OT: Favourite Tom Waits album

Disclaimer: I have had too much to drink and am in a sentimental mood smoking smiley

For me, right now it is Bawlers, I think it is such an amazingly beautiful album. Every song is a diamond.

Bawlers I can agree with. Swordfish Trombone, Rain Dogs are also up there. I would probably go with Rain Dogs in a pinch, however, you have to hear it on vinyl, as the CD transfer, as with many of his CDs is very subpar. Bone Machine is another incredible album!

Rain Dogs
Bawlers (The entire collection- escieally on the 10 vinyl lp box set!)
Swordfish Trombone
Bone Machine
Heart Attack and Vine

Those are my top five.

I'm fond of all the albums he made with his wife (Swordfishtrombones to present).

There's a Tom Waits album for every occasion.
Blue Valentines would have been a favorite, if it hadn't started with Somewhere (from
West Side Story).
Both the Brawlers and the Bawlers from Orphans are amongst my dearest disks, and
Bad as Me is one of the best albums from recent years.

And this Joe Rogan fellow, that JohnnyBGoode posted, is funny, but he's got a poor taste...,

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

I like the differences in his way.

Crooner: CLOSING TIME

Whack: BONE MACHINE, although MULE VARIATIONS is outstanding as well.

The Black Rider is his most extreme album. A weird mash up of Russian / German dark ages sounding instrumentation, and Waits at his rawest vocally. it is a genuinely scary record, only more palpably felt by the presence of William Burroughs. my two year old has just come into the room as this is playing , and promptly left saying " Daddy, I don't like this song". Time to shut it off and play with the kids methinks....

I really like Bad As Me. The video for it is awesome! I posted that clip, whether I agree or disagree, Joey Diaz always makes me laugh.

Yes, so true about Bad As Me, a fantastic album. And that could easily be in my top five. It is a stunning work, so varried, and deep. With all his styles, crooner, balladeer, avant garde rocker, pub scowler, brawler, and bastard. A fantastic release. I should have mentioned it in my list, possibly Heart Attack and Vine (which I can, but it is hard with one of Americana's true classics, Jersy Girl! Sha la la la...)

In no particular order they are: Bad As Me, Rain Dogs and Heart Attack and Vine. This thread has given me plenty of listening ideas though!
