Your favourite albums of 2016
Posted by: Silver Dagger ()
Date: December 13, 2016 00:07

Anyone else think that 2016 has been a pretty strong year for great albums?

Be great to hear what everybody else on here has been digging. Here are my faves.

1. Daisy House - Western Man. A father and daughter folk/rock duo from Long Beach, LA. Doug Hammond for me is quite possibly the best songwriter in America right now. This is the duo's third album since starting out in 2013. Criminally they have not been snapped up yet and you can only get their recordings on Bandcamp.

Here's a track of the album - Yellow Moon Road

1. Beaulieu Porch - Sarum Sounds
From a great new US talent to a excellent one man band from Hampshire, England - Beaulieu Porch. Simon Berry plays everything, and produces himself as well. His latest album is what I'd call psychedelic punk and sounds like it could have been made any time between 1966 and today. Quite brilliant 2-3 minute nuggets.

3. The Rolling Stones - Blue & Lonesome
Quite brilliant return to their roots. You've all got it so I don't need to say any more.

4. Michael Kiwanuka - Love & Hate
In places like Marvin Gaye fronting Pink Floyd. Brilliant new soul album from London singer/songwriter.

Just check this killer track out.

5. Cat's Eyes - Treasure House
Really strong tunes from this dream-noire duo. This track sounds like a long long classic from 67.

6. Steve Tyler - We're All Somebody From Somewhere
Strongest album Tyler has made for nearly 30 years. Debut solo album and the kind of album you've love the Stones to make with strong country rock influence.

This is a great one.

7. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
They keep getting better. Totally unique indie heaven

8. David Bowie - Blackstar
Emotionally overwhelming. Basically a great artist's last brilliant burst of creativity. Not the easiest of listens.

9. Black Mountain - IV
These former drone monsters have changed direction to make one of the best psych rock albums of the year.

This has Meddle-era Floyd stamped all over it.

10. Hayley Bonar - Impossible Dream
Canadian indie singer/songwriter who fronts her own band.

But I'm pretty sure that was 2015.

I guess Blue & Lonesome by the Stawns (but nothing on it tops Cook Cook Blues, baby)

Re: Your favourite albums of 2016

The Monkees gave us a very good album "Good Times".
So did Beyonce "Lemonade".
I think Nick Cave's "Skeleton Tree", and Bowie's "Blackstar" were probably the best.
Who else?
Crazy old Kanye and "Pablo..";
Anderson Paak with "Malibu"
"Bloom Forever" by Thomas Cohen
"Hope Six Demo.." by PJ Harvey
"I Like it when you sleep..." by 1975
"Paradise" by White Lung
"Post Pop Depression" by Iggy prod. by Josh Homme

I have to stop. Oh, Dandy mentions the Jayhawks album - yes.

I like your list Bowiestone. I think I always like your taste in music.
I have several on your chart; for various reasons.
I automatically get everything by Primal Scream, one of my alltime favorite bands. But I thought "Chaosmosis" was a letdown. Im not sure what it is with PS.Mani left, Throb is gone, and I see Mooney and Duffy are hardly used on last album. But the personnel is roughly the same as "More Light" and that one was fantastic.
I can't get into Rich Robinson solo.
Kendrick Lamars album I'd place a lot higher.
Dylan, I think has become a perpetual ? to me.
Metallica is having to make up for such colossal mis-steps that it will take several strong albums in a row.
Dwight Yoakam was a good album. Like it.
Paul Simon is always good.
Beyonce and Lady Gaga IMO both put out top 10 albums of the year.
Elton - love that album. Really is what he says it is.
And otherwise, I think all my top 5 are in your top ones too.

This post isn't meant to dissect your list. I just see that you did a much more comprehensive chart, and I couldnt resist.

re Tedeschi/Trucks - I love what they do. They recreated the Joe Cocker Mad Dogs & Englishmen scene. Trucks is w/o doubt one of the best guitarists on the planet. To me their weakness are her lead vocals.

Yeah, I agree on a lot of points. I think the Rich Robinson album is his weakest. But I had to have 40 albums... and others I considered were just poorer (Steven Tyler (although better than I thought it would be), Vince Gill, Little Big Town,...).
Same thing for Primal Scream. I actually lost interest after Evil Heat, but you know the feeling, you always give it a shot. And it has some ok songs.

Haha, yeah, Susan Tedeschi... I have to defend her to all my friends.

Might have to dig a little deeper into the Kendrick Lamar album. I thought it was obvious why he left those out of 'Butterfly'.

True, although I don't know that i need to 'admit' it. I don't like all that many bands, the only albums I listened to from this year would make my list, I had to check the ipod to remember:

Rolling Stones - Blue and Lonesome (#1, of course!!)

... the rest, in no particular order:

Ian Hunter - Fingers Crossed
Sponge - The Beer Sessions
Operators - Blue Wave
The Strokes - Future Past & Present
D Generation - Nothinng Is Anywhere
Steve Earle - Colvin & Earle

Oh, and seeing other lists, I'll likely add 2 more, didn't even know they had recent albums ...
Sturgill Simpson & Metallica ... off to check on torrents

Probably The Cult's HIDDEN CITY. Pretty good album.

been a "retro" year my 2016

many disappointments: pj harvey, bon iver, angel olsen, violent femmes return (not that I had much expectations on that), also radiohead and black mountain are a delusion imo

i will keep: bowie's blackstar, rihanna's anti, cohen's you want it darker and of course b&L

my 2016 award goes to nick cave's skeleton tree

Some people didn't like Bowie's THE NEXT DAY because it... I heard this from "young people", as in millennials - it didn't sound like his 'classics'.

Pathetic, as usual.

Great album.

So BLACKSTAR comes out and it's so off the hook it's beyond brilliant.

Millennials didn't even bother. Their pathetic little Twenty Hundreds pea brains couldn't even comprehend it. For being so "brave" and into new things and all this other crap they brag about they sure are pathetic when it comes to music.

Bowie's like U2 for me ... He lost me at Blue Jean. I don't think I've played a Bowie album in over 20 years. Not saying he hasn't had anything worthwhile, but like U2, I've lost interest.
