I hadn't seen or given any thought to clowns since my last trip to the circus as a child. I don't think I ever found them funny. Then as an adult I saw them at Cirque du Soleil. The clowns dressed as 18th century French footmen in powdered wigs were great and added a lot to the show.
Then they had typical hobo clowns. Suddenly I saw them for what they were and are - homeless people. It seemed really tasteless to laugh at them, and it made me think of what clowns must have been through the centuries - homeless people with mental retardation, mental illness, deformities or substance abuse problems trying to eke out a living in the only way they could, by allowing people to laugh at them. I could barely watch them, and ever since, have found them unbearable.
oh my god.

Come on, give the clowns a break. Which is the next group we are going after? Trapeze artists? Or the circus itself?

My favourite clown is Bill O'Reilly on Fox News. Whenever I want a good laugh I surf for his "interviews" on Youtube. He never disappoints me...
AHHH Good one! yeah Bill O the Clown!

You disagree? I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

i don't think we should generalize about these clowns. each is a unique individual, like a snowflake.

In the scheme of things in descending order:
1. Clowns
2. Mimes
3. "Human Statues", those wrteched people in silver body paint who infect tourist locales all over the western world, and whose one and only skill is standing still for a very long time. "Oh, I thought you were a statue, but you're a person!". That is amusing exactly one time. There is video on YouTube of a kid walking up to one of these "street performers" and giving him a quick kick in the shin. Let's see you stand still and quiet now, moron. These people need to find honest work.
