
released in the right order.
A video for Mess it up would have
made it perfect.

Well a video for for SSoH would have been nice too, and not just the lyrics video they released.

Great promotion overall for the album and the first single - great video - but they sort of didn't seem to want to go a bit further with it.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

After such a long gap since they last released new recorded music, it was always going to be difficult to know how to pitch the marketing.

Go totally over the top and risk the embarrassment of a "damp squib" ?

Under-sell it and miss the full potential.?

I suspect the reception has been as good as they could have hoped and better than they could have feared.

Yes, they could have pushed it harder...but could have ended up looking a bit silly.
