O.T- George Best...R.I.P
Posted by: Adrian-L ()

He's finally gone.
Pele, said he was the greatest footballer that ever lived..
that's good enough for me.
Sadly, he lost all my sympathy and respect as a man, when he went back to the bottle, after jumping the queue for a liver-transplant.
What a waste...

George's own wish is that he should be remembered for his football. For all his flaws, he never blamed anyone else for them

For me, he was the most appropriately named player of all time. Incomparable. I'll be at his funeral next Friday.

RIP Bestie

Yes, a fantastic player, even Pele said so.

He chose to 'waste' his life....but it was his life to 'waste' wasn't it?

It's not for us mere mortals to tell other people how they should live, I reckon....

Regards,

Ian.

Same mixed emotions as you Adrian, sad......but no sympathy....disrespect even.

And what is happening to the "News" on British TV? A living Soap opera?

The national headline on prime-time TV news last week was Roy Keane's departure from M.U.

National Significance or So Effing What?

Great player! Thanks for the memories (of course I've only seen old TV clips of him...)

If you've every experienced alcoholism at its worst you'd understand that there isn't a choice.... its an illness. Total sympathy for a great man and his family. RIP George.

I always used to prefer Jimmy Greaves myself........but I guess I have to admit George was the best........
I always liked the line about how he spent his money....what was it now
.......on birds and booze..the rest I just squandered........

may the good lord shine a light on you George

He was one of the greatest ever exponents of the game, you may refer to, as "soccer".

Even as a Liverpool fan, I have to declare that George Best was quite simply the single greatest player that I have ever seen. It is unfortunate that with such comparatively little film footage of him being available, modern generations will never really understand just how great he really was.

My most profound memory of him was playing for Man Utd in a match at Anfield in November, 1967 during which he single-handedly destroyed Liverpool in a 2-1 victory. He scored a fantastic header as well as a rasping shot into the top corner after beating three or four defenders. He tore Liverpool apart for the whole 90 minutes! Indeed, the late great Emlyn Highes (his main victim that day) described George as being in a totally different class from anyone else. He was right.

Additionally, George was a great bloke and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. A true great.

This is a very sad day.

Bob Dylan obviously has, as he added a 2nd encore (unique for this tour) of the rarely-played "Forever young" in Dublin on Saturday night.

certainly no coincidence IMO

......Cruijff?

The tragic thing about Best was that his career was practically over when he was only in his late twenties, a fate he shares with Marco van Basten. But no doubt he was one of the greatest ever. And the best player from Britain for sure.

a sad day,he was the greatest of them all.i first saw him play in 1964 and i was at wembley in 1968.

some FACTS (forget what you see on tv)

George played far more games in the ELEVEN 11 shirt than any other

only 7 players ever STARTED more games for United

only 3 players ever scored more goals for United

in three consecutive seasons 1966/67 1967/68 1968/69 (42 league games)

despite being kicked from pillar to post by real hard men he missed just two games out of 126...........
