Hand Of Fate in '75? It debuted live in 1976. One Hit to the body, heaviest, due to Mr Page??

Great songs, yes. Heavy ?? No. Maybe the intro of CYHMK if the definition is expanded. The rest of the song could be background music played in public ... like a dentist's office waiting room. Fine guitar and saxophone. It is great but not really heavy.

Tumbling Dice album version .... not heavy. Once again, great but not heavy.

Some parts of "Their Satanic Majesties Request" sound like heavy metal to me.

For example, the reverb parts of "Citadel" and "2000 Light Years from Home." Did any metal bands cover these songs?

Can't You Hear Me Knocking is heavy! The entire song. The last part of the song is some of their best musicianship bar none. And not elevator music! But a heavy close with some amazing guitar, sax, percussion. Amazing.

Tie You Up (the Pain of Love)- a good heavy slab of music that is hard rock.

She Said Yeah- great proto punk and hard rock.

Parachute Woman

Sympathy for the Devil off Ya Yas

Street Fighting Man from Brussels.

Midnight Rambler from anything!

Gimme Shelter

Sure, "Elevator music" is definitely NOT a compliment. Don't like this song that much, but it would be unfair to call it muzak. eye popping smiley

i wanna be your man
and have you seen your mother, baby.

i wanna be your man was heavier than anything the who or the yardbirds did until 65-66. the guitar solo by brian may be the best stones guitar solo on a studio track.

Definitely Midnight Rambler; it shows they're still a funky, heavy, bad band.

One Hit To The Body..I had a friend who only listened to Heavy Metal who actually loved this song, and he hated everything else the Stones ever did.

yep me too this is the one

I don't really know the definition of "heavy metal" but usually if I hear something called "heavy metal" I don't like it. And I love most of the Stones' songs, so I guess maybe I'm just not understanding the definition of "heavy metal."

I'm not a musician, just a listener. So this might be a boring post to the rest of you. But I love this topic....

But if "heavy" can refer to a combination of"emotional heaviness" and a distinct, what-I'd-call-heavy musical sound, I'd say

1) Ventilator Blues
2) Just Wanna See His Face.
3)I also agree that the last half of "Thru and Thru" seems "heavy" emotionally & musically.

Plus, the WAY Mick distinctly enunciates, performs, VB, really leaves an unmistakable "heavy" feeling in me! "Your'e woman's cussin', you can hear her scream, feels like murder in the first degree"........" Whatcha gonna do about it, whatcha gonna do?" That song does help me to "ventilate!

And JWSHF- well, you possibly find it stunning & moving, or... just the opposite.

Thanks for letting me "vent". smiling smiley

Sway!

I was waiting for someone to say this!

First time we all heard Sway my friends and I thought it was pretty awesome, and pretty heavy. Course, that was long time ago.

Not a song, but I'm listening to the Tokyo 90' show and there's a little solo played between 2000 light years and STFD that sounds metalish. Ha ha. I'm assuming its Ronnie.

That's Keith. He was on fire that night.

Interesting, I didn't think it sounded like his style Its cool though. Keith is good on that show. I've been harsh on it before but I have to say I really enjoyed listening to it this last time.

The "guitar" solo between those numbers is indeed Clifford on synth.

Well that's disappointing if true. Still a nice modern era version of STFD. At least Keith is playing on that.

Not a metal band, but alt/punk band Red Kross covered Citadel

As did punk band The Damned:

Alt-Rock band The Flies did a pretty good cover of 2000 Light Years

And Metal/Stoner band Monster Magnet did a very faithful cover as well.
