Does I Wanna Be Your Man count as a cover? Stones released it first and by all accounts they really wrote it as well as it was only half a song when they got given it. But in any case it's far superior to the Beatles version.

????

Never heard that version of the story.
Other than Brian adding wicked slide, it was pretty much recorded as it was written by the Beatles as far as I know.
And not sure it would count as a cover - as you say the Stones released it first.
But if it does count as a cover, I'd agree the Stones version just might surpass the Beatles version...maybe.

It seems to be a general conclusion upon musician friends colleagues etc that if it's not an original by the artist it's a cover regardless of what version was released first. If the Stones recorded something someone else wrote first then it's simply known as "the original version". If the artist that wrote it records and releases it it's not a cover of the original... since they wrote it.

Playing slide guitar on a song does not constitute that "they really wrote it" since the song was fully written when it was given to them. How the Stones played it was simply how the Stones played it. That's no different than saying the Stones wrote Not Fade Away in 1994 because it's slower...

So the Stones covered The Beatles for their second single, released 11-1-63 and The Beatles' version came out on 11-22-63... with Ringo singing.

"It was a throwaway. The only two versions of the song were Ringo and the Rolling Stones. That shows how much importance we put on it: We weren't going to give them anything great, right?"
-John Lennon

"Every track from Rock n Roll 1975"? Wow, to name a few John destroyed Chuck Berry's You Can't Catch Me and Sweet Little Sixteen with totally messed up arrangements and overally produced brass. I even have the "Roots" album (the way it was supposed to sound" and it still sucks mostly.

The Stones version of Around and Around is excellent, and much better than Chuck's (IMO their best cover).

That depends. Studio version is about the same as chuck's, but the Love You Live version blows it away! Best version anyone has ever done!!

Johnny Cash - Hurt. Actually pretty much any song that Johnny Cash covered, but Hurt is exceptional even by his own standards.

I would add

Janis Joplin's cover of Kris Kristofferson's

“Me and Bobby McGee”.

I don't know why people on music forums have so much trouble with how music works and what threads should be titled. This should be titled cover songs that you like better then the original. Music is subjective. That way there is no argument. I personally am tempted to argue with anyone who claims that Like a Rolling Stone was better by the Stones then it was Dylan. I think thats a silly opinion, but if thats someone's taste I guess, but if you say it outperforms it then we have an argument. The same with All Along the Watchtower..I will take Dylan's version any day over the Hendrix version. Sometimes less is more.

I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - 1966

Penned by Norman Whitfield and Barret Strongthe the song was given
to Smokey to cut as a demo/guide track for other artists to follow....

Glady's Knight recorded and released her take of it in
1967 with Marvin Gaye later recording his version in 1968...

The Smokey version is well worth checking out ...........

That's what everybody thinks but is not true.
Marvin Gaye recorded his version before Gladys did, but released it later.
Apparently the song was even written with Marvin in mind.

"Like A Rolling Stone (Boby Dylan) topped by the Rolling Stones or not?"

Absolutely. Stones version sounds two times better in my ears.

I always preferred April Wine's cover of the Beatles' "Tell Me Why".

And the Stone's version of "I Wanna Be Your Man" to the Beatles version.

I like covers that take the song in a whole new direction. This version of Madonna's "Like A Virgin" by Amos Lee is a good case in point.

I love Johnny Rivers' version of Memphis, Tennessee ..has a great chugging groove.
Is that sacrilege?
I wouldn't say it's 'better', but I freaking love Diana Ross's Ain't No Mountain High Enough..
Foghat's I Just Want To Make Love To You
Aretha's Respect
Aretha's Say a Little Prayer
Aretha's Until You Come Back To Me (early Stevie Wonder song)
Grand Funk Loca-Motion
Joe Cocker With a Little Help

Many intressting suggestions on good covers is mentioned here for sure, but where is Elvis Presly and Frank Sinatra? You don't Think Sinatra's 'Something' or 'Yesterday' outperforms George or Paul? Elvis 'Polk Salad Annie' or 'I can help' Tony's or Billy's? Not an easy nut to crack.
