I read just last week that he was set to record a new album with some big guests, like Eric Clapton and Billy Gibbons.
Peace to him and his family.

Saw him many times, the first at the Fillmore East (Allman Brothers and Elvin Bishop opened). He was amazing. The new album:

Johnny Winter releases perhaps his greatest album on September 2, 2014! Step Back features an amazing list of musical guests and takes Johnny back to a more aggressive style of blues… one that helped shape the musical icon. Produced by Paul Nelson.

Step Back Track Listing

1. Unchain My Heart – Johnny Winter
2. Can’t Hold Out (Talk To Me Baby) – Johnny Winter with Ben Harper
3. Don’t Want No Woman – Johnny Winter with Eric Clapton
4. Killing Floor – Johnny Winter with Paul Nelson
5. Who Do You Love – Johnny Winter
6. Okie Dokie Stomp – Johnny Winter with Brian Setzer
7. Where Can You Be – Johnny Winter with Billy Gibbons

Sad, sad news, one of the guitar heros of my youth ... no one played such a fluid guitar ... and had such a blues feeling.

Sad sad day. A part of my youth died with him. He was a hero of the blues. And a genius of the slide. I was lucky to see him many many times over the years, he loved playing in Michigan, and some of the the most stunning blues shows I saw were Johnny's. The King of the Slide will be missed.

As Koschi said, he played in Austria on saturday - my friend was there... I saw him twice in Serbia, in 2008 & 2009, few meters in front of me; great gigs, wish it was 30 years earlier though... he did "It's all over now" both times. RIP

Johnny Winter was in my Top 10!

He was in the same league as The Rolling Stones.

I was lucky enough to see him 4 times that I can remember: twice in Newburgh, NY in 1978 and 1979, at a small club along Route 9W, once in New York City in Central Park on July 27, 1980, and once in the early 1980's on a Hudson River Pier in Manhattan.

I have his multi-colored thumb pick from one of the Newburgh, NY shows, that he threw into the audience.

He will be greatly missed.

This news has not made my day.

If the only thing that Johnny ever did was to produce those last precious records for Muddy Waters in the twilight of his life he would be rightly lauded just for that.

Mannish Boy is joyous.

RIP Johnny and thanks.
Sad Now.

Shocked, one of the greatest guitarists ever and naturally especially blues guitarist.

I never heard Johnny B. Goode before until I heard his version and that whole album with Silver Train has got to be a classic.

On that live album of his, that first one, whatever it is titled, it's so unique that it is indeed 3 sides of vinyl and then the last side is of course, nothing. I'm still not sure I've ever seen that occur anywhere else.
