Slow building songs.

I wish the Stones would do more of the slow songs like they used to - starting with a soft sound and just a few instruments and building up. For example,

Fool To Cry
Worried About You
Memory Motel
Wild Horses
I Got The Blues, etc.

Streets of Love doesn't build much and isn't in the league with these. The last one that really did this was Out of Tears (well, maybe Already Over me).

Yeah, I'm not trying to forget any on purpose, I'm just saying I like this style with the slow build up.

Depends on the song. When I listen to @#$%& for instance I wish it wouldn't build up so slowly. The song is of course kick-ass, but it would be even more kick-ass with a rough and fast start.

Actually when I try to introduce Stones songs to friends it is quite difficult at times to play one of the great tunes which build up slowly, because they don't have the patience to wait 1:30h for the first refrain (of course other factors also play a role). Today's music tries to be catchy within the first couple of seconds thus easy listening which people obviously like.

Also Faraway Eyes, YCAGWYW, I Go Wild, Out Of Control, Silver Train, All Down The Line just come to my mind. I love these songs, but it's hard to play them to friends.

Don't be ashamed to play a good song.

If these bastards can't wait 1'30" they ain't no clue of good music anyway, they ain't worth it. If they can only listen to bits and edits, leave them alone. They will ruin your good taste.

Yes much of today's music tries to be catchy within the first seconds - and after that follows the big vacuum. Very often there a re 5 or even 6 minutes of nothing. However, being catchy is not a undispensable part of good music.

I'd say 2000 Light Years From Home is a great example of a song with a bit of a soft start before the song goes full throttle the rest of the way. This song has an amazing build-up if you ask me. smiling smiley

Only Stones tunes?

I always thought "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Gn'R had a GREAT "build" throughout.....

starts as sort of a nice love "ballad" of sorts...."she's got a smile..." and all of that....

builds to an AMAZING guitar solo.....

and finally to the crushing "WHERE DO WE GO?!?!?" finale w/ Izzy & Slash pounding the chords and Axl crushing the vox.

what a tune...

I guess you are right. Musical tastes among younger people are mostly
awful.
When I try to make people paying attention to the Stones music my first step is turning up my car hifi system and then put in either Start Me Up from Flashpoint, Love Is Strong or Anybody Seen My Baby. In general Flashpoint is an excellent CD to pull out when playing Stones stuff to first-timers.
Until today noone could resist these 3 tunes. And when they got excited I put in Forty Licks, play HTW, IORR or live stuff other than Flashpoint.
This way I got most of my friends accepting or even liking the Stones.
You should see one of my friends (a black music & partly Beatles fan) when I put in Love Is Strong. He sings all along with this devilish Mick voice (also when he listens to ASMcool smiley and plays air harp all the time. LOL I've never seen him doing anything like that before, neither with black music nor Beatles!

All of your points are valid, but I'm speaking more of slow, softer songs than the rockers. Ex, "Worried About You".

Elmo (Middle Name: Combo) Lewis,

This one may not fit your defn, but GS builds relatively slowly, Mick doesn't hit the soundscape until about 50 secs into the tune. I love that build up.

As very often I´m with Jason here (mr 89):
2,000 LYFH is a groooooooooooover...

Mr 88 also has a good pick with Shelter.

But the build-up that goes on in Lovin Cup is of another kind...
When a break gets stronger ´cause its a - slow building song.

Yeah, BB, Loving Cup builds, as does Shine A Light. There's just so many good ones to pull from.

Shine never stops buildin. Best gospel ever written.
And a prayer coloured by the evening sun in a way
a stinkin tabloid´s never could destroy.

Elmo, that is a great point. Iagree that they don't seem to put that much of their soul into the songs any more. (I am not alking about "soul"; just their soul) even if they come up with a good idea it is more quickly prsented, deliverd and faded out. This precise, very thought out buold up hardly ever happens anymore. And there are countless songs from older albums.

No, Elmo, sooner the desert in hotter or horseier latitudes.
