OT- Any other Stones fans follow NASCAR?

Keeping up with NASCAR auto racing has been a passion of mine since I was a kid. When you are born in North Carolina and raised in Virginia, it's almost genetic.

It's one of those sports that you really have to see live to appreciate.

I was at Talladega yesterday, and here is a clip from a pretty wild race.

I grew up in Indianapolis and we looked down on NASCAR. Then Indy strayed from oval racing and it's been down hill ever since. Not that NASCAR is any better. I started watching it to see Danica kick their ass and disrupt their boring white guy club. Now she seems incapable of even a top 20 finish. I might catch the Indy 500, this year is the hundredth running, but I don't give a crap about Keslowski or any of those bland drivers.

I used to be a big CART follower but then the split with IRL took place and it ruined open wheel racing. I don't follow open wheel at all anymore, not even F1.
I started watching NASCAR several years ago, mainly to watch Kyle Busch. I never used to watch it prior but knew some of the big names of the past like Earnhardt and Waltrip, etc.
My favorite team is JGR because of Busch. Don't like Keselowski and Danica is way over rated. She wasn't even that great in IRL even though she was with a premier team.

Love the Nascar...yesterday was a load of fun. I usually hate the wrecks because of such a delay in speed and strategy but dang...that was a demolition derby yesterday!!! How could you not enjoy watching that.

Kenseth needs to chill out though...I don't like Logano but Kenseth is looking like the assmunch in this 'rivalry'...

I'm from south Georgia - sure I love NASCAR. Been attending races since 1983.

Saw many greats - Petty, Earnhardt, Rusty, Awesome Bill, Cale all the way up to the present. Was a big fan of both Davey Allison and Jeff Gordon.

I really like Chase Elliott driving the 24 car. Great pedigree and team.

Hey, Elmo!

Not surprised at all that you are a fellow NASCAR fan! Your mention of those drivers brings back memories.

My first race (Martinsville) was won by Cale Yarborough, in 1968. I went to the Martinsville spring race last month, and then Talladega last Sunday. One or two races a year is about my speed these days.

Totally agree on Chase Elliott, seems to be a really nice kid. When Junior retires, he'll be my man.

Used to not like Harvick much, but got to meet him in Martinsville, and my opinion has changed.

Do you ever make it to the Atlanta race?

I was fan for a long long long time (beginning in 1982/83/84), but I fired them at the end of last year.

They finally drove one too many nails in to the coffin and that was that.
Mainly I was just worn out of being mad at the stupid crap they constantly do.

I do not not miss it one bit this year.
On the contrary I am delighted to have my Sundays open, it is refreshing.
I roll my eyes thinking back on the number of rain delays and time I wasted sitting through them.

As far a Talladega? Frances folly? It is ridiculous.
But they are too proud to admit what a mistake it was.

Motogp is the real deal, not much of a nascar guy but for those who like racing I encourage you check out motogp nothing better.

Yes, I go to Atlanta, Daytona, and Talladega on a fairly regular basis now. Used to go more. Usually a race or two a year now.

I have a friend who races ARCA and have been able to be in the pits for his races (not working, just hanging out). Very fast paced and exciting down there too.

I wish ATL still had 2 races, but a lot has changed in NASCAR - not much for the good, IMHO.

NASCAR does some inexplicably funky stuff too, like Indy with road races that nobody wants to watch on TV. I turn it off if it's one of those NASCAR races where they literally bump each other around the track. I don't get that at all. And the tracks should be wider or they should race in two lines so they can pass each other. Visually it's a drag to watch.

The driver of this car Justin Wilson was killed a few months after he drove this Stones Indy car.

This is racing. If you don't feel the adrenaline while watching this you're not a petrolhead. Nascar? I never understood oval racing. And it looks very dangerous to me. [www.youtube.com]

Hi Mongoose,

I was lucky enough to drive at Chicagoland with the RPDE in 2005: now that was a blast alright!

My admiration for the drivers knows no bounds- even more so the guys who were driving in the 'slightly' less safety conscious era. Takes some skill, know-how and cojones, for sure!

It ain't as easy as it looks, right? Right!

Cheers,

Simon.

Looks great, SimonN!

Back in the 90s, the school where I worked at the time had a Racing to Read contest for the kids. If they read a certain number of hours, their reward was getting the #17 Darrell Waltrip car for the entire day at the school.

At the end of the day, the show car driver let me park it in the trailer. The average person has no idea of how much power those things have until you sit in the driver's seat and rev it up real good. Shakes your molars!

(Not a bad Stones song title.....Shake Your Molars.....)

eye rolling smiley
