Easily the Stones' greatest ballad....

Hard to argue with that so I won't, but I will say that No Expectations is right up there with it!

With Back Street Girl right behind...

Love Back Street Girl ... but can't rank it up there w/ Wild Horses/No Expectations, I would put that in similar rank w/ Lady Jane (another great one!)

** edit ** and see you also said 'right behind' so yes, i would agree w/ that

** further edit ** Might put Love In Vain above all of them, but that is not a Stones original ... still their all time best ballad, if you call it that

Agree LP about Love In Vain, You Got The Silver rates for me too (this one is on the edge maybe for ballad qualifying I suppose).

WH has always just grabbed me start to finish and probably their best ballad for me thumbs up

I remember very well the day I listened Wild Horses for the first time. I was not into the Stones yet, I was more into heavy rock. I went into a record shop and saw and offer of Unmasked from Kiss and Sticky Fingers, I bought both, went back to my house and played Sticky Fingers. When the needle of my turntable started playing Wild Horses, it was like a feeling like i was floating in the room, a feeling i was not used to feel with the music i was into at that moment.

A song out of this world.

Bye
Fernando

It took me four of five takes to listen to this song to realize how great it is. First time, it did not move at all, I thought it was kinda boring. Probably I did not expect such kind of thing from the Stones I thought at that time I knew - so I just abandoned it. Second time I did not get it either but it was performed live at the Knebworth concert which I loved a lot so I gave it third try. I think that was rather lyrics that clicked with me. It was like confession, so painfully honest, beautifully poetic and extremely personal. People love to discuss musical part of the Stones songs but what really moves me is the lyrics - I think the way the band talks to you through their songs, their language is really amazing. Wild Horses is a great example of this.

Love this song...the only Stones song I know on guitar...

At one of the 2018 London shows (22nd or 25th May, can't remember) a girl walked by me with a dress with horses all over it, I asked her if they were wild horses, she laughed, she was super cute and I wished I'd asked her for her phone number!

Comment from uploader

" I recorded it using my cell phone from a cassette playback that I was not supposed to record. That noise in the room happened at that point. I added the audio to this video in order to upload it, since you cannot put sound files on YouTube. There are a couple other versions of this song that I could upload, but they are really just early run throughs. Mick was still writing the lyrics and just tossing in whatever came to his mind while singing."

It's Jim Dickinson (RIP). He was a studio musician in the area who frequented Muscle Shoals.

RE Jimbo Jim :

"On the third day [Dec.4], when they recorded "Wild Horses," which began with a minor chord and Ian Stewart [Stones pianist and road manager] wouldn't play minor chords, [laughs] y'know...[Jim got roped in to play piano] I didn't find out why, for years, and Stew finally told me one day, at a hotel in New York, about his thing of not playing minor chords, and I thought "thank god" man [laughs]. But for that, I would have no 'claim to fame."

Very interesting.
I love most the version with steel guitar

Someone said it's their greatest ballad.

It is. They're great at ballads, usually, and have plenty of other great ballads, but Wild Horses - damn near anyone knows that song. Out Of Tears or Fool To Cry, not so much, and certainly not Already Over Me or Laugh...

One of my favorite Stones songs of all time. 50 years after I first heard it, Mick Taylor's lead guitar gives me goose bumps every time. One of Jagger's best vocal performances on a ballad.

Why is there no mention of Mick Taylor playing electric guitar? It's him playing the lead.

Taylor plays the Nashville strung guitar.

This is actually a great song for a steel guitar and I wish they would have fleshed it out more.

Correct. He hits some harmonics which complement the melody quite well. Richards plays the electric which sounds very much in a pentatonic box.

You can read about the song at this link. You'll notice Mick Jagger contradicts Keith a little bit and Mick Taylor contradicts everyone. They didn't know what they were doing, it's amazing anything got done at all.

It seems Richards came up with some of it and gave it to Jagger and he ran with it.

There's no seeming about it, that's what happened.

Okay, then why did you write what you wrote? I didn't read any contradictions and it was pretty clear. Richards wrote the hook and Jagger wrote the rest.

I think Wild Horses is one of Keith’s best guitar performances.I removed all the other instruments, drums, bass acoustic guitars, and kept just his guitar and Jagger’s vocals with my separation track app., and you really hear his great guitar

I'm agreeing with you and removing the doubt, "seems". It's others that say otherwise. It's distinctly/factually clear that Keith came up with it.
