12 Biggest American Rock Songs
Posted by: Pecman ()
Date: February 12, 2017 05:41

I live in New York and I'm curious what Stones fans outside the United States
consider the top 12 Biggest Rock songs of all time by a U.S. Artist for popularity and influence...Stones fans in the U.S...free to chime in too.
BTW - I hate Bon Jovi but I have to give credit where it's due:

Mine are in no particular order:

Hotel California - Eagles
Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen
Living On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
Sweet Child Of Mine - Guns N' Roses
Rock N Roll All Nite - Kiss
Sweet Emotion or Walk This Way or Dream On - Aerosmith
I Wanna Be Sedated - The Ramones
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry
Paradise By The Dashboard Lights
Free Fallin' - Tom Petty
I Feel Good - James Brown
Don't Stop Believing - Journey - Makes 13 but is the most downloaded song ever

This list makes you realize how amazing the U.K. Bands + U-2 from Ireland Are:
Put the above against The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Kinks, Eric Clapton, Genesis/Phil Collins, U-2...not sure half of these songs
would make the top 12 if we included those bands.

OK, a totally subjective list. My list contains songs that were in some way groundbreaking or they introduced a genre. It is just off the top of my head and many of you can easily argue against this list.
They weren't necessarily the most popular, but I'm thinking influence.

Johnny B Good - Chuck Berry
Only the Lonely - Roy Orbison
Hound Dog - Elvis
Light My Fire - The Doors
California Dreamin' - Mamas and Papas
Like a Rolling Stone - Dylan
Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
Great Balls of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
I Heard it Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye
Hotel California - Eagles
When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes - Supremes

Well, I guess one should first define what rock is. In all lists, I see songs which I wouldn't call purely rock: soul, jazz, blues, funk, folk. Then again, you might say that all that falls in the wide category of Americak popular (rock) music. In that case, I would say:

1. Nadine - Chuck Berry
2. Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry
3. Mona - Bo Diddley
4. Tutti Frutti - Little Richard
5. Catfish Blues / Rolling Stone - Muddy Waters
6. Wake Up Little Susie - Everly Brothers
7. Respect - Aretha Franklin
8. Run Through The Jungle - Creedence Clearwater Revival
9. I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye (But I love the CCR version too)
10. Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
11. White Light/White Heat - Velvet Underground
12. Waiting For My Man - Lou Reed

thumbs up To make this list even better I'd remeove the Ramones song and include a tune penned by jeffrey Lee Pierce instead ("Carry Home"? "Mother Earth"?).

More Hot Rocks,

Yes...you are correct...a list of overplayed American Rock songs.
That was my point in all of this...I was curious what American
Rock songs are popular in other Countries.

I tried to list all the songs I am so sick of hearing in the U.S.

There's a difference between-

"the top 12 Biggest Rock songs of all time by a U.S. Artist for popularity and influence"

vs.

"a list of overplayed American Rock songs...all the songs I am so sick of hearing in the U.S."

Hence the confusion.

Well NYC is just like Buffalo. Same songs on our classic rock station.

No list is complete without Happy Together by the Turtles.

Wait, The Band - too many songs, but if I had to choose one, it'd be The Weight.

(Yeah, I know they are Canadian, except Levon Helm).

Hairball,

You are right. My point was a bit confusing.

I guess what I really wanted to know if these
signature songs by these U.S. artists are as overplayed
in other countries as they are in U.S.

Does that makes sense?

And I was curious to know what people from other countries
considered U.S. Rock songs overplayed in their countries.

No Neil Young? Surely "Heart of Gold" would make the list. As would Grateful Dead's "Truckin" and Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way."

Re: 12 Biggest American Rock Songs

I would put "Dreams" more overplayed than "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac in the U.S.

A list based on influence is way different than a list based on popularity. I find the influence list much more interesting (and much "bigger" in the scheme of things).

Maybellene- Chuck Berry
Johnny B. Goode- Chuck Berry
Good Golly Miss Molly- Little Richard
Crossroad Blues- Robert Johnson
Hound Dog- Elvis
Folsom Prison Blues- Johnny Cash
Like a Rolling Stone- Bob Dylan
Mannish Boy- Muddy Waters
Hipshake- Slim Harpo
Boom Boom- John Lee Hooker
Voodoo Child- Jimi Hendrix
Who Do You Love- Bo Diddley

Sure some of it isn't "rock" per se, but there wouldn't be rock without it.
