KR.
I love many other guitar players, many of them mentioned already, some of them before Chuck Berry (a favorite also) and some lesser known, but it was KR's SOUND that made we want to PLAY music so there is no list for me.

I was talking to a guy (A Beatle Nazi) the other night about Keith Richards SOUND as being a big part of what makes him great, and, he says, "Ya man, and John Lennon was a great guitar player too. End of discussion, LOL

Here's a few of the more tremendously gifted guitar slingers out there:

Keith Richard
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Jimi Hendrix
Jerry Garcia
Jimmy Page
Mick Taylor
Wes Montgomery
Carlos Santana
Eric Clapton
Johnny Winter

These guys are all "in a league by themselves" I think... but then there's just a bunch of really talented people in their own right: the guitar front lines of The Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd are awesome, John Frusciante, Billy Gibbons, I thought Frank Zappa was really gifted... Neil Young and Steven Stills are incredible, Eddie Van Halen is awesome... there's a bunch of 'em.

Guitar players are a dime a dozen, but it is only the very few that have such a distinctive sound that automatically identifies them and furthermore are able to have a successful and sustained career in music. Think about it...EVERYBODY plays guitar. The guys mentioned on this thread (aside from Lennon) have a gift and am 6th sense.

Besides the Stones, Joe Perry is very good. The Edge is probably the most unique player of the 1980's and now. Lindsey Buckingham is very underrated.

How can it be better than I 'think' it is? I hear what I hear. I don't know man, I loved John, just never thought of him as a great guitarist.

Want to add Robben Ford.

John was one of the absoloute biggest in rock/pop ever. And definitely The Man in the Beatles. But I'm not impressed of his guitar playing.

Milo, you are very right.

It is indeed a gift and has nothing to do with motoric skills.

The 'sound'doesn't come from an amp. a guitar, or whatever added gadget.
It comes from somewhere else and you defenitely have to be born with it.

The guys mentioned here are the best of the best so to speak. There's thousands of unknown guitarplayers with a great sound ( or soundcolor, timbre) who are able to make some sort of living out of it.

And then there's millions of players who sound like their guitar
is always out of tune..

It's one of god's little jokes

I've done extensive researchb and testing on this subject and came up with some
defenite but very new conclusions. You guys think there would any interest in
hardworking but no 'talented' guitarland?

its quite amazing on Bowie's "Scary Monsters" as well!

My favourite guitarists are Keith Richards and Ry Cooder. I like Prince too.

For the most part, lengthy guitar wankery bores me.

I think at one point in his career Robert took lessons from Robin Trower, I think I read that in a Trower interview years ago.

And somebody finally put Lennon on their list, (I'll bet thanks to the debate started in this thread) but, not George Harrison? The Beatle fans have spoken.

I ain't stupid, I'm just guitarded.
