are they rhyming 'week day' with 'freak day' back in 1960 pop radio!?
am i hearing them correctomundo?
that's pretty hep.
not as hep as mr. sandman, that one killed; awesome, as you kids say.
OK, that 'freak day weak day' thing surely hugely sucks, but the lyrics are great, way past groovy.
yeh these chicks were VERY into allegory.
either that or some sort of blood-sugar disorder, uh,
you be the Judge, as always fellow deep fan.
cuz here's uh, a new category of 'pop' music with a little swinging lolly in there for ya....

well that was a really big one. it was huge.
look at them throwing tranks at the kids; disgusting.
we like to think that our, (us golden oldies) are the heppest ever,
cuz we heard Time is On My Side with your grandma and all that, but...
these desperate middle-aged harlots last chance at a chicks, hoop skirts AND stockings, busy breaking ranks to be
bending over baskets throwing drugs at our kids...
sure the first gummie's free, we know that one. lou reed was
in kindegarten chomping at the bit on Long Island with Mommy
when this was going down. That's called 'context,' it's something
mick would know a thing or two about. to avoid it.
yeh they are
singing about sucking something sweet.
you be the judge, art is art but these chicks look a handful to me.
I'm digging the one on the far right there.
looks like she knows how to handle things.

I really need to go through the back pages here and collect all of hopkins' writings. They really are the highlight of IORR.

New tour coming up, new album coming out ... PLEASE no more garbage lyrics like this !!

ROUGH JUSTICE gets my vote. I mean really, does it get any worse ?

One time you were my baby chicken
Now you've grown into a fox
Once upon a time I was your little rooster
But am I just one of your cocks

It's rough justice on ya
You're going to have to trust me
It's rough justice
But you know I'll never break your heart

So put your lips to my hips, baby
And tell me what's on your mind
I know you've still got the animal attraction for me
It's been a long, long time

It's rough justice on ya
We never thought it risky
It's rough justice
But you know I'll never break your heart

You're feeling loose and lusty
So if you really want me
Yeah, it's rough justice
And you know I'll never break your heart, yeah

It's rough justice on ya
You think you really sussed me
It's rough justice
But you…

What the f**k ?

What WERE they thinking ?
Rough justice is hilarious. I think Mick did a pastiche of an Aesop fable. He cleaverly uses animals(chicken, cock , rooster and fox) as a satire to describe the male sexual/emotionnal dominance in his relationships with a female. Maybe it is just my imagination, but at least it allows me to give a meaning to that song.
Rockandroll,
Mops

well, it's an album of children's songs (most likely written for his then young daughter; the album is decated to "Gabby Goo Goo")

I'm having fun w good fan-friends, and the subject matter kinda playfully addressed in a way.
but also respect paulywaul's thread and his position, and courage for holding it;
and i'm certainly not dismissing his points. i awaited that LP with great anticipation and was relieved, rocked in a rush as rj crushed in;
and honestly love that smackin' thing, but paulywaul's critique was true for me the first time through; and afterwards too.
I'll still dial-up the Superbowl show for it's mighty roar and the excitement
of rough justice now and again....but it knocked itself down a bit i did think,
It was like a bit of a rut; it sold itself short imo.

There's honest nonsense like Awopbop-aloobop etc. No problem with that (and it's something the Stones don't do very much). There are competent but distasteful lyrics (Under My Thumb) - not to my taste, but not bad. There's Mick or Keith having fun being crude, like the pot-to-piss-in line from Pass The Wine, which is funny. But some lyrics are just incompetent, distasteful and rubbish all at the same time - the Jello line comes immediately to mind.

Yes paulywaul , those are pretty bad no doubt about it and could be the worst, but there's so many examples of bad lyrics the last few decades, I wouldn't know where to start...maybe with Back to Zero:

I worry about my great grandchildren
Living ten miles beneath the ground
I worry about their whole existence
The whole damn thing's in doubt

I don't know why, but I tend to laugh at those lines when the intention (I assume) was to instill fear and awareness.

Only thing worse than these lyrics is the music.

