I think it's a lovely tune, beautifully sung, but I would imagine the Hounds of Hell are shortly to be unleashed on Mick hereabouts.

Lightyears better than Suspicious and Lover’s Plea, right? winking smiley

Don't know about that, Dandie. In general, I prefer the singing voices of Miranda Lambert, Mick Jagger, and Don Henley to Keith Richards' voice. I wouldn't presume to judge whether Tift Merritt's song is better than Keith's songs. I just know that I like it better.

The day I prefer Henley's voice to Keith's I'll definitely find a new favourite band smiling smiley

Imagine Henley's You Got The Silver, Happy, Before They Make me Run, Little T+A, Memory Motel, Coming Down Again...

Ouch, no I will stop this now...

PS: And this is coming from one who actually likes some of the stuff from The Eagles smiling smiley

It's easy, Dandie. Just focus on the 95% of the band's discography that doesn't feature Keith on lead vox -- there's still enough there to make them your favorite band! (And, for the record, I love Keith as a backup vocalist--very charming and adds a lot of nice touches to classic Stones songs.)

You can't separate his vocals. Whether it's Connection, Casino Boogie, Brown Sugar or Blues In The Morning, Keith's singing is such a big part of the Stones's music and soul to me.

one of the highest compliments paid to bob dylan is from his detractors - the worst you can find any of them saying about him is that they don't like his voice.

for the last, let's call it nearly 10 years on here (yes i've been a lurker for nearly that long) people have been saying "keith can't play guitar any more" "Keith should quit" "keith can't write songs any more he should just stop writing songs" "keith can't play guitar and sing at the same time" "keith should be replaced" "keith doesnt' have any new tricks musically" etc etc etc.

the fact that the keith detractors are reduced to "i don't like his voice" (and obviously i'm not talking about longbeach as he is new here, i'm talking generally) is to be just about the highest compliment his detractors can pay to him given the history of keith bashing over that time period.

keith is one of those guys who, especially before the late 80s, was constantly underestimated, and i think that's part of the charm seen by those of us who like him.

so, go ahead and talk about how you don't like his voice. doesn't bother me one bit. lots of people don't like the stones because of mick's singing, nothing i can do about that either.

Sure, I can! I love his back up vox on tons of songs, among those are the ones you mentioned, and I don't like it when he sings lead SINCE HIS VOUCE IS THE FOCUS OF THE TRACK in those cases.

There are two exceptions, for me: I do love his vocal on "Coming Down Again" (nearly as much as I adore Mick's backup vox on that song), and I really like his lead vocal segments on "Memory Motel."

Finally, although I can't be bothered to go see The Stones live any more, I know I would be disappointed if I did go by Keith not singing MORE ... backup vocals. They used to be a highlight of the shows for me.

Did you listen to I Got The Blues from Sticky Fingers Live, btw?

I reckon You Got The Silver and Something Happened To Me Yesterday also are among your exceptions, judging by the "smooth Keith vocals" you seem to like the most?

Have not heard any of Sticky Fingers Live since I am afraid it would make me cry for a week. Is it any good?

Not esp a fan of either of the other tunes you mention but am getting a good grin out of "smooth Keith vocals"! I read his voice described as a "croon" elsewhere on the site today, too--nice!

Well, I've got a crosseyed heart, love both Keith and Mick.

Tried to get to Mick's bit on this new Henely tune, could not get there. That's how much I disliked this track. Couldn't make it to Mick.

Carly Simon 'You're So Vain' was a real nice add-on of MJ...
my .02 cents.

Hopefully, this hasn't already been posted. Y'all gonna love this. The NYTimes reviewed Henley's album - an interesting review to say the least, referencing old rockers who try the country genre as a way of revitalizing their career - and the reviewer had this to say about MJ's contribution to Henley's album.

"Perhaps that's why he placed the Tift Merritt cover 'Bramble Rose' first on this album - his guests are Miranda Lambert, who doesn't try too hard, and Mick Jagger, who sounds otherworldly and aggrieved, as if someone were reaching down his throat and manipulating his vocal cords while his eyes bulge wildly and he gasps for air and reason. By contrast, Mr. Henley sounds like an old pro."

I don't think Mick sounds horrible here, but the whole song doesn't ever go anywhere. There's a difference between slow and plodding....

The new song “Bramble Rose” is stunning for several reasons. Not the least of which is the rustic simplicity of the music. Also, Mick Jagger sings the third verse in as moving, unaffected a way as we’ve heard from him in ages. Can you talk about the genesis of the song?

“Bramble Rose” was written by a fine singer-songwriter named Tift Merritt. It was the title of her 2002 debut album. I’d wanted to record that song ever since I heard it. But I had to figure out a way to set it apart from the original. So, I decided to make it into a sort of musical theater piece—a trio of characters whose roles are somewhat ambiguous. Maybe it’s a love triangle, or maybe I’m the one-man Greek chorus observing the tribulations of the other two. Doesn’t really matter. I also knew that Miranda Lambert had to be the female lead, and it so happened that she knew and loved the song, too. Then, I decided that Mick would be the perfect choice for the last verse—the “mystery character.” Some people thought it was an off-the-wall choice, but if you think about it, there’s a lot of country influence in much of the material the Stones recorded between 1968 and mid-1972. At that point, they were immersing themselves in the music of the American South—particularly blues and country. Mick loved the song, too, and I was thrilled when he agreed to sing on it. The unexpected bonus was the soulful harmonica part that he added—totally his idea. People tend to forget what a great harp player he is.

Someone mentioned Jagger with Peter Wolf on Nothing But The Wheel, which is really good. Another great Jagger / Wolf song is Pretty Lady from Peter Wolf's Light's Out album. A great old album, Jagger duets (uncredited). Also always liked Jagger uncredited on Peter Frampton's Tried To Love. Kind of a throwaway track from I'm In You album, but a good minor track nevertheless. And I love Jagger on Peter Tosh's version of Gotta Walk And Don't Look Back.

Jagger sings on the first song on Don Henlys Cass County. The song is called Bramble Rose and is actually quite good.
Jagger also plays harmonica on the song.

Not Mick's best vocals at all. The harmonica part sounds good, tough.
