its a classic, one of the greatest ballads ever recorded.

it would have been a legendary and well known song if it had been written by somebody like john lennon, but cos its the stones it remains like so many other stones songs as not well known to the mass public and also it remains so underated.

the stones produced some excellent ballads.

no expectations and lady jane being another 2 classics.

but i think wild horses is the best of the bunch.

Still says Decca?

Wasn't Brown Sugar/Wild Horses published as a single on the Decca Label?
At least it is on The London Years, so Abkco has publishing rights, no?

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Love the live version from Sticky Fingers live of 2015.
Fantastic live album. I hope they will release it soon!

They have. Or do you mean on vinyl?

Hi Silver,
Yes, I'm talking about a vinyl and dvd release. They were brilliant during the show.

I do find this whole 'mythical'Muscle Shoals studio totally overblown. It was a nice studio, but the Stones could have been recorded in a toilet and they would have blown us away, They simply where the red hot, coming off the tour, and they would continue to be red hot unti late 1972. They recorded in half a dozen studio's in this period, and they sound fantastic everywhere.

And to add -on Brown Sugar you hear drums, bass and one rhythm guitar by Keith from the MS sessions. All else -including vocals, brass, piano, acoustic guitar and half a dozen guitars by Keith, are from Olympics.

Wild Horses- Stone cold Stones classic. Beautifully played with amazing subtlety and finesse. Lyrically moving, sung beautifully. One of their very VERY best.

I agree, my favourite ballad when it came out. The 'harmonic guitar' version is just beautiful.

Keith's harmony vocal just takes your breath away on this one.

A beautiful Stones ballad, that is a very unique amalgamation of country and British blues rock. Beautiful, fragile, and haunting. Such a delicate acoustic intro, and Keith channels his friend Gram, with sublime and heart-wrenching backing vocals. Lovely.

Normally I'm very averse to using cliched sayings as a chorus, but in this case "wild horses couldn't drag me away" converted into song really works.

To me, it's the best rock ballad ever. Followed by - no particular row- songs like Comfortably Numb (P.Floyd), So Sad (Marianne Faithful), Tuesday's Gone (L. Skynyrd), Turn the Page (Bob Seger) and about 10 other Stones ballads...

But Wild Horses is just unbelievable song. The music, the melody, the lyrics, the feeling..

A very nice country, folk and bluesy song from a complete album "Sticky Fingers", for sure the Muscle Shoals added some flavour to this song and great to see it was played at the Classic Rock Werchter 2014.

I have so far been too much in awe to say anything at all relating to "Wild Horses". Still I am unable to express that much, but I need to show my respect towards it.

To be consistent in my views, though, I have to state the necessary point: There really is not one Rolling Stones song alone that is their greatest, and also among their five best songs there are several more than five. But "Wild Horses" is always among those more than five best songs.

At least, "Wild Horses" is among some fewer songs that are their most emotional. In fact, maybe it is the most sentimental song I know about, but without falling apart, all the same, as would so much have been a danger with such a character. Quite a feat, only that.

I just crossed to this and decided to share it here. It has been discussed in this thread already, but let's hear it from the horse's mouth. Gram Parsons' take on the origin of "Wild Horses" starts from 13:29 (short: Mick played the Muscle Shoals version (together with "Brown Sugar") to Gram after Altamont, then later send it to him to do some overdubs, which they never used, but The Flying Burrito Brothers were permitted by Mick to release their own version - and Gram finds it strange that it took a year for the Stones to release their own):

Took me away when I was 16.
And ever since.
59 years on earth.
50 with the Stones.
And 43 with the Horses.

What a great song!It is perfect. When they recorded it again in Japan in the mid 90's, they showed us that they could still play accoustic numbers with an hyper sensitive touch.Rough dudes peeling off their harden skins to make us feel their emotional understandings.
Rockandroll,
