They're shooting down planes with their M-16 and with laughter

I think the line is "amid laughter".

I still think “she combs her hair” is a very weak lyric in a great song.
5 more minutes work would have helped.
How about 30sec

She comes in colors everywhere
Flows through her hair
She's like a rainbow

They were too hung up on starting each line with She. It looked good on paper

What about laying "traps for troubadours" or "mad bull lost his way?" Why should the classics be sacrosanct?

Seriously, it's all silliness. You either love a song or not. All the crying sharks in the ocean that holds hands with the sea will never change that. No matter how many cards are on the table.

"I love you" is a lyric you're quite unlikely to find in a Stones song.

(Yes, I know there's Had It With You, but that's hardly classic moon-in-June stuff).

‘Beast of Burden’ 1982 Leeds ‘I love you chicka chicka baby’ repeatly and dreamy
‘Fool To Cry’ 2018 London ‘I love you so much little girl’
You have to look for it smoking smiley

The only honest response I could give...

"The Worst"

Well I said from the first
I am the worst kind of guy
For you to be around
Tear me apart
Including this old heart
That is true
And never ever let you down
You shouldn't stick with me
You trust me too much, you see
Take all the pain
It's yours anyway
Yeah kid...
Oh, put the blame on me
You ought to pass, you see
Somewhere outside
I threw love aside
Now it's a tragedy
I said from the first
I am the worst kind of guy
For you to be around

great

Mick and Keith excel at writing about conflicted love; The Worst, above, is a great example, made all the more profound by Keith's singing.

You should eliminate this thread

Why does this Lem Motlow character keep coming here and “bashing” the Stones?

Well,I talked to another fan once and he said he was in Detroit for a show and he found out where the band were staying and just hung around all afternoon by the hotel hoping to see someone.
Now this was the 78 tour,no internet and not as many people bothered to track down a band back then except for a few groupies and dope dealers.
So the guy says he spotted this big white limo at a curb and the driver is behind the wheel just sitting there,a half hour goes by,then it comes up on an hour.
The fan says he thought about leaving but it was a nice day and he had a feeling.
He stands there for another 20 minutes,he sees this figure in the distance.
( this was the renaissance center,so parking on the street is a lot of concrete sidewalk and open area from the building)
A thin man wearing a suit,a fedora, sunglasses and carrying a newspaper.his heart is racing.its not only Mick Jagger but he’s walking to the car by himself and no one else is around.
The limo driver gets out to open the door and smiles at the fan because he’s obviously trying desperately to get his shit together before Mick gets to them.
fumbling with a pen and paper, shaking slightly.
“Hey Mick, hows it going?” -“great, ow are you?”(he’s exactly like you think he’d be) now the guy,who not only hasn’t crapped himself and is managing verbal communication just asks Mick to sign an autograph thinking he’ll get his 10 seconds and go away happy.
BUT-Mick stops and starts talking to the dude about the tour.”have you seen the show yet?”(the guy said he’d seen a theater show and a stadium,it’s been awhile and I can’t remember which ones he said(New York and Philly?again I’m not sure)they were in Detroit for a theater.78 was like Licks for you younger folks)
Oh,yeah it was great-
Mick said to him -“YEAH,YEAH EVERYONE ALWAYS SAYS GREAT,WHAT DID YOU REALLY THINK? The dude told him where he was sitting for the stadium show and the sound was a bit muffled and that the theater was phenomenal.
Mick stood there saying uh huh,ok good. The dude felt confident enough he pulled out his little Polaroid camera and had the limo driver take a picture of him and Mick before they drove away.
That always stuck with me-what did you REALLY think?

I see a couple threads got merged. One thing I noticed is how Mick has used cold, cold in several songs: Winter, High Wire, Don't Stop, She's So Cold. Not good or bad, just something I noticed.

I never listen to lyrics in music but this one from Saint Of Me gets me every time I hear since it's so fantastic.

"And I do believe in miracles
And I want to save my soul
And I know that I'm a sinner
I'm gonna die here in the cold
I said yes, I said yeah"

Not sure why but I REALLY love this one.

