Article about new book Parachute Women
I don't agree with the author's assessment of Anita. Past a certain point, her influence on Keith, her children and the RS was entirely toxic.

Interesting read, thanks for posting.
I don't agree with you. If men like Mick or Keith are tough and self-assured, and in the case of Keith, living a dangerous lifestyle, they are admired. If a woman behaves like that, they are called toxic or worse.
These were strong women and they didn't like to be pushed into the background. It is interesting how they influenced those boys and turned them into artists.
The same is true with John Lennon and Yoko Ono who obviously influenced him and is still resented for it by a lot of people.
I thought Keith split from her after this young man she was with in her New York house shot and killed himselfQuote

Keith's close partnership with Mick began to erode after Anita slept with Mick during the filming of Performance and at Nellcote.
Keith admitted that his work suffered badly as a result of his years of heroin addiction. He separated from Anita because he said that he could not clean up with her around because of her continued drug use.
At Nellcote, she was known to have induced the cook's teenaged daughter to try heroin.
Her reckless actions led to a great deal of calamitous legal trouble for the Stones, both in France and Canada.
She used heroin throughout her pregnancy with Angela. There are several accounts of her poor parenting, including her own admission; her daughter was taken away from her at the age of 7.
The family of the 17 year old boy who killed himself in her bed playing Russian roulette, Scott Cantrell, stated that they felt she was responsible for his death.
Toxic? You decide.

Sure, she was a junkie, and junkies are terrible parents and have terrible lives. My point was that Keith was just as much a junkie and he's celebrated for his "wasted elegance" etc...
People who do drugs make their own choices. And they never ripped off Rory Gallagher for anything, because he barely played with them. The Ry Cooder thing is not a rip off only an influenceQuote

Actually, for those in the know, Keith can also be considered a toxic presence in the lives of many of his associates. There is a long trail of corpses behind him, people who thought they could be like him, though they did not have his resources.
Gram Parsons, Spanish Tony, Bill German, Freddie Sessler, Johnny Depp, Marshall Chess, Nick Kent, Mick Taylor immediately spring to mind.
This also includes fans who idolised him and sought to emulate him, which led to disaster for them.
Plus of course all the musicians whose work he and Mick ripped off...Mick Taylor, Ry Cooder, Rory Gallagher etc.
When he
Keith is no angel, as I'm sure he'd be the first to admit.

If you were there, you were probably too stoned to be a reliable witness to anything.
Seriously, that's a silly defense to take. It's like saying no one can judge bad behavior unless they witnessed it. They were all bad people. The Stones, their women, their friends. They all broke the law and did terrible things. They're all best viewed from a safe distance. That's true of nearly everyone in the entertainment business and more than a fair number of statesmen and politicians. Much like gangsters during the Great Depression, part of the appeal is they flaunted their anti-establishment behavior and dared to be honest, to an extent, rather than hiding it beneath the hypocrisy of respectability and authority. They acted this way because they had the wealth and clout to get away with it. The younger you are, the more admirable it seems. The older you get, the more protective you grow and the more such behavior seems a threat to what you value. Not really much different than a debauched rock star accepting a knighthood when you think of it that way. Everyone grows old and, to an extent, becomes what they once railed against. In the end, the last battleground is mortality.
