Thanks Keno...

Recorded in mid 1985, never released. Mick Jagger duets with guest Bobby Womack on the final cut.

Strictly Memphis
(Jagger/Richards)

Owwwooooo, yeah
Well...
Like to put my foot down, head out of New York town
Hit the open road, open road
I guess it clears my mind, I love the change in time
It put my nose in joint, well well well
I'm just so signifyin', I know that it ain't no crime
I'm no country boy, country boy
The blues is in my heart, that's where my story starts
It makes me jump with joy, whoo whoo

Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
And down in New Orleans
(Down in New Orleans)
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis, (goin')
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis, (goin')
I'm gonna be there
Whooo
Step on it!
Yeah .... yeah

Back down on in the south
Sweet tastin' in my mouth
And honeysuckle vine, suckle vine
Into the big bayou
In with the Zydeco
My lovin' come alive, come alive
Too big to come upstairs, and Muddy Waters stayed,
Water-stayed
From an old man's mouth
Whoowooo

Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
And down in New Orleans, (down in New Orleans)
Owwo
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
I'm gonna be there
Step on it!
You got it!
Bit on it!
She got it!
Whooo...

Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
I'm gonna be there
Step on it!
You got it!, (you got it)
Yeah...
Owwoooo
(Yes)

(I'm goin' to the Delta)
(Goin' on the shelter)
(Two little sissy boys)
(Say it again)

Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
Yes, I'm goin' to Memphis, (yeah)
And down in New Orleans, (Ohwoowoo)
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
And down in New Orleans, (Aww)
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
Yes I'm like a tempest
And down in New Orleans, whoo
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
And down in New Orleans
(Say it again, say it again)
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis, (hey)
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis, (yeah)
And down in New Orleans
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
And down in New Orleans, (I gotta be there)
(I gotta be there)
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
Yes I'm goin' to Memphis
And down in New Orleans
You come alive...lii-iive

Nice addition, nice lyrics, thanks for this.

This is an above average Jagger/Richard song that surprisingly didn't make it onto Dirty Work. Very likely a finished version is sitting in the vaults.
It sounds as though it could be a forgotten old standard - is it realy a J/R original? Far too good to remain unreleased.

Lyric correction:

I'm just so citified / I know it ain't no crime / I'm no country boy

later:

In with the zydeco / my nerves they come alive

The Muddy Waters verse is incorrect, but I can't catch it now.

And it's "two little city boys" not "two little sissy boys"

Also, it is a Jagger/Richards/Wood composition. The track was considered as an alternate to "Harlem Shuffle."

The Stones trying to cop that R&B feel and groove with somewhat limited success. Love the guitar breakdown at 4:27. Ronnies guitar? has enough reverb to make the whole track sound a bit washed out, quite a surf tone. Think it would have sounded better and tighter with a bit less...

How come Rene isn't authoring this thread? I recall in my early IORR ignorance starting a Track Talk thread and getting beat up pretty badly because the Track Talk thing was his sole domain. Maybe because this one got missed in the alphabetical order?

peace

I am guessing because this is not an official track, so it wouldn't be covered in the 'official' Track Talk.

As far as the track goes, I always enjoyed this one. The chorus is great!

I prefer "Strictly Memphis" over the final cut, known as "Step On It." However either version would have made Dirty Work a whole 'lot better.

A quick search by google reveals that some sources have the Stones recording listed as a Robinson/White song - in other words by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. A search through their catalogue couldn't find any reference to it but I may have missed it. Anyone with info?

Belongs on Tatoo Two. Has a nice Slave feel to my ears. Also, listening with headphones it seems the lyrics above are off quite a bit.

Interesting, don't remember reading that before, was that info shared in BB by Bill German ?

SM has to be one of the rare unrleased songs acknowledged by one of the Stones in public, albeit mentioned by the interviewer first : [www.deangoodman.com]

I QUITE LIKED “STRICTLY MEMPHIS.” REMEMBER THAT ONE? Yeah. What usually happens is I have a bunch of work cassettes from way back. I put my hand in and I pull ‘em out and I put ‘em on, and there’s a song that I’d almost forgotten. And then I start to work on it again. It’s like a great wine cellar!! You can just keep delving in there, and there’s always something. Whatever the record ends up being, it’s the tip of an iceberg. If there’s 1 5 tracks on a record, there’s probably hundreds of other ideas and bits, some of them finished and some of them half-constructed, on the way, and you try and stay in touch with them.

Also I seem to remember outtakes specialist ChrisM writing (on the UC List ?) that he'd heard a prototype "Strictly Memphis" in the long 4x90' Rotterdam 75 tapes but I never could spot it myself...

Jagger made a tape with Primitive Cool outtakes for the band members of his 1987/1988 solo band to rehearse. It included a finished version of Strictly Memphis, which is just truly outstanding.

Yeah, that's a good one indeed. It was posted here some years ago. Haven't heard it since.

Because of the Stax/ Redding influence/ homage, I'm guessing.

Awwww!!!! So it's got nothing to do with it being used multiple times through-out the lyrics ....

Me too!
But I am confused.
How can Strictly Memphis be a Primitive Cool outtake? It's from Dirty Work, two years earlier.
Is this a STONES-version or a version of STRICTLY MEMPHIS recorded for Primitive Cool with other muscicians?

From what I understand Mick re-recorded it with Jeff Beck and planned to take the song on the road for his solo tour.

The tape he did for the session musicians was outtakes from PC -rough demo songs with only drum machines etc- and the Stones version of SM. This version sounds very much like a final version, fit for release.

Does it exist a version of SM with Jeff Beck on guitar? I could have sworn I heard a version a little lighter and more pop-ish than the Stones's version... A good one, though.

Putting this on in place of BTZ would have raised the status of DW somewhat. Don't know why it never happened.

Re: Track Talk: Strictly Memphis

Possibly because of the similar sound to "Harlem Shuffle." If there was anything it might have replaced it would have been the cover version. DIRTY WORK was the first set of sessions where many of the outtakes appeared to be possible alternates for individual tracks. "Sleep Tonight" or "You're Too Much" or "Your Love." "Too Rude" or "She Never Listens to Me." "Harlem Shuffle" or "Strictly Memphis."
