Has anyone seen photos of Stones in Stargroves circa 1970??
Posted by: VideoJames ()

Of all the great photos I've seen here I do not recall any photos of the Stones recording in Stargroves 1970. If anyone has any please post may want to talk with you. Also any shot inside the Rolling Stones Mobile. Thanks

Don't know if those are from 1970:

- both apparently Stargroves, March 1970 (don't know who took 'em, sorry!)

These are both frequently misidentified, but apparently they're from March 1970 at Stargroves.

Hi "with sssoul";

Thanks for posting, How do you know that this is Stargrovers then say Olympic Studios? Were these from a magazine article or your private collection? Do you have a copy without the water mark? Again thanks for the quick responce. VJ

They're not my own photos, Video James - they circulate on the internet, but I only have this fragment in better quality.
Someone around here can probably help you, or you could ask the Pictorial Press (although they have them misdated as 1968).
There was probably a magazine article that accompanied the photos - I don't know - but you can see it's Stargroves:
in the background there's wood paneling and other touches that look like what we've seen of that joint
in documentaries (and in Dr Who eye popping smiley). That's more apparent in this fragment:

- still apparently Stargroves, March 1970 (still don't know who took it, sorry!)

While posing rather than recording, this photo is part of a collage below included in an article on Stargroves (the band, who named themselves after the English manor). But the interiors don't look the same, and they may well have just stuck that photo in there (which is also from 1970) merely to reference the full band. And Mick Taylor's hair is different.

I think it's Ronnie Lane. The trailer is his own mobile studio. LMS = Lane Mobile Studio.

That shot was taken at the Saville Theater on December 14th 1969.

A concert that I attended, and still have the ticket stub!

Those pics are (among others) on a book called "The Rolling Stones Olympic Recording Session, June 1968" from UFO Music:

I wonder if that's the source of the misidentification of these shots, or one of the victims of it.
Those shots are definitely not 1968 - if nothing else, look at the guitars -
and as noted above the room they're in looks just like Stargroves and not much like Olympic Studios.

This room seems to be the room they were recording in and the far wall seems to match up with the wall over keith's guitar. Notice the 3 wooden panels (wainscoting) next to the fireplace although the rest of the room only has 2 panel (wainscoting).

Is that the amp keith is sitting on (see with sssoul's picture above)?

Same room facing the other way

Very probably but the interest of this book is that it contains more photos from those sessions. (if I remember correctly)

For the life of me, I never understood why these rock stars back then lived in these places. I know they had illusions of rock royalty etc..
but these homes look creepy. How'd you like to have to the bathroom in the middle of the night in those dark, austere hallways. Seriously, it looks like something from an Edgar Allan Poe story.

I rather think the main bedrooms had en suite facilities. But the heating bills must have been scary.

I thought I read once that Brian Jones's heating bill to heat the pool at Cotchford was something like 2000 pounds per month, at a time when average yearly salary was something like 1200 pounds.

What I find kinda uncomfortable about these old aristocratic mansion homes, no matter how fabulous they look is, especially in the winter months, how cold they will be. Even with these big fires and central heating (if modernized) I can't see how these large rooms, frequently with high ceilings and non-double glazed windows can be anything other than freezing. You often see people in the pics are wearing shoes, sweaters and jackets, probably it is the only way they can stay warm. Brrrrrrrrrrrr.

Cheers,
SonicD

When did Mick buy and sell Stargroves? I heard at one time a retired F1 driver owned it after Mick, followed later by Rod Stewart. A couple of the photos in the thread above show Jagger seated on a couch at Stargroves. Looks like a fairly recent photo. Was he just visiting his old house?
