40 Licks Royalty dispute
Posted by: jlowe ()

I seemed to remember, around late 2004 the Stones failed in an attempt to get Decca to provide a full audit of40 Licks sales.
The Judge in the case said they would have to go to arbitration.
Questions:
1. Does anyone know the outcome, or was the matter quietly dropped.
2. Why sue Decca? Surely ABKCO by then (although Decca does get mentioned on the label credits).

The album is out of print since late 2004-2005 and it should be re-certified 6x Platinum in the States (still at 4x Platinum from early 2003) since it sold over 3m copies, maybe that's the reason for the lack of updates for this album.

It was ten bucks cheaper than Hot Rocks with more songs and a wider array of time periods. Perhaps someone in the ABKCO didn't want the continued competition. Be that as it may, GRRR! pretty much replaced 40 Licks.

But HOT ROCKS is a much deeper pot in the 1960s cannon than FORTY LICKS, of which disc 1 was all ABKCO Music and an edited version of HOT ROCKS essentially. Of course, FIFTY LICKS aka THE SIMIAN FAILURE aka GRRR is much more accurate (although poorly sequenced at times) in what got them going.

I sold my 40 Licks when GRRR! came out. I liked the 2 CD track selection more, chronological order and of course the two new songs.

It's funny that the chronological order for GRRR wasn't exactly... right.

You should've kept FORTY LICKS.

You lost "Keys to Your Love," "Stealing My Heart," and "Losing My Touch" when you sold it. Pity SINGLES 1971-2006 didn't include the FOUR NEW LICKS promo CD as well as the various European CD singles.

My copy of Licks features a SFTD remix on disc one. Never understood that.

+1 as FL was certainly much less brickwalled than GRRR...

There were a couple of countries that received slightly different artwork (i.e. shinny logo, etc.) and different track listings. I read that there's a version of 'Forty Licks' with thirty-eight tracks!

Yes, now that you mention it, mine has a blue tongue on it. Like the cover, but that zippy zappy mix on a 60s disc is a real headscratcher. She's A Rainbow not on it.

Although I can not say for a fact I believe that was a second pressing. Why they would put that on the album makes no sense to me but whatever.

I didn't notice the 40 tongue until a few months after I bought it!

Whoa... I've owned 40 Licks since it's release date, and not one time did I ever realize there was a 40 on the tongue.

/mind blown

I also only noticed when it was pointed out here sometime. Surely a clever way of british understatement.

Saying 40 Licks is less brickwalled than GRRR! is far from high praise.

I'm also aware GRRR! is not totally correct chronologically but I prefer it than 40 Licks switching decades between tracks.

I also like that GRRR! also has something called a number before each track on the back liner so I do not have to use my finger to count out what track I want to listen to.

I simply did not want both and I'm happy with my choice. You all can own what you want.

I'm not harping on YOUR choice of getting GRRR, just that for some reason UMe couldn't get the chronological order correct for the distorted comp.

A bit OT here but since we are on the hidden visuals subject here. Look at this picture with both eyes, then each eye individually. It is an uncanny test of how good your vision is:

Normal vision people see Einstein, while near sighted ones see Marilyn.
If you only see Einstein, step back a ways and you will probably see Marilyn.

Understood. The booklet could have been better for GRRR! too so both sets have their flaws.

The asskissing liner notes in the Licks booklet (by a RSmag writer, big surprise) can't possibly be topped by whatever stands in GRRRs booklet. "Distinguished customer, you just purchased a handy souvenir, the Rosetta Stone of Rock'n'Roll" or words to that effect >grinning smiley<

That FORTY LICKS booklet was a bit... they should'a left the Loogness alone.

Well now that we've got the clever tongue out of the way,
I do remember Stones Inc. getting (or attempting to get) a court-ordered audit
due to something fiddly with the 40 Licks payments, but I thought it was ABKCO who was the target.
Klein was already their business manager in the latter Decca years so ... so I don't know.
All this stuff confuses me - on purpose, I contend.

It was a later, special pressing, a collector's piece now perhaps Nikkei, that was to coincide with the original release of the SFTD remix CD in I think 2003.

Hold on to that puppy!

Yes I do plan to hold on to it, as I rarely purchase CDs anymore. It isn't in best condition though.
The only other compilations I have are perhaps also a rare thing: Hot Rocks 1 and Hot Rocks 2 as separate CD releases (picked up on the flea market, label London Records)

Is disc 2 a German print? I have a separate disc 2 version as well.