Saint Paul the persecutor
Was a cruel and sinful man
Jesus hit him with a blinding light
And then his life began
I said yeah
I said yeah

Augustin knew temptation
He loved women, wine and song
And all the special pleasures
Of doing something wrong
I said yeah
I said yeah

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
He'll never make a saint of me

And could you stand the torture
And could you stand the pain
Could you put your faith in Jesus
When you're burning in the flames

And I do believe in miracles
And I want to save my soul
And I know that I'm a sinner
I'm gonna die here in the cold
I said yes, I said yeah

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me

I thought I heard an angel cry
I thought I saw a teardrop falling from his eye

John the Baptist was a martyr
But he stirred up Herod's hate
And Salome got her wish
To have him served up on a plate
I said yeah
I said yeah

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me

I thought I heard an angel cry
I thought I saw a teardrop falling from his eye
I thought I saw an angel cry

You'll never make a saint of me

From the best double album to have emerged in 1972 from absolutely anywhere in the world, and it still sounds as good to me today as it did then. Luuuuuuuuuuuuurv EXILE !

No good, can't speak, wound up, no sleep
Skydiver inside her, sLip rope, stunt flyer
Wounded lover, got no time on hand
One last cycle, thrill freak Uncle Sam
Pause for bus'ness, hope you'll understand
Judge and jury walk out hand in hand
Dietrich movies, close up boogies
Kissing @#$%& in Cannes

Grotesque music, million dollar sad
Got no tactics, got no time on hand

Left shoe shuffle, right shoe muffle
Sinking in the sand
Fade out freedom, steaming heat on
Watch that hat in black
Finger twitching, got no time on hand

A (possibly) overlooked gem of a song ... Casino Boogie >grinning smiley<

Here's 7 pages' worth of discussion:

I discovered this album later than most. My older sister who was a fan, never owned it and had the impression it was awful so I avoided it for a long time (plus it was more expensive). Then I got it and discovered all these amazing songs. My love of this album has never ceased over the next 30 years. It continually vies with LET IT BLEED as my favorite album.

Besides the good, the bad, the ugly, there sometimes (not often in the case of the Stones) there is the category of the "incomprehensible".
For me, that one applies to "All Down The Line". I like the lyrics, I like the song, but what is it about really?

A lonely person who wants to go all the way to fulfill his needs?

Yeah, heard the diesel drumming
All down the line
Oh heard the wires a-humming
All down the line

Yeah, hear the women sighing
All down the line
Oh hear the children crying
All down the line

(All down the line) We'll be watching out for trouble, yeah
(All down the line) And we'll keep the motor running, yeah

(All down the line) You can't say yes and you can't say no
Just be right there when the whistle blows
I need a sanctified girl with a sanctified mind to help me now

Yeah, all the people singing
All down the line
Mmm, watch the men all working, working, yeah
All down the line

(All down the line) And we'll open up the throttle, yeah
(All down the line) And we'll bust another bottle, yeah

I need a shot of salvation, baby
Once in a while
Hear the whistle blowing
Hear it for a thousand miles

(All down the line) And we'll open up the throttle, yeah, yeah
(All down the line) And we'll bust, bust, bust another bottle, yeah

Well you can't say yes and you can't say no
Just be right there when the whistle blows
I need a sanctified mind to help me out right now

Won't you be my little baby for a while?
Won't you be my little baby for a while?
Won't you be my little baby for a while? - yeah
Won't you be my little baby for a while?

Ah (...)
Walking all down the highway side
That's why I need you
(...)

All down the Line ! Another absolute peach of a song (in every respect) from that album to end all albums, the mightiest of the mighty - Exile on Main Street !

The playing on that is so expressive, so aggressive, the lyrics compliment it perfectly. Another work of genius from ... the song-writing geniuses (when they put their minds to it) that are M Jagger & K Richards

Which kind of gets me back to the original point in the first post ... what were they thinking when out came that opening verse to Rough Justice ? Had Mick just awoken from some dream in which he is sh***ing yet another supermodel, looked out the bedroom window, and saw a free range chicken on his garden lawn and some mean old crafty fox stalking it ? I mean really ...... ? confused smiley grinning smiley

I cut out the lyrics to save space. I read them, but I don't see how your interpretation applies. To me it brings images to my mind of factories and trains from the beginning of the 20th century, but I don't really see what it all means.

Again: I think the song is great and the words sound perfect, and I don't really need to understand lyrics to appreciate them but in this case I sort of wonder whether I am missing something.

I'm not a fan of the song, but I'm fairly certain the aim was to evoke Willie Dixon and "Little Red Rooster." There are fans who think he achieved that and it was a naughty but clever verse. There are others that groaned and felt embarrassed.

All Down The Line

Yes, a real gem. Had it for a long time as my mobile ringtone.

And what are the lyrics all about now?

I believe that was discussed here before, and to the tenor that this song is about touring the States in the mid sixties, when taking endless train rides from one gig to the next.
