Naw, that's not Olly's style. I'm sure he could come up with another clue just as cryptic as the original puzzle though.

I found this story [en.m.wikipedia.org] about the statue turning to gold on judgement day.
Still don't know where it leads us, but another thing I learned from this game.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

I shouted out "who killed the Kennedys" when after all it was you and me

As a regular cryptic crossword person, I usually can make in roads into fairly hard clues, and regularly complete the Times and Observer crosswords...but this! I've studied it on and off for a while now and have come to the conclusion that Olly is either a fiendishly good cryptic setter or something is not quite right in the clue.

It can be hard working cryptic solutions without knowing the style of the setter...which you normally build up over weeks, months and years, so it could be that.

Like others I've approached this by looking for the obvious cryptic indicators like 'processed' meaning anagram, i/e in this case maybe changing the letters of trash...if Olly was Uk based he would likely not use trash etc etc...but, I'm still no closer.

Olly could you let us know if this is a totally cryptic clue or partially...or give us a little more.

Edited to add...I was convinced at first it was Emotional Rescue...alas not anymore

Well... it's cryptic in a layman's sense, but not as purely cryptic as professional puzzles, no doubt.

Not every single word should be 'translated' in the exact order, but I think that would be difficult with a sentence or group of words compared to one or two word answers.

It may not follow specific rules found in other puzzles, I'm not sure. It's just a fun way of representing the lyrics and giving a little challenge to those who like this sort of thing.

Consider the multiple meanings of words / phrases, anagrams, synonyms etc. - just the basic stuff associated with this sort of puzzle.

If nobody's on track, I can post a clue and then give two dates between which the track the lyric is derived from was first released, to limit the search.

I don't think there are any massive errors in the clue, but it may not be quite as cryptic or precise (or simply as good a clue) as you're expecting.

.....

Olly.

Are they bronze?

I'm sure they're quite well tanned in the appropriate seasons. Besides which,
you could melt down a bronze horse to make bullets to kill someone (in this case Kennedys),
and that could then be regarded as a "result" of the horse. And Lucifer shouting out "who killed the Kennedys"
was certainly rubbish, when after all it was you and me. Doowop ergo sum.

Further clue to 7: The 'charger' is a horse made in bronze.

From a song first released: 1964-1969, inclusive.

I think I have now read the lyrics of most of that list, and I'm still no nearer an answer. There must be an elephant in the room that we're all missing. Probably a bronze one...

How about "Tippling a jar in Jackson"?

The 1853 statue of Major General Andrew Jackson in Lafayette Park is the oldest full-scale
equestrian sculpture in the United States.
And could tippling a jar have something to do with delivering garbage as well as having
a drink?

O, and the ours and yours could refer to US and UK. Do you think the result of the battle
of New Orleans was undesired or aureate.

(I'm Dutch, I don't care)

Sounds good to me, Marcovandereijk!
And I now realize I forgot to explain how the results in my proposal are aureate -
but I reckon you've all figured that out on your own. :E

Might we be looking for something to do with shoes? The "aureate and unwanted results of a charger" sound like golden horseshoes - and the "cast" in the new clue might be "cast-off". Though why they should be bronze, heaven only knows, and all the shoes I can remember in lyrics are post-1969...
