OT: clowns -- hilarious? terrifying? embarrassing? grotesque? or what?

My cousin remarked "I really distrust clowns." I replied something like "Well, yeah...they're
fundamentally untrustworthy." For me, clowns evoke pity and fear. But some people really luvvum.
I'm not sure I mean clowns doing their thing at a circus...altho' maybe...maybe it includes all
sorts of swarms of clowns stuffed into a tiny car or cheerfully cleaning up after the elephant.

But I mean more...the solo clown. The clown at a party or event. We rarely see the sad-sack clown
nowadays. Almost never see the clown-as-bum-with-cigar meme. But that's what I mean. The solo
dudes with the red nose and focked-up ill-fitting shoes, the confounding eye makeup, and
whiteface.

I don't mean Pierrot. Or mimes, but if they're part of your clown mythology, do tell.

Maybe you like clowns. Maybe you wore clown pyjamas growing up or had clown wallpaper. Or maybe
you are a clown, or attended Clown College prior to getting your JD.

I'm massively embarrassed by clowns. From the first time I saw one perform at a kid's birthday
party when we were all 4...the clown clearly was the mom's "friend" and he smoked and smelled
unpleasant. He pretended to disappear--a feat he'd talked up a great deal and which I was really
looking forward to!--but I watched him tip-toe (not even walk with dignity) from the room and
then go get in his car and drive away.

Anyway---what's your take on clowns?

Coulrophobia = a mental state; a neurotic fear of clowns...

No; I don't have that.

A little traumatized by my cousin's having dredged up my nascent coulrophobia (thanks roughjustice,
for the cool word), but otherwise fine winking smiley

I was just wondering whether anyone actually does enjoy clowns, and figured iorr has a wide cross-section
of the populace from around the world...maybe America has the worst clowns. The really crass 20th C ones.

My wife can't stand them and is freaked out by any clown like dolls. They've never bothered me. But if you want to talk about phobias then spiders is the one for me. Horrible things. And there's lots of them around at the moment not only in my garden but trying to get into my house at night. Eeek.

I don't like spiders either, but they hold no candle to clowns for me eye popping smiley

Clowns tends to favour politics these days. When they claim for power you should be afraid of them. Look at the Mayor of Toronto for instance...

Clowns are people too, swiss! grinning smiley

They don't much bother me one way or the other, I mostly find them kinda boring. True confession though...I did actually hire one many years ago for my oldest girl's birthday party. But, it was someone I knew and the kids did enjoy the show. After that, it was Chuck E Cheese all the way, baby.

Not to put a damper on this thread, but whenever I think of clowns now I think of a mother I knew at the school where my kids attended. This woman had a clown business on the side, she'd dress up and travel around doing her clown thing. Anyway, she got lung cancer, didn't even smoke, and died before her girls were even in high school. Life is strange and random sometimes and I guess that's where clowns come in.

Is that those little black chunky ones? Loads of them around now, as you say, scurrying arond the yard and garden and trying to get in......don't worry though, a friend of mine says they are only coming in to get away from the big spiders so they can breed in peace..............grinning smiley

My favourite clown is Bill O'Reilly on Fox News. Whenever I want a good laugh I surf for his "interviews" on Youtube. He never disappoints me...

I've seen a grown man cry in fear to this movie. A pretty big dude too. Cried like a baby.

I have a Krusty the Clown Halloween costume, that I'll sometimes wear for passing out candy. It's a really nice one too, big rubber head, big shoes, the whole deal. Every year that I've wore it, some kids and adults get freaked out.

I always thought clowns were cool and funny.

I think the overplayed "Clowns are creepy" is a result of John Wayne Gacy and "Killer Clowns From Outer Space".