"No Anchovies, Please"

INFAMY

Don't you know you've got it in for me
I knew it right from the start
I'm still learning my lines baby
Since you've rewritten my part

Oh why have you got it in for me
Things they are not what they seem
You're living in a nightmare baby
But I mistook it for a dream
Yeah just for a dream
But I mistook it all for a dream, yeah

You've got it in for me
I know you've got it in for me
You didn't miss a thing
It's you that wrote the song, baby
But me who's got to sing

I knew you had it in for me
Where you take it from here?
We got along so famously
This time you made it clear, yeah

You made it very, very clear
You made it abundantly clear

You've got it in for me
I knew it right from the start
You've already convicted me
Why are you hard on my heart

Ooh you're right on my heart
Oh yes so hard
So hard on my heart (you got it in for me)
Ooh in for me, baby (you got it in for me)
Why, baby, why baby why? (you got it in for me)
All you want to do is wipe the floor with me (you got it in for me)
Come on, why, baby, why? (you got it in for me)
Hmmm
Right from the start (you got it in for me)
Yes you've got it in for me (you got it in for me)
In for me right from the start (you got it in for me)
I should have seen it coming (you got it in for me)
Fine, fine heart (you got it in for me)
Ooh yeah

An overlooked GEM of a song in my opinion, a Keith classic. I remember seeing them do this at the Giants Stadium, and I don't think they've ever done it since then - or at least they dropped it relatively quickly. Shame, because Keith's rendition of it was fabulous I thought ...

Also, if you consider the lyrics, I think they have Keith all over them. They just don't sound like Mick lyrics ... I wouldn't be surprised to discover that they were 100 percent penned by Sir Keith !?

Rock lyrics are concise and deceptively simple, but combined with the melody, instrumentation and rhythm, they create a mood or a whole picture. Think of 2000 Light Years from Home, Memory Motel or Shine a Light, for example.

There is one in particular that is much worse that Rough Justice...the lyrics to Brand New Car. They are so infantile I don't even want to post them...

Brand New Car lyrics are... childish, immature, moronic, idiotic, silly, meaningless, completely non-pretensious.

I love that. That's what I like form these guys: they're just playing. Grown up men banging those guitars like teenagers.

If I was to seek for "a message", "a meaning", "a serious topic", then I wouldn't play any Stones' record.

By the way, Brand New Car, IMO, is a really fun track, with great RnR lyrics, on a really great album, which I would rank way up on their discography.

I don't really speak English (Spanish is my language) and I can recall listening/reading those lyrics back in 1994, being a 10 years old kid and laughing about it. It was magical, as I was learning English and my schoolmates were watching cartoons on TV while I was understanding what The Rolling Stones meant by "open the hood, I wanna check if the oil smells good".

That's so stupid... That's so cool.

"I love you dirty @#$%&, sister & brother" is one of my favorite Stones lines; great opening lines to a great little song.

I thought of anew low one IMO

"Do you ever fear the night
Could it be the war is lost
Do you feel the final hour
Do you kneel before the cross
You're blinded by rainbows etc etc etc

The lyrics are not necessarily "bad" (what does that really even mean?), but they just ring so false to me. So tossed off. Exactly, exactly what fits right in with the image of Jagger after breakfast flipping out this pat imagery, and sensitive rhymes that are just enough to evoke some kind of empathy.
This is also why "Laugh I Nearly Died" has never quite convinced me. Yes it is a good song; probably one of the better on that last album. But the words...he already went there on "wandering Spirit", and it was better.
This is making me think: It's not really fair to Jagger. He has seen it all. He truly has. It must be very hard for him to get genuine about something in poetry anymore. Hard, but not impossible. He would need to go places that he doesn't seem to want to go anymore.

>>>It must be very hard for him to get genuine about something in poetry anymore. Hard, but not impossible. He would need to go places that he doesn't seem to want to go anymore.

The thing is, if Mick ever wrote lyrics that were authentic and reflected his real thoughts and experiences, he'd be lynched by hordes of enraged women and disgusted men. When he was 23, he could get away with writing Under My Thumb and Stupid Girl, but over the last 50 years he has had a string of exes who attempted suicide, one successfully. His behaviour has clearly shown him to remain a narcissist and sexual vampire in his mid-70s. He is known for having stolen the work of fellow musicians.

How many of us can relate to that? Those are not universal experiences.

I still think “she combs her hair” is a very weak lyric in a great song.
5 more minutes work would have helped.
