I cannot judge about their choice, because I don't know enough about literature, but
I think it is an important breakthrough for popular art that it is recognized as being
a serious way to express oneself. Congratulations to mr Zimmerman.

I try my best
To be just like I am
But everybody wants you
To be just like them
They sing while you slave
And I just get bored

From Maggies Farm

thumbs up
I always liked the line "His bedroom window is made out of bricks" from the same song.

Fantastic news! And a great signal for popular music.

Congratulations, Bob, you've deserved it. You're such a great songwriter. Here's to you, Sir. Hope this prize is giving the best kicks to you.

Agree, JumpinJimF, Bob Dylan has written loads of phantastic lyrics, with Hurricane being among his finest, with a very fine and sophisticated sense of humour.

Cheers!

There must be some way out of here, ...

I mentioned Hurricane partly because I got one of my Music Mad Offspring to listen to it recently. MMO has great taste in music (despite not being a Dylan fan) and thought Hurricane was amazing.

Is there anyone who's alive you would suggest giving the Nobel prize to?

In reality the only competition for Dylan could be someone who's eligible/alive.
Or would you suggest to skip this year's award as no one is good enough?

Well, at least it's fun! And someone known to the general public. I will watch his acceptance speech. Which is something I don't always do.
Personally, I voted for Adonis (at my local library). But I don't think they dared to give him the prize.

Grotesque.

For what reason? Please explain.

He hasn´t wrote a single line to deserve this honour in the past three decades.
He´s written good lyrics in the 60s/early 70s, but even that wouldn´t qualify him. Nobel prize in literature for a singer/songwriter? Grotesque. Who´s next? Bruce Springsteen?

Like the Academy Awards, Emmys, Golden Globes - just BS.
Remember Sean Connery winning an Oscar just for dying in "The Untouchables"? I almost did wet my pants with laughter when I heard "The winner is..."

... it´s all BS.

That is your opinion, and yet again your opinion is so wildly outside of what most music fans agree on. You often just seem so disconnected from reality.

Dylan has written some amazing stuff in the last 20 years. Time Out of Mind, the entire album is brilliant with some of his best writing. Also, don't forget his Autobiography Vol. 1, which was considered universally as brilliant. Congrats Dylan! A true American musical genius.

The man who shaped modern music and dragged it kicking and screaming away from Tin Pan Alley and into the streets. Everyone including the Stones, The Beatles, The Who and Springsteen owe him for that.

Maybe he could once write good lyrics but I watched ''A Simple Twist of Fate'' from Desert Trip and I'm surprised he wasn't booed off the stage.

I love Dylan´s recordings (well, most of them) but he doesn´t deserve the prize. He´s just a singer/songwriter. They could as well have given the prize to Paul Simon. Dylan got the prize because he´s famous. It´s nothing but the commitee shouting "He look we are still there, we are important!" In fact nobody cared for the prize for years and hardly anyone knew the winners. Now they made sure everybody knows the winner (and the commitee, that´s what it all was about) It is ridiculous that there shouldn´t be a contemporary novelist/poet/dramatist who deserves the prize more than Dylan does. At least this news gave me a very good laugh and probably a lot of others too. What a farce.

He is a writer. You may not agree with their decision, but to decry it as a farce is a farce in of itself.

Like I wrote earlier he is a plagiarist so for that reason only it should have been a "no-no-no" but obviously the "times they are a-changing" even in Oslo. winking smiley

And I don't think he's a genius. he's very talented and active in a field (pop/rock field) where "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" passes as creative writing. But Shakespeare or Proust he isn't.

To me his musical achievements (and the way he re-arranges his own songs onstage) far exceed his lyrical achievements. In that respect I find this Nobel somewhat ironic.

All poets are plagiarists, to an extent. It's called inspiration.

The Nobel Prize is a political prize. This is election year. Updike or Roth deserved it.

Wrong. But maybe in Stockholm. The prize is awarded by the Swedish Academy (founded in 1786 by King Gustav III) which is situated in Stockholm.

I am not a passionate Dylan fan, but he deserved the Nobel Prize!

Therefore I say with all my heart:

CONGRATULATIONS!

Wouldn't you have to study the works of people who didn't get it before you make that determination?

I never understand why people get excited about awards. It doesn't change your work at all, it doesn't make it better or worse then it was before, its just that a group of people voted for you. Whats to get excited about?
