Yeah Charlie and Keith were great! Unfortunately it wasn't Micks best performance of that tune and Ronnie is as unimpressive as ever.

But thanks for posting that, it was a unique camera angle and mix for sure. peace

Very cool clip..wonder how the uploader got this footage?

"Shine A Light" is not my favorite period of the Stones. It's for me the low point of their later years. Still think Jagger and Scorcese were about 10 years late on this project.

Great find! Thanks for posting. It gives more meaning to Watts' "You're my singer, I'm not your drummer."

I always though Watts' drumming means as much to the Rolling Stones' sound as anything. Watts is a jazz drummer in a rock and roll band. It's one of the secrets of the Stones' sound.

>>> Jumpin' Jack Flash from Bacon Theatre 2006.

You must be thinking of the Canadian Bacon Theater.

This is Charlie hamming it up at the Beacon Theater in NYC.

Yes of course I meant Beacon, not Bacon!

Does Charlie use an earpiece to hear the band? I don't see any obvious monitor directed at him.

I was lucky enough to be there...

Any drummers here think Charlie's snare is pitched higher than in the old days?

I think Don Was tuned up his heads for him when he wasn't looking. Surely Charlie never touched them. I always found his quote "why tune them up, I'm just going to beat on them" quite hilarious. peace

It's easy to give off this kind of impression when you've had people caring for your instruments for decades.

Specific drum tunings date right back to Jimmy Miller era. It's no accident that the drums sound so good during the time in which Jimmy was focused as a producer.

thumbs up Never can give the guy enough credit, imo. His touch was golden, especially on the song grooves and as you point out, the drum sounds. peace

Charlie is great and so consistent. Dispite the age thing which is a factor for us all, eventually....rock n roll in 2006 just wasn't like in the 70's.

This is JJF with Charlie on fire !!

I don't think his snare specifically sounds better. It does, however, sound higher. Seems like a modern thing that drummers like to tune their snares to a higher pitch.

Justin: "Very cool clip..wonder how the uploader got this footage"?

This was officialy released as an extra bonus on the Shine A Light collectors edition. Jumping Jack Flash with multi-angle viewing options. Just like Monkey Man from MSG 2002 on the Four Flicks Box.

What on earth happened with the guitars here? They're going in circles and switching channels. I get dizzy listening to this confused smiley

I love when he start riding on the crash. That is a real Charlie thing.
One can really hear how Charlie follows Keith and Mick. Charlie always is playing the SONG, not just a beat keeper.

Actually, I HATE that aspect of his drumming, and he only started doing it frequently over the past 12 years starting on the Live Licks tour.

I much preferred it when he used his ride cymbal properly...he has a nice light touch with the ride and it sounds so smooth. I don't understand why he has to clang up his sound by beating on his crash like that.

he learned military or traditional grip (how he plays) early, watching other jazz drummers play.

its interesting, Charlie's evolution as a drummer..I'm sure he played with lots of piano trios before throwing in with the Stones.

you know as a young guy in England he must have been thrilled to be part of the rising trend, the beat groups..who couldn't care less about jazz..
but there was Charlie, and that's all he knew. he had to learn to play blues listening to it with Brian and Keith..how to play with electric guitars, as opposed to skiffle or piano trios.

he has such a natural feel for jazz and blues. makes it even more appealing that such a player wound up in a rowdy rock and roll band, but then again not much is typical about him or the rest of the Stones.

He just knew early on how to play with Keith..somehow..
like Mitch Mitchell knew how to play with Jimi.

I started hearing extra "pop" from Charlie's snare on the Steel Wheels tour. And I love it.

Well, in a way it's a very jazzy sound. Jazz drums tend to be tuned higher than rock, with a smaller bass drum as well.

I love Charlie Watts, but I think the whole jazz thing gets a bit over-imagined when analyzing his playing. Charlie admits he is not much of a jazz player, and he isn't, really. He just loves it. Charlie is a very lazy rock and roll player, which has sort of become his signature sound for the last 30 years-- lopsided fills (heavy on one hand and light on the other), playing only 3/4 of the notes on the hi-hat, and really kind of blasting through some of his older signature fills on stage without much mind. Tumbling Dice, for example-- listen to the lazy intro to almost every live version. And, Charlie makes big mistakes on stage a LOT for a pro in a band with pretty basic drum parts. Now again, I love Charlie Watts and I would want no other drummer for the Stones, but...... when it comes to his technique, it has indeed devolved over the years, I'm afraid. I think most of that happened in the 80's.
