You know what no one ever talks about on Sway...

Nicky Hopkins' god damn excellent piano playing. That piano intermingling with the guitar solo towards the end is so great and frequently overshadowed by Mick Taylor, aka The Devil as he is known to some of you.

I talked about Sway sometime last year and how Keith doesn't play on it and i was told i was talking nonsense but yet in Micks latest Uncut interview he confirms Keith didn't play on it.

Hmmm - some kind of misunderstanding. It hasn't been a surprise since the 1970s that Keith didn't play on the studio version;
back-up vocals were his only contribution. If someone here quarrelled with you about that I'm surprised.

I also think Charlie's drums are awesome on Sway

I can talk about this tune till the cows come home.

It's one of those songs with a deceptively slow rhythm and groove that are so awesome on a record but are tricky to pull off live.

What makes this song for me is Jagger's vocals and lyrics. Yeah Taylor's guitar fills and outro lead are great but Mick really makes the song with his highly emotional and deeply compelling vocals (and lyrics).

I have always imagined that that the lyrics were penned by MT but knowing better I think it may be Jagger writing from Taylors perspective. Possibly Taylor hanging around Jaggers house talking about his desire to escape the clutches of Keith's hard drug influences, etc.

peace

Do you all like the Carla Olson live version of Sway with Mick Taylor? That solo takes you to another world while driving late at night with the windows down!

Jagger plays a very mean sounding guitar.

he did it on Stop Breaking Down too..

I'm with you Naturalust... although for me, you can add Jagger's rhythm playing to the mix, with those four powerchords on the intro that also occurs three other times in the song.

As for the origin of the lyrics, I thought of it more of Jagger reflecting on his career as a rock-n-roller, maybe sorrow over Brian's death ("all my friends up on the burial ground"(?)), "that demon life has got me..." regarding his life of being unfaithful to Marianne and shooting cocaine, a brief moment where he questioned the way he was living his life and reflecting on his own heartache ("One day I woke up to find/Right in the bed next to mine/Someone who broke me up with a corner of her smile" ).

So that's what I think.

"Shooting cocaine"? Did I miss that revelation?

<<its amazing how many people don't wanna walk or talk about it..>>

It's one of those things where you merely nod your head and understand.

<<I can talk about this tune till the cows come home.>>

But what if the cows are already home?

Well... I was just talking about in general, since it's not in the song. He does reference it on "Moonlight Mile" ( "a head full of snow" ) and on C********* Blues he's seen shooting cocaine up his nose.

yeah it does. I think she sings it as good as Jagger.

it rivals the original.

I know that's highly arguable.

HearMeKnockin...I believe snorting is the accepted term.

Nicky Hopkins outro piano playing could deserve its own thread...Jig Saw Puzzle, anyone?

Nice andrew, that isolated piano track is cool. What a build and great playing. Can't underestimate what a huge effect it had on everybody else's playing. Even with the slight mistake at 04:00.

Great piano players can make 3 chords sound pretty amazing when accompanying like that.

Getting back to Sway, Carla Olsen's version with Taylor is good mostly due to Taylors superb guitar. But to my ears she doesn't do justice to the lines Mick is especially emotive on, mainly "destroyed your notion of circular time" and "can't stand the feeling gettin' so knocked (brought) down". Also on the choruses she sounds like a country diva on "demon life" ...

This is the one I'm talking about since there are several out there.

peace

Mick Taylor didn't have nearly as much to do with this song as some seem to think (e.g. Naturlist: "I have always imagined that that the lyrics were penned by MT but knowing better I think it may be Jagger writing from Taylors perspective. Possibly Taylor hanging around Jaggers house talking about his desire to escape the clutches of Keith's hard drug influences" )

Here's what Mick Taylor has to say: "I added my solo to Sway, but it's very much Mick's song."

And since the second verse is about Brian Jones' death, it's highly unlikely that this is Mick writing about Mick Taylor or from Mick Taylor's perspective.

I think one of the most underrated losses the stones took to their sound was the reduced use of NIcky Hopkins. He was so great when he was around and so was the band as a whole so he kind of went unnoticed.
It's kind of like a good drummer. You take it for granted when they are with you but you appreciate them a whole lot more when you have someone who isn't as good.

When I think of Sway now I think to MJ cutting Taylor off on the outro last year.

It strikes me as a very Mick Jagger way of looking at things: while others have their various (sometimes lethal) addictions, their "demons", he won't be going that way because he's addicted to being alive; to life itself:

It's just that demon, Life, that's got me in its sway...

Regarding the line 'One day I woke up to find..right in the bed next to mine..', I always felt it was about Bianca or possibly Marsha; someone who was Mick's way out from the downward slide Brian and Keith and other associates involved with hard drugs had taken.
