Take HOT ROCKS and throw in (except for repeats, of course) MADE IN THE SHADE, TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE, SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES and REWIND and that says, perhaps, enough. If a lot is enough, that is. Although they have had some great songs post UNDERCOVER/REWIND, critically they don't matter.

But I would throw in a couple from STEEL WHEELS, VOODOO, BRIDGES and BANG for sure.

One of the problems I have with the GRRR! compilations is the underrepresentation of tracks featuring Richards lead vocals.

'Happy' is the sole selection on the 40 and 50 track GRRR! compilations. The 80 track version also features 'You Got The Silver'.

What a shame.

Any career-spanning compilation should include more songs sung by Richards as they have played an increasingly important part in the band's sound since the late 1960s, and the numbers sung by Richards, especially on releases in the 1980s and 1990s, offer great quality and diversity.

A 50+ track compilation should make room for 'Happy', 'Before They Make Me Run' and at least one of the following:

    [*] 'Little T & A'
    [*] 'The Worst'
    [*] 'Thief in the Night'

.....

'Memory Motel' would give Richards' vocals some added exposure I suppose.

I don't care much for any of the 4 'new' songs on Forty Licks, but 'Keys to Your Love' does feature a nice solo.

Of the 4 new songs on FORTY LICKS Don't Stop is decent and I've always liked Keith's number. But really, Don't Stop would've been enough.

Keys To Your Love I deleted and refuse to listen to it's so bad. And the other one. Just horrendous. How they thought those were good enough... they could've put at least 2 other songs on the damn thing, like Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) and maybe One Hit (To The Body) or She Was Hot or Hot Stuff or All Down The Line or Bitch.

You people make it far too easy for Mick. You all probably happily purchased GRRR and now you are daydreaming: "Man, if there was another one just like it."

actually --- this has been the basis for rolling stones' releases for the past 40 years.

at some point, they will have released more greatest hits albums than they have released albums.

there are at least 14 greatest hits compilation albums:

- big hits
- through the past darkly
- milestones (uk, decca)
- hot rocks
- more hot rocks
- made in the shade
- rolled gold (uk, decca)
- time waits for no one (uk)
- sucking in the 70s
- rewind
- singles collection
- jump back
- 40 licks
- GRR

Excellent point Turner..perhaps a best of the "best of" would be appropriate at this point.

But in this day and age where everyone can make their own playlists it seems almost pointless to me to be releasing these compilation records without something new on the table.

My most played Stones playlist is my countrified one which includes all my favorite country flavored Stones tunes from Beggar's Banquet through Some Girls with a few extra gems thrown in like 100 Years Ago, Let It Loose, etc.

Disc 2 or sides 3 & 4 of HOT ROCKS sans YCAGWYW and Midnight Rambler
MADE IN THE SHADE sans Angie, Brown Sugar and Wild Horses
TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE sans Angie, If You Can't Rock Me/Get Off My Cloud, Bitch
SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES sans Mannish Boy, Whip and the three BLACK AND BLUE tracks
REWIND sans Angie, Beast Of Burden

That's perfection right there.

Well, if ya need me to chime in, sure, why not? spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Instead of 80-90% singles/hits, the Rolling Stones ultimate compilation I'd like to see would be geared towards a long-playing experience, not a collection of stand-alone hits. For the 1963-'67 period, sure, include the singles and 3-4 lesser known cuts but then have lots of non-singles from the album era 1968 onward. It should be thick with stuff like Jigsaw Puzzle, Monkey Man, CYHMK, Rocks Off, Let It Loose, Winter, etc and maybe have just 10-12 singles/hits from JJF to the current day. No need for WH, Angie, Miss You, Fool to Cry, SMU, YGMR and it would be even more impressive of a collection for it; knowing that this 50 song suite didn't even include some of their best known songs.

Outside of live and rarity compilations, it's really the only remaining catalogue-pusher and legacy-expanding type of compilation they could use. Otherwise, as Turner68 noted, they're going to have more greatest hits type releases than studio ones soon!

I categorically disagree, owing mainly to the underrepresentation of tracks featuring Richards lead vocals, which I highlighted earlier in this discussion.

You forgot at least One Hit To The Body, Highwire, Doom And Gloom and Love Is Strong and of course Flip The Switch and Undercover Of The Night. And Feel On Baby... and... and... and...

I am going to work on a personal compilation that completely avoids warhorses and hits, this will be interesting indeed - deep cuts only.
