Shirley Watts, Wife of Rolling Stones Drummer Charlie, Dies at 84 (Variety 19 December 2022)

Shirley Watts, who was married to Rolling Stones drummer Charlie from 1964 until his death last year, has died after a short illness, according to a statement from her family. She was 84.

The statement reads: “It is with great sadness that Seraphina, Charlotte and Barry announce the death of their much-loved mother, grandmother and mother-in law Shirley Watts. Shirley died peacefully on Friday December 16 in Devon after a short illness surrounded by her family.

“She will be also sadly missed by her sisters Jackie and Jill, and her brother Stephen. Reunited now forever with her beloved Charlie.”

Deep sadness for her family and friends. I always thought Shirley could write the book none of the other women could. There from the beginning to the end, clear eyed and intelligent. Now it will never be.

Very sad news. At the second Chicago show in '99 I had a front row seat and she ended up sitting in front of me inside the b-stage barrier. Total coincidence. Originally it was suppose to be the last show of the tour. But she got to the arena after the show started and it was funny to see the surprise reactions from Woody and Keith saying hello. HUGE amount of respect and love. And the funniest thing was to see Charlie have to bend down to look under his cymbals to see her and say hello.A very good person and a great partner for Charlie. Days like this are very sad, indeed. Thank you for your contributions to the World's Greatest Rock 'n Roll Band.

I’m sure she was the rock upon which the rock was built, as well as clearly being hugely successful in her own chosen career. A wonderful family X
