What is so fasconating about Fripp, is that he approaches the guitar in a never-heard-before way. It sounds like a something that is alive, not a solo. The best thing I have heard him play is St Elmos Fire on Another Green World. It gives me such chills.

I'll throw you a few that haven't been mentioned much here:

- Jimmy Thackery (formerly of the bluesrock band The Nighthawks)
- Johnny Winter (in his prime - untouchable)
- Billy Gibbons (at least 5 ZZ Top albums should be in every Stones fan's collection)
- Derek Trucks (currently the best slide guitarist on the planet - Duane is barely missed these days in the ABcool smiley
- Warren Haynes (he's playing second fiddle to Derek now, but he's the busiest guitarist on the planet - anchoring 3 or 4 bands at a time)
- Trey Anastasio - brought jam banding back from the "dead"
- Leo Kottke - the best in the biz, still
- Charlie Christian & Django Reinhardt - still amazing to listen to after all these years
- Wes Montgomery - jazz guitar at its absolute finest
- Jerry Garcia - the man was a marvel

Yikes! How did I forget about the late, great Roy Buchanan?! Been listening to alot of him lately - a great audience recording circulates from his last concert - a few days before he committed suicide. He was an astounding player.

I've just downloaded a video of Back Of My Hand from Rockpassion and I do love Mick J's slide guitar on that track. He's a rather good guitarist I guess.
I can hardly wait to see this tune played on the European tour.

Jimmy Herring, the guy who's "replaced" Jerry Garcia in the Dead is an awesome player with so many beautiful sounds.... if you get a chance to catch The Dead, The Other Ones, or Phil Lesh & Friends, etc., Jimmy is probably gonna be playing with 'em and you'll definitely appreciate his guitar work !

Tussler,
What I know of Alvin Lee. He founded Ten Years After (named so cause they started 10 years after Elvis did); you can see him in the Woodstock-movie
goin thru rock history up till then in "I´m Goin Home". Brilliant!!!

The Dead may be "no more" - internal squabbles are again threatening the "other ones." I agree - Jimmy is a good player - loved his work with Col. Bruce Hampton & The Aquarium Rescue Unit.

these are actual real people? or did your fingers just get entangled on your keyboard?

Yes, T & A, these are actual real people.
Some explanation will do, I think.

Jan Akkerman is a guitarist from Amsterdam and in 1973 he was chosen as the best guitarist of the world by the English music magazine Melody Maker. He has played in a band called Focus, and since 1976, when he left that band, he's performing solo with various artists throughout the world.

Adrian Vandenberg played in Whitesnake, and before he joined the snakes, he had his own bands Teaser in the seventies and Vandenberg in the eighties. Perhaps you'll remeber Burning heart from 1983.

George Kooymans is the lead guitarist of Golden Earring, who have become world wide famous with the songs Radar love & Twilight zone. Radar love is one of Mick's favorites!!!!!!!

Eelco Gelling is a blues guitarist who has co-founded the blues band Cuby and the Blizzards and played with Golden Earring for three yeras as well.

Ricky Medlocke plays in Lynyrd Skynyrd, and has had his own band for years: BLackfoot from Jacksonville - Florida

Visit the web sites of the various musicians and you've got some cd to listen to.
Enjoy the music!!!!!!

Thanks Rob - I was just having fun with you - a few of those were familiar to me - just rarely mentioned in company with more of the "household" names.

Some of my favorites I haven't even bothered to mention - known to very few folks. There are probably thousands of guitarists out there who, in a fair world, would be raking in millions, but instead operate in relative obscurity. Luck plays a huge role in this. Keith and Ronnie are very lucky, too - right time and place and all.

Favorites as opposed to who I think are the best:

No particular order:

Keith
Angus and Malcolm Young - AC/DC
Edward Van Halen - VH
Jimmy Page - Zep
Joe Perry - Aerosmith
Ritchie Blackmore - Purple, Rainbow
Glen Buxton - Alice Cooper band
Ace Frehley - KISS
Glenn Tipton/KK Downing - Judas Priest
Dave Gilmour - Floyd
Rick Nielsen - Cheap Trick

You're welcome T & A. I like to have some fun in life. Go on with it........
I hope you'll find some music of the ones you don't know yet. For years I've been searching for musicians who are not part of "household names", e.g.Steve Morse was not quite wellknown in Europe, before he joined Deep Purple,in 1995, and I discovered him in july 1985 already with the album The Introduction of his own band. Looking over the edge can be usefull for your own development in listening to music.
You're very right: Keith & Ronnie are lucky men.
Not everybody will achieve the top and stay there for (in the mean time)
several decades.

Hi T & A,
I've got a box by Grateful Dead: Golden Years, but I haven't heard of Jimmy Herring: somebody to discover...
That's how I like to do it: just reading a name, and go for the searching flow....

Thanks Baboon Bro

I`ve heard Ten Years After and I remember when I saw Woodstock for the first time, around 15 years ago, I thought the guitarist played like Jimi Hendrix.
